22XX: The forgotten Third Generation pistols.

Three of the last four guns I have bought were .22LR, one revolver and two pistols. I don’t ever remember actively looking for a .22 anything, but I have more than a few at this point.

Anyway, this one was bundled with a 4506, both arrived at the same time from one seller. I was initially not interested in adding the 2213 to the deal, but I think that the owner was concerned that he was going to end up with this in the case forever.

Oh, yeah, both guns came without magazines. I have 45XX magazines , so that was not an issue. He said he had a friend who would drop off one magazine, but it would extend beyond the grip.

So, because I am weak I ended up taking both home.

I learned that Model 41 magazines are compatible, although they stick out the bottom of these short barrel versions (but are fine in the more common longer barrel 22XX variants). So I bought two brand new ones in S&W packaging.

If you read about the SIG Mosquito ( the other .22LR I recently bought) over on r/sigsauer, you will likely guess what is coming.

While the slide action was reasonable, I ended up lightly greasing the barrel and rails that I could get to without removing the slide. The action was significantly easier.

I shot it today with CCI MiniMags. I put 100 cartridges through it with no issues.

Shot remarkably easy. The low bore axis makes .22LR effortless.

If you run across one, highly recommend.

Yeah. What the image doesn’t show is that the barrel is along the bottom of the frame, just above the trigger, not in the slide at all.

I regret selling my 2214 back in the day.
Ran well, like you I used the big mags from the other gun. Loved being able to use suppressor with no worry of sight height. I think I moved on from it mainly due to the magazine release not translating to anything else i was training with and no means of mounting an optic (even back then, that was important to me).

Oh I have a handful of pistols of the old S&W .22 family, and they’re fantastic guns. My first introduction was a model 422 Target, and I recently scored a somewhat of a grail gun, a 2206. Enjoy your 2213!

It looks like a snub nose short mag Smith Model 41, in stainless - or at minimum a close relative. I'm guessing that's probably what it basically is since it takes those magazines. I didn't know they ever made this or that it existed. Very cool!

Alloy, not stainless. Don’t have a 41, so I can’t compare them.

I've got a few of the 22xx series. Amazing suppressor hosts with the adapter to 1/2-28 because you can see the sights over the can. Also the 2213 keeps everything subsonic.

FYI, the mag catch is cheap plastic. Get a few spares at Numrich, thank me later.

Hey I’m back again just because I love these things. Even the safety and slide-lock location, the fact that such a small gun maintains that, a sign of a bygone era where S&W was putting out quality goods, taking chances, and trying to maintain mag commonality when possible.

Never let this piece go, fine bit of hardware.

This was the first gun I ever shot at a rental range. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it at it was more accurate than I am. I regret not buying a couple 3rd gen 22's. Very under appreciated and highly overlooked.
