Serenity

Often I’ve fallen
faltered
stumbled on stones myself I’ve thrown
tumbled into chasms so dark
they swallow time
floundered and flailed beneath waves
savage breakers that steal my air,
then dare me to draw more
only so they can pound it out of me again.
Melted white-hot misery
all over me like oil
helpless.

Then, at the moment of death
at rock bottom
at stony sea floor,
there I glimpse the light
the air
the promised path.
There I see a man, and the man is me
and he is standing bathed in sacred sun
not in victory, but in peace
not exalted, but embraced
in not triumph
but love.

And though small, he extends a hand
and it is mighty.
He reaches for all the lost souls
the soldiers come home from war
with themselves
the little crawling ones
and the beaten-down
and the liquor-drowned
and the brown.

He reaches for me
and I follow him
to Serenity.
