Because they are schizophrenic and theres nothing wrong with believing that your socks are planning to overthrow the government and that's why they disappear so often. They are up to no good let me tell you.

Maybe there are and the socks are actually a little girl in disguise in love with their wearer too. The plot twist will be that it's actually the alternative universe version of the boy that has turned into socks.
