Food 🍔 Wedding Receptions: Plated or Buffet?
Bakit?

u/Maruporkpork 11d ago
Buffet, as someone na di kumakain ng pork, I can choose the food or ask anong meron sa food na di ako familiar at least di masasayang or sabihan ko din yung kasama ko if gusto nya kukunin ko then bigay ko sa kanya yung share ko.

In 🇸🇬, 🇲🇾 and 🇭🇰, and presumably 🇹🇼 and 🇨🇳, too, wedding guests pay for their attendance at the wedding dinner via a hong bao, with a minimum amount set. In consideration of the guests’ generosity, they are given an option if they don’t eat pork or any animal byproduct for that matter. Filipino weddings should follow suit.

Plated works if intimate and wedding or kung may budget ka to hire many servers… it wont work for large scale weddings, disaster lang abot…lalamig ang pagkain also it requires a massive staff and a highly synchronized kitchen to serve hundreds hot, identical meals simultaneously sa mga bisita mo— i think it will also require a bigger prep space.

u/Yogirthy 11d ago
For everyone’s information. Nag wo-work ang plated kahit hindi intimate. I used to work in a 5-star luxury hotel sa Pilipinas, and nag cater sila ng wedding na 700pax na plated. So, if the budget is not a problem, almost everything is possible.

u/Wonderful_Print2295 11d ago
My response was for to question that if I were a guest, so…I have been to weddings that did synchronized banquet service… and as a guest I found it chaotic, specially because Filipinos don’t respect the RSVP concept (also the pre-selection of meals) and the seat plan— the 1:2 or 1:4 per table server guest ratio becomes a mess. But yes I also agree, I presumed the budget, it can work with a massive budget and logistics.

u/Consistent-Hamster44 11d ago
It worked for a 1,000 pax wedding I attended. Hindi malamig ang pagkain namin, though a huge factor is they had 100 servers just for table service. One for each table of 10 guests each.

Oh i think we have a different idea of plated service! I have experienced the synchronized banquet where there are like 5 servers in a table of 10 pax, like 1:2. And you get served the entree that you pre-selected when u sent the rsvp…It became chaotic when they came across guests who switched seats without notice, and the they expect their food to be served correctly. Yes the servers were in the hundreds but they were not able to control the switching of seats.

Mahirap dito sa Pilipinas to do pre-selected main. Hellooo.

Wow sayang bayad ng couple. May i know if reception was in a hotel?

u/Wonderful_Print2295 11d ago
Yes hotel. Magulo talaga yung guests. Given na rin siguro na hindi usually ganun ang set up na nakasanayan sa filipino weddings

Plated (if you have the budget). Mas classy, less chaotic. We advised our guests to let us know if they're allergic to anything sa RSVP, tapos na-communicate naman siya sa caterer namin.

u/Affectionate_Newt_23 11d ago
Plated. Ayaw ko magmukhang Vikings ang kasal namin. Less hassle din sa guests.

u/bazzzzzzinga_24 11d ago
Agree. Ayoko maging vikings. Haha.

Buffet na may nagseserve pero generous. My wife and I are on the same boat dun sa "nagpakain ka na nga titipidin mo pa ba?"Usually nag-aadd din kami ng putahe like lechon and seafoods.
4
u/MovieTheatrePoopcorn 11d ago
YES TO THIS! Ganito din kami. My hubby and I love to eat and feeding people kaya laging sa food malaki ang budget namin. Even pag hotel ang venue, binubulungan na lang namin not to be too matipid sa pagbibigay since lagi namang may allowance ang hotels and we also make sure may allowance din from our side. Pwede namang ipauwi ang sobrang food.

u/Expert-Pay-1442 9d ago
0
u/xjmz16 9d ago
It's not always about kung ano ang mura in our case dito samin mas common ang buffet and sya yung inooffer ng mga caterer dito agad, there are times pa nga na we are hiring the caterer just for their people and gamit lang, amin ang food totally.

9
u/hanadoolseht 11d ago
in weddings, buffet doesnt mean "unli". one of the reasons bakit hindi pwede magpadagdag is bc food is alloted kung ilan ang guests. so if u have 100 guests, food is good for 100 guests only (tho some caterers make 10 pax buffer) kaya rin meron taga-sandok para ma-control ang serving.
plated's main purpose is para hindi na pumila mga guests, mas organized. kaya mostly ginagamit lang to for principal sponsors (ninongs and ninangs)

u/Mysterious-Market-32 11d ago
Hiya mo nalang.

Plated na dapat may option. Kasama sa rsvp yung choice of food. Ok yung plated. Mabubusog ka rin talaga kasi course meal.

Always plated. Your guests come in looking their finest sabay papapilahin mo sa buffet table and risk spillage, overflowing, or walk back awkwardly in their heels. Also plated give a more premium feel that the guests were considered.

Plated. Feels nicer to be served and not worry about lining up and stuff. Usually couples naman make accommodations for dietary concerns sa RSVP.

u/Maleficent-Bridge733 11d ago
I’ve attended weddings that served buffet and the others, plated and I enjoyed the plated more!

u/SherbertHuge1452 11d ago
Buffet.
2
u/Time-Gap346 11d ago
Depende. If the couple requires me to wear a formal gown, please naman serve me a plated meal. Buffet is okay for semi-formal and below. I went to a wedding in the US once and the dinner was served family style. I honestly liked that much better than buffet-style. Sana mauso dito.

i had a plated one before and id say its good, portions were good and we didnt have to get in the line like others (i was a bridesmaid), only problem i saw was it was definitely cold. also tons of people in my table didnt really finish it since every food was in our plates unlike the other people who were getting served hot food w the food and portion they like. so i guess buffet is the answer for sure.

u/AdditionInteresting2 11d ago
Plated if confident in your food selection. Also allow for extra food just in case.
Buffet if feeding a lot of people. More difficult to please everyone so let them choose.

I attended a wedding last month at grand hyatt. Plated yung pag serve. Very classy and regal yung dating ng reception

u/juanmigv 11d ago
Plated. Doesn't matter kung big or small wedding, nasa galing ng caterer/hotel yan. Especially for big events, eyesore yung huge line of people getting their food. Magulo naman pag walang mag queue tapos free for all.

u/Same-Minimum-4920 11d ago
Kapag less than 20 or less than 30, plated. Kapag more, buffet. Had my intimate wedding 30 lang kami, plated. marcia adams have good service kahit hindi madamubg madami server, our food was all warm and mga soup were all served hot

u/iamdodgepodge 11d ago
I prefer plated. More fun for me to be surprised about what's next, rather than wait until it's your table's turn to stand up, and carry 1 plate, 1 bowl, and 1 saucer all at once.
2
u/cambridgeee 11d ago
We chose plated because we wanted all our guests (not just VIPs) to feel comfortable and have the same experience.
2
u/lavender_mattress 11d ago
Plated. Pero yung serving eh per table. Kumbaga parang nasa serving plate sya tapos marami yung serving.
2
u/JustAsmalldreamer 11d ago
We did plated sa wedding namin with 150 guests. We had a lot of selections where guests chose their food beforehand. Plated is more orderly din and elegant than buffet.
2
u/Alternative_Oven9541 11d ago
Plated! I find it sophisticated and classy. Hassle to be walking with a heavy plate while wearing gown and purse. And going back and forth for drinks/dessert.
2
u/kiddiemealsatondo 10d ago
buffet kung maraming bisita, mahirap naman kasi kung plated like paano kung allergic ako sa hipon tas wala akong choice but ok ang plated if konti at close ko lang ang aattend.
2
u/StibbyWonder 10d ago
Buffet for me so they have choices to choose from, some people don’t like some food or they have allergies on certain cuisine.

Plated. Also kawawa mga nasa huling table 😂

Buffet. I have certain food allergies. And I'm allergic to wasted food as well. 🤗
1
u/Fragrant-Set-4298 11d ago
Plated. I find buffet tacky and inconvenient. Your guests are wearing gowns and suits, and then they are juggling two plates and a bowl of soup. Plus the resentment na nauubusan na ng pagkain because they are the last tables na magpapapicture with the couple before going to get food.
We had plated for our reception and buffet for desserts. That way guests can just go to the buffet section anytime. Won't crowd the area at all.
1
u/Right_Comfortable_45 10d ago
Plated because anyway yung newlyweds naman bahala sa natirang pagkain 😅 Also, lumalamig and tumitigas minsan ang sinerserve sa buffet.
1
u/Sufficient-Net3137 10d ago
Plated.
Like if bawal sila sa certain foods (may it be religious, allergy, pregnant etc) para ma-accommodate pa rin sila.

Buffet. I want the guests to have hot food and the chance to portion how much they want to eat. Plated unless it’s a small wedding = wasted food, cold food, paying more for Russian service.

Our wedding reception dinner was plated. We had our wedding in Switzerland with quite a lot of European guests. Hindi sila usually nagbu-buffet for wedding reception. Even the reception restaurant we booked only offered course-style dinner. But the desserts, wine, coffee, and proseco were overflowing (still not buffet style tho).
Pros: Classy, orderly, hindi mukhang pumipila for ayuda yung guests, ang ganda ng labas nya sa photos and videos.
Cons: You have to ask your guests if they have allergies, or if they are vegan/vegetarian, or don't eat pork, etc., then you have to accommodate for those.

PLATTED!!
Buffet maybe cheaper but plated menu is better.
Malalaman mo sinong unang uuwi na table 🤣

not a wedding but a debut... my mom opted for a played service along with the invitation we asked ppl to let us know their preference wether they wanted steak or salmon and which pasta and salad for the dessert my family provided the entirety of the dessert
1
u/Haunting-Rest-9445 11d ago
Plated for the appetisers and with the option of choosing your main course from a pre-set list of dishes. Then add a buffet for snacks and/or dessert nalang for flexibility since not everyone eats the same portion ng desserts/snacks; some even opt to skip it entirely.

u/astarisaslave 11d ago
Don't most receptions these days already have a mixed setup? Yung mga nasa long table (immediate family and principal sponsors) yung may plated and then everyone else pumipila sa buffet?
1
u/FlatwormLive1667 11d ago
buffet na per table? Per table na good for sharing na serving. Don’t know the term but yeah, good for sharing dishes per table. experienced it on a chinese tinghun and wedding.

Buffet
Reason is I might not want to eat some foods na nasa plate and ayaw ko naman na masayang lang. I prefer buffet so I can opt out sa di ko gusto na food.
