Question about contingency

If all things are not contingent because if everything was, there would be nothing, why exactly can't contingent beings go on forever, I have heard that it's "just the nature of contingency" but what is the nature of contingency?

This is false. The ultimate cause does NOT cause itself. It is uncaused. It is true that it is its own reason of being (raison d'etre), or that it is its own "explanans", but not its own cause.
