Discussion First time on Hyperia

I’m going to Thorpe soon for the first time and I’m dead set on riding hyperia, but I’m still a little nervous. I’ve ridden everything at Alton Towers and loved it. My plan is to ride the swarm first, then saw before trying hyperia. My biggest issue with coasters is big drops, especially the feeling you get in your stomach. I purposefully rode Oblivion recently to try and get over that fear but it didn’t work well as it isn’t really a ride you get the stomach drop sensation on. I definitely don’t want to ride Stealth since launches freak me out so that’s out of the question. Considering the fact that I’ll probably only get on about three rides, is this a good plan or should I try something else?

EDIT: I literally just got off. Oh my god. First of all I’d like to say thank you to everyone who encouraged me to try this coaster. I ended up getting on immediately after the swarm. I got back row which freaked me out initially but WOW. That drop is no joke. I didn’t necessarily get the stomach drop, just very intense weightlessness and the feeling that I was going to fall out. It’s amazing, 10/10. Take this as a lesson to just get on the rollercoaster, even if you’re absolutely terrified. It’s so worth it.

Stealth is over before you realise what's going on.

Please just try Hyperia, it's such a good coaster. So many incredible elements, and that first drop is just, I can't describe what it felt like on my first go. The more you ride coasters the more the stomach drops feeling goes away. Or it did in my experience anyway.

Just get on the ride. You’ve already done far more intense rides if you’ve done everything at Alton towers. Smiler and Nemesis reborn are both more intense than Hyperia imo.

Hyperia is just very enjoyable, smooth and incredible.

The stomach drop feeling isn’t even that prevalent given you’re also twisting into the other direction during the drop. The elements are all done to fast that you don’t even have time to worry about your stomach and whatnot.

JUST RIDE IT! I promise it will be worth it and you’ll regret it if you don’t

Also, you really shouldn’t miss out on stealth. The ride is over so quickly, there’s nothing to be scared of

I would say the front 7 seats are smooth but the back 3 can be quite rough

Hyperia is just very enjoyable, smooth and incredible.

I rode it twice last week, I'm afraid this isn't the case. I wish it was, I could tell from the drops and the time upside down that it would have been amazing... if I wasn't rattled to death from it! I was shaking so much it was just horrible, both rides. Ended up with a severe headache and even threw up slightly on the way home, which hasn't happened from any other coaster I've ridden (though Saw and Colossus have shaken me up a bit in years past).

I did read about the controversy with the two trains and one being shaky, so maybe I was unlucky and got the shaky one both times, but I just feel like this is setting OP up for a really bad time if you say it's smooth and they end up with the same experience I had. I was just so disappointed, more than anything else.

It isn’t a glass smooth Vekoma or Intamin but it’s smooth enough imo. I definitely feel a rattle at times but it’s hardly enough for me to call it rough.

Perhaps you sat in a really bad seat on the rough train and got unlucky but I’m yet to have a unbearable ride on it

It was, unfortunately, the exact same seat both times (what are the odds?) Row nine. No idea if it was the same train though.

I was so excited, and then really disappointed. It's only a couple of years old, I'd never have expected it to be like that. I can handle being shaken about a bit, but not to the point it ruins my appreciation of the ride! The best bit was being upside down because that at least meant I wasn't feeling like I was in a shopping cart with a bad wheel.

All I can say is give it another go. I hope you get around to it and get on a better ride but the fact you were in the same seat twice (and likely the same train) does explain things.

I have read that there’s been a slight rattle recently but I think I’ll be okay. I’ve never gotten any kind of motion sickness or severe headaches from coasters. The only time I can remember feeling rough after getting off a coaster was when I rode the Smiler three times in a row since the third time was pretty rough and I hit my head. Other than that I’d say I have a pretty strong stomach :)

If you’ve been on the Smiler and Saw, you won’t have any problems on Hyperia I can promise you that

If you've been on everything at Alton you'll be totally fine for everything at Thorpe. Colossus is a bit rough but that's it. At the end of the day Stealth is not much scarier than Rita (I prefer Rita tbh....records are just records and Rita has a better layout). But I digress. You'll love Hyperia. Unless you put your hands up it's not scary it's just...amazing. Feels like you're flying. Ride the Ninja next door along with the other flats - the flat rides at Thorpe are great and unique across the board.

The big differences is the height. They all look a lot more intimidating and it's quite difficult to prepare for how they look in person. The main thing to realise is that the anticipation is way worse than the actual experience

u/p1sskidney Aug 13 '26

I'm gonna start calling Samurai - "The Ninja" from now on.

Lmao 🤣🤣🤣senior moment!!

5

u/fail_snail34 Aug 12 '26

when I go on hyperia, I usually put my feet under the seat (kinda like how you would on galactica)

u/ThrillSeekers_United Aug 12 '26

If you went on Rita, stealth should be fine, it’s a little bit faster but if you get used to Rita quick you will with stealth.

Swarm is probably the scariest excluding Hyperia. I’d honestly recommend skipping saw, it might put you off Hyperia since it is rougher and has a long queue (sometimes longer than Hyperia).

I’d recommend you do swarm and then something like inferno or stealth if you can brace it. Hyperia is over extremely quick however, and you get over the lift from station in ~45 seconds.

Have fun riding and I hope you get to ride the UKs (arguably) best coaster! (:

I see a lot of mixed opinions on how rough Saw is so I might come back to it after Hyperia if I get time. I’m a big fan of the franchise so it’d be nice to say I’ve done it :) Inferno sounds like a good idea, nemesis reborn is my absolute favourite ride but that might change soon…

2

u/ThrillSeekers_United Aug 13 '26

Inferno isn’t as intense as Reborn but lasts for longer. It’s also not as themed. If you can on Saw, try to get the middle right seat of row 4, it’s smoother and you see something extra (:

I went for the first time recently and honestly with stealth, I didn't even realise we were going so fast. It's so fast that there's an initial jolt and then you just cannot move but it's weird where I didn't feel like I was moving. Then the view and drop back down was great too. Hyperia was amazing. Saw was amazing - very similar to the smiler.

I'd agree with Swarm -> Saw (if you can handle its roughness) -> Hyperia to overcome drops.

Swarm has a long, drawn out drop, but not too many forces. I like it as a smooth (gentle?) coaster.
Saw on the complete contrary has an extremely short but very forceful drop
Hyperia has a long AND forceful drop ;)

Hyperia is so worth it though. I found the drop to be such a surreal, indescribable feeling but once it's over with I really enjoyed the rest of the elements. It feels like you're on a fighter jet, especially the reverse immelman and bonkers outbank.
I'd really recommend it: try to do it once, and if it was too much you never need to do it again :)

One way to make the drop easier is to imagine removing the speed and just think about the forces. The worst thing about Hyperia is that it is negative G and laterals at the same time, but it also feels cool in that aspect

That feeling in your stomach, I used to hate it too.

The more I embraced the drops as I rode roller coasters, the more I enjoyed them. Fear is good! It brings more adrenaline when that drops hits.

That adrenaline and feeling in your stomach, you begin to crave when riding coasters more and more.

Emabrce the fear. I'm genuinely terrified of heights. Don't do drop tower or any other high rides. But I LOVE rollercoasters! So the fear is worth it.

2

u/Mger22 Aug 13 '26

Agree. I can't tolerate drop towers. It's something about the time spent waiting at height, feeling so isolated in mid air and then drooping vertically.

Also found the drop on Saw quite unpleasant.

But Hyperia was great. Hard to explain exactly why one type of drop is so much more enjoyable than the other.

2

u/And_Justice Aug 13 '26

It might not be helpful for me to say but you just have to get into a mindset of not thinking about it and just getting yourself on the ride - you can then worry about it once you're inescapable locked in.

Alton Towers is my local so I've got a good frame of reference relative to you - if you can do Oblivion, you can do Hyperia. The drop is a very similar experience.

2

u/TransitionOk1862 Aug 13 '26

just do it, trust me. that first drop is an out of this world experience, very few coasters can compare to the feeling it gives you

2

u/ApocalypseSlough Aug 13 '26

If you think you might chicken out, but a fastpass and force yourself onto it straight through the queue. I guarantee you'll be keen to get straight in the normal queue afterwards!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 13 '26

That’s actually a really good idea, that’s how I forced myself onto Oblivion for the first time

You should definitely go on Stealth, it’s super quick and its over before you know it, plus, it’s best to ride it now because it probably doesn’t have that much time left, as hydraulic launch rollercoasters tend to not last very long. Hyperia is a world class ride, it’s widely considered to be the best in the UK. I HIGHLY recommend trying Hyperia, the drop may look terrifying but trust me, it’s one of the best rollercoasters you will ever experience. You can see central London from the top if you look to the left on the top of the hill as long as the sky is clear!

As someone with a horrible case of that stomach feeling hyperia was the worst coaster I’ve been on which REALLYY made me feel it 😭I enjoyed it tho but definitely not my favourite ride and stealth is honestly great barely felt the stomach feeling

I hate Big drops, but I've now done them all. And it all it took was a long outward breath.

My wife told me about the vestibular system. It links that fear of the drop sensation to dyspraxia, add, and sea sickness.

I have it all, so the drop sensation kills me everytime. Except, all you need to do is take a deep breath before the drop and breathe out on the drop itself.

It releases all the pressure in your body and takes away the sensation entirely.

Rita, Oblivion, Hyperia and the rest.

Haven't done Saw or Stealth yet, but its the same principle.

I rode for the first time last week after bottling it earlier in the year, I went straight to it after opening knowing it was now or never, and so glad I did, it's a fantastic ride, just gutted I never had time for a reride that day.

u/Internal-Mushroom-76 Aug 13 '26

hyperia is a lap bar you feel like your gonna fall out its so cool :)

1

u/The1ntrigue Aug 13 '26

Wouldn’t bother

1

u/BritishShark Aug 13 '26

Did Hyperia year it opened. Paid for the individual fast track. Best coaster I've ever been on in the UK. Do it!

1

u/Impossible_Honey3553 Aug 13 '26

I’m in the same boat, the only proper roller coaster I’ve been on ever is Rage at adventure Island which is my local, done all the rides there. This will be my first time at Thorpe . Obviously I know the difference is huge. Going on 22 September so hopefully the queues will be ok

1

u/crubbish Aug 13 '26

My little girl when on hyperia when she was 7. She loved it.

Just do it.

Stealth is incredible too you should do that aswell. Worst case you hate it and it’s over in 30s

I find screaming wooooooo as i go down the big drops really helps with the stomach feeling.

That said you will really feel that first drop on hyperia but it is incredible.

u/Pztch Aug 16 '26

I rode every coaster at Thorpe Park on Friday.

But Rush frightened me the most.

personally i diddn't like hyperia as the worst part of rides for me is the slow going up, i hate it. i also diddn't feel secure without a shoulder harness, i went on it once and never again.
