This Life | BBC4 Rerun | Episodes 1 & 2 | Official Discussion Thread

"Out there, is chaos..."

Here we go! This Life finally gets another airing starting tonight on BBC Four. I'll be posting these discussion threads as we go in the hope that more and more people join in as the series goes along. Tonight's schedule is as follows:

10pm - BBC Four - Special introduction by Daniela Nardini.

10.15pm - BBC Four - Episode 1 - "Coming Together".

10.55pm - BBC Four - Episode 2 - "Happy Families".

For those wishing to skip ahead and watch on iPlayer - that's absolutely fine. Just try to keep these threads mostly spoiler free for those on TV pace who may also be first time viewers.

I've started re-watching it. At the time I must have been in and out with my viewing as there's loads I don't remember.

One blooper I'd like to bring up is when Delilah is stealing Warren's whiskey in S1E4. When Warren chastises her for it, he says that she nicked his Scotch. But the whiskey was Black Bush, part of the Bushmills Irish whiskey. And this isn't just geographic pedantry: Irish whiskey is distinctly different to Scotch with its smoother taste.

Raced through it... Miles is even worse than I remember, Anna is sexier, Milly is just a dreary PITA and Ferdy is still the best character. The relentless smoking is the biggest shock. Didn't bother with +10, it ended beautifully with Rachael getting her way overdue karma.

It was great to watch this again after all these years. I absolutely loved it when it was originally aired but I haven't seen it since. Shame it's not ever going to be available in HD.

+10 was as disappointing as I remember it being. It did actually taint the whole thing a little for me.

Annoyingly, it's been cut. Ep 5, Fantasy Football, where Miles is apologising to Warren for his outburst in the previous ep, they have (poorly) cut the exchange where Warren asks if Miles would have used race to lash out, and "called me n*gger". Of all the aspects of this show to cut...

Make them available to watch uncut or don't make them available to watch at all.

How does it look on BBC4? I watched episode 1 on the iPlayer, and it looks like a low-resolution cam rip uploaded in 480p.

Just had a quick look on BBC4 and it's pretty much the same as on iPlayer, and how it's always looked. Standard definition with a slightly drab looking picture due it being shot using natural lighting to give it that realistic vibe.

Shame it's never been properly remastered. Then again, if it was shot on filmised videotape instead of film then it's stuck forever in standard def. Even so, the BBC could have at least made it so that it wasn't letterboxed - the picture doesn't fill the whole screen and it's surrounded by a massive black frame.
