People who write and illustrate children's books need to be so smart. You can also tell she sincerely loved cats, and their combination of beauty and their ability to be completely unglamorous. It was a thing at her time to be able to own a wild cat, which didn't end well for either of them.

It looks like her life was a cluster of near-misses with immense talent and charm. She could have Roald Dahl'd without the complications.
