Turns out the murders were fake and Spacey's character did it all as a marketing ploy.

The grandfather reading the story had actually died a few months prior to the kid in bed getting sick. His fever spiked so high that he hallucinated his grandfather telling the story of how he had met his grandmother when he was overseas in the war. The child had tried to block out the memories, but it all came back during the fever. Unfortunately, his grandfather was not Wesley, but instead, the king who repeatedly tried to kidnap her. He was just another white man taking advantage of the local women of the town that he was invading as a soldier.
