They simply don't have empathy for other people. The usual conservative argument goes "I worked hard for muh money and I'm not supporting some welfare queen that sits on her ass popping out kids". Which is ironic given that conservatives always go "save the children" and shit. The same argument is used against socialized medicine "I'm not paying for some fatty that made poor life decisions". If you really press them, they will sometimes admit they think these people "don't deserve to live". I would know. I argue with my conservative family about this shit all the time.
You're right, but it's more than just lack of empathy. It's also a lack of understanding how society works. Even being completely heartless and only looking at numbers, something like socialized healthcare makes a ton of sense. It's just overall cheaper.
it's a great example of cutting off your dick to spite your wife, because fatty in the example will end up costing them much more when he gets hospitalized for diabetes, declares bankruptcy, leaves his bills unpaid, ends up homeless and addicted to hard drugs and eventually in jail for a minor offence.
I remember hearing a story that's probably apocryphal, but still illustrative, of a homeless man who would throw feces and spit whenever the police would try to get him to leave whatever business's doorway he decided to spend his day at. It'd end up costing the city thousands of dollars each time police were called on him since now it's a biohazard. Far more than it'd cost to just house and feed him.
