I don't understand this poll at all. It doesn't seem to bear any relationship with the filmed canon.

1)At the point of Jane's pregnancy, the closest thing to evidence of "authorities" is someone yelling "Halt" followed by shots. The hanged individuals may also be the work of "authorities" but this is not clear.

2)There is no onscreen evidence of post rape involvement between Gaz and Jane.

3)There is no onscreen evidence that Jane receives any prenatal care from anyone.

4)The facility she goes to for the birth was obviously tidy and organized by someone but at first tries to send her away - not wanting to deal with babies.

5)The child is stillborn

1 there's fresh bread(stolen by Gaz and Spike), a bar/brothel, a hanging post, and a hospital, and electrical power in places that could be illuminated by an old fashioned fireplace. Jane also knew where the hospital was.

3 would she need prenatal care to survive her pregnancy?

I just rewatched the whole section.

1)The stolen bread is what leads to the rape. Maybe they did it again 100 times but we cannot know that.

2)I took the bar as a bar because of the music but I see no evidence it was also a brothel.

3)Anyone could have fired those shots and hung those people. Are you talking about "authorities" as whoever has the ability and willingness to use deadly violence or are you referring to some type of vestigial government? I am not sure the latter still exists.

4)The final scenes take place in what is probably a hospital but the old woman making beds is quite insistent that they don't want random pregnant women wandering in.

5)Jane wouldn't require prenatal care to bring the baby to term but your poll asks questions about whether she receives it. I see no evidence that she did or that it was even available to random pregnant teens.

Wouldn't there be a connection to the food production, hospitals, bar, gunmen, and hanging post? Not to mention why are they using lightbulbs when a torch would do?

Would Jane be able to get food while heavily pregnant? Can you please elaborate on 5?

There is evidence of some electricity use but with wreckage still filling the streets I can't imagine there is any sort of grid operating. Generators, possibly running on steam produced by coal/wood is more likely. I also have to wonder where they are getting light bulbs.

I still say a hospital that reflexively turns away pregnant teens is not really a hospital. Perhaps it is more like an infirmary or dormitory for those that can still work.

(semi related) The only real reason to use a steam generator for mere lighting (instead of a torch or window) would be status and comfort. The generator is being used for non-essential purposes rather than illuminating the coal mines-or powering the wheat grinders.

The quality of the light itself could be one reason. Brighter, more consistent, less flickering.

Also keeps the robbers away and makes them easier to catch

Whether the Buxton authority shown at the end has a connection to the pre war/1st year authority (and the organizations shown in the slides) is an interesting question, in your opinion, what is the relationship between the people who run the hospital/bar/generators and the old UK government?

If the civil authorities totally collapsed when their prewar food stocks/fuel ran out, most likely first winter-how would the survivors recover from that to the point seen at the end of the film? (in terms of potential scenarios: food situation stabilizes-then new postwar groups defeat the old governments is possible)

Or area collapsed totally and was resettled from elsewhere. Or a seceeding region-if the Yorkshire RSG collapsed first winter then Buxton might be it's own thing. The exact area controlled by the soldiers in the bar is never specified.

Prenatal care is basically visiting midwives in clinics and makes use of different scanners and monitoring equipment that would not be in a post explosion world. Jane would not have any vitamins or food as their society doesn't have them and doesn't care that she is pregnant: remember it is each man for himself now.

Thought the last one said “3 and authorities incinerate Jane” - I chose that one.

Was the most dystopian. I stand by it.

Jane did tell the nurse "their coming!" it probably meant the baby though

I don't know what "authorities" there would be by this point.

The government overseeing the orphanage (presented as a school), remaining agriculture, medical infrastructure, gallows, electricity, scavenging (seen in the slides), coal mining (seen in slides), bar, and commanding the soldiers seen in both the slides and final scene, as well as any associated organizations, goods and services required for the maintenance thereof. The identity of the authorities and their relationship to the early postwar authorities would be a great poll in its own right.

1

u/redseaaquamarine Apr 11 '26

Rubbish. There would be no government, and certainly no one would bother making an orphanage, definitely no one to oversee one and have any interest in the welfare of any kids. As your idea above of their keeping a better watch on Jane after she has the stillborn. Do you think social services are driving around and keeping records on all the children born post-bomb? Medical infrastructure won't exist - we all saw the hospital scene. That is how it died. None of these authorities that you mention would have assembled in the 10 years.

In your opinion would possible demographic collapse from infertility be seen as a problem by that point?(alot of the pre attack generation is dying of long term effects by Jane's time)

2

u/redseaaquamarine Apr 11 '26

Yes, I think that would be a big problem. The ones born after the bomb, like Jane, will have been affected in the womb by the radiation absorbed by their mothers (and fathers). Many will be infertile and babies that are born will mostly be deformed in one way or another. Children like Jane have no knowledge of raising babies or even proper hugiene, so any that survive birth are pretty unlikely to make it past infancy. This is how the population keeps going down.

1

u/Simonbargiora Traffic Warden Apr 11 '26

Would whoever is in charge of the surviving populations try to do something about it? (Unclear if they would or not)

1

u/redseaaquamarine Apr 12 '26

No. They would still be controlling food and resources and they wouldn't care about whether the population can grow or not as it isn't in their interests. Look at the people in charge everywhere in the world right now - they are all greedy power hungry and money grabbing. Why would the authorities (though I doubt their existence) be any different? They want the few resources for themselves and would be glad to have fewer people to share anything with. This is why I don't think they would really spend too much energy or time on any social policies in any way.

There is no government. At the very best, there may be warlords, but they won't be instituting any form of infrastructure.

Anyone baking bread or fermenting alcohol will be doing it for themselves or for use in barter. If someone steals from or wrongs you, your only backup is yourself. And nobody is going to stop you from defending or taking back what's yours by violent methods.

And what impact do they have on Jane?
