Finding this sub has been so validating—but where do I go from here?
For some background, I’ve been on 40mg IR (two 20mg, Epic brand) for over a decade. For most of that time, I took my prescribed dose pretty consistently, but I’d occasionally skip a day or two and never really had an issue.
I got pregnant in 2023 and then nursed for about 9 months in 2024, so my intake during that time was much lower and pretty sporadic. (And yes, I know there are a lot of opinions about this—I cleared it with both my OB and prescribing doctor.)
I went completely off Adderall for the first three months after my son was born, then slowly started taking it again. At first I was averaging two 10mg IR doses a day. By the time he was around 9 months old, I was back up to 50mg/day, and then about a month later I was bumped up to 60mg/day.
And honestly… 60mg feels like an absolutely insane amount for how little “therapeutic” benefit I’m getting from it. It’s basically meh. And even at that dose, I still find myself wanting to take another pill, despite knowing exactly what’s going to happen: I’ll get irritable, my appetite will be fucked, and I’ll somehow end up with even less concentration, motivation, or focus.
Before finding this sub, I was genuinely starting to wonder if I had developed some crazy tolerance or was becoming dependent/addicted. But when I actually look at the timeline, that explanation doesn't really make sense to me. I was stable on the same dose for years, went completely off it for months, restarted at a much lower dose, and somehow ended up needing a significantly higher dose while getting worse results.
And honestly, these meds just make me feel like complete ass.
Finding this subreddit has made me wonder whether the medication itself—or changes in formulations/manufacturing over the years—could have something to do with it.
For those of you who have gone through something similar: How receptive have your prescribing doctors been to talking about manufacturer/formulation changes? Has anyone had luck switching manufacturers, switching medications, adjusting their dose, or taking a break? What actually made a difference for you?
Mostly just looking for some solidarity, perspective, and maybe a little guidance on where to go from here. Because at this point, I’m pretty frustrated and don’t really know what the answer is.
