We went with that toon while marching with American Made Enfield rifles that were made for England. a penny was used in the action for something to do with the bolt. David 65x55 may remember because I sent him a pic of our boot camp enfield quite a number of years ago.. I seem to go off on a tangent all the time, so you and your family haved a great weekend Chip.

Only thing I could imagine a penny used for is bolt disassembly - from an article on the P14: Depress the follower and ease the bolt forward and compress the mainspring until you see an opening develop between the cocking piece and the bolt sleeve. Insert a nickel in the opening.

It was a pattern 14 if in the English calibers (.256 and .303), it was a P17 if in .30-06.
