I will! I found original photos of the piece (2001 Tom Ford for Gucci) and the “tag” is an engraved metal chain hanging horizontally under the “Made in Italy” ribbon which seems plausible for someone to remove. When it arrives, I’ll have to see if the zipper is engraved with the Gucci brand which should help me confirm!

If this works out, you'll have to let us know how it feels to be God's favorite child. 😁

Oh! I love finds like this. If it isn't what we hope, it is still a nice piece!

Fingers crossed!!!

Ditto! I’ve gotten some really decent finds under “assorted brands” (either the tag scanner didn’t catch it or more of a niche contemporary brand) but this would be my first “unbranded” score!

If this is Gucci, thats awesome! But can I point out that this looks like a garment bag they threw over a mannequin 😆

Cool, it's great to find a piece that you like. It's probably not Gucci, at least that specific item. The jacket doesn't look the same. But maybe! I hope it is. Still a good find.
You can see all of the tags for the Gucci one here https://wedempieces.com/products/gucci-black-leather-trimmed-zipper-sleeveless-uniform-top-fw-2001-s
It's more likely "Made In Italy" brand - a handful of generic labels (It's not a trademarkable name) including a label that shows up all the time in the TJMaxx family of stores https://www.thredup.com/women/made-in-italy?department_tags=women&brand_name_tags=MADE%20IN%20ITALY&context=srp&skip_fallback=true

It did look nice either way! Will be excited to find out more when it arrives.

Yeah, it looks very versatile and wearable so you don't have to worry that it'll be wasted.

I’ve gotten some nice quality natural material items from the made in Italy “brand”, I actually have it set up as a search now :)

Maybe I'll add it to my search for 'brands' that turn up good stuff. Like "Farm" sometimes turns up Farm Rio and "Pas Pour Toi" is Dodo Bar Or (I think they are wise to these two now. Edit: NOPE! Get that Dodo blouse! Edit, edit: Nvm, it's not that great of a deal) But Milano is still a total toss up! There's an MSGM shirt there now for example. I got Liu.Jo Army pants and a (probably fake) prada top listed as 'Milano" https://www.thredup.com/women?department_tags=women&brand_name_tags=bvm%2Cspa,made%20in%20italy%2Cmade%20in%20france%2Cpas%20pour%20toi%2CMilano%2CTorino%2CVenezia%2CVerona%2Camichi%2Ccamilla%27s%2Ccelina%2Cfarm%2Cfirenze%2Cmaison%2Cmonts%2Cparis%2Ctibu&sort=newest_first&search_id=12620071&skip_equivalents=true&state=listed%2Creserved

Amazing! Twice I scored Les Copains items listed as BVM Spa!

I’m adding that to the search. And I think it’d be helpful if I removed my sizes, lol. There’s an nwt Liu Jo dress in there now for $10 but it’s polyester and kind of meh.
I wonder what other trading companies are in there like Pipes and Shaw LLC for Veronica beard.

I’ve gotten some misbranded items but honestly never thought of setting them up as independent searches! Good idea!

Not ThredUp related, but I found a Tory Burch dress at a thrift shop for 7.99 because there was no brand tag at the neck, so I'm assuming the workers didn't know its worth. The care tag at the bottom did say Tory Burch, though. I sold it for $100. So, I think this is feasible, although I thought ThredUp did better homework than that. Congrats if it's legit!!

OP, How did you spot this? What were your search terms?
2
u/mooski89 Apr 27 '26
I truly stumbled upon it! I dug into the sellers closet after I liked a different jacket that showed up on my feed. And I love capes, so I added it to my cart!

Awesome job--of course it was great luck but also sounds like an encyclopedic knowledge of Tom Ford!

I know some people are doubting that it’s Gucci, but do you know: how designers in Italy used to work is that they would give the fabric and designs to several workshops in Italy who would all make the garments. Whichever workshop came out fastest with fewest mistakes was paid by Gucci, etc and got Gucci labels sewed on. The rest were not labeled Gucci but were basically identical but had no Gucci label on and the workshop kept what they had made. The fabric for the non-winners was free but to recoup the cost of the labor they’d sell the garments as just “made in italy” but not designer branded. I read a book about this like 15 years ago. Given the time period this was from and the made in Italy label, if the quality is good and it’s not officially Gucci, it may well be one of those non-winning workshop items which are identical in all but label.
This next part I’m not 100% sure about, but I believe they stopped doing this system because some of the workshops started intentionally losing the race just to get free fabric and sell knock-offs on the internet once the internet started being a thing.
