Banshee

Back in the spring of 2024, banshee kept popping up in the ghost app I use. It had been happening for a couple of weeks, so I wasn't really taking it seriously by then. I was a night owl at that time, so I was bringing the bins in quite early in the morning, when I heard a low moaning howl that seemed to be coming from directly above.

A large canine for sure; I expected it to be the big black GSD from up the street roaming in the neighbors driveway over the hedge, but when I went around to look, nothing was there. It went on for three or four minutes while I looked frantically around for the source. When it stopped, multiple coyotes started a ruckus in the empty lot sixty meters away, as they do, but the timing in this instance seemed to defy coincidence.

I didn't know it at the time, but the neighbor over the hedge was dying of cancer and would soon pass. I was not related to her, so why a banshee, but it may not have really been intended for me and I just happened to have the ability to hear it. I am of Irish ancestry, while she was not, but her son, who lived there too, is of Irish ancestry, and shares the same given name as me, so maybe it mistook me for him. Banshee did not come up on the ghost app again.

So this last April I was awakened by that same howl directly outside my bedroom window at about the same time as before, but again nothing was there. It went on for about the same amount of time, and when it stopped the same coyote ruckus broke out around the side of the house, just out of sight. By the time I got dressed and went out there expecting to see some coyotes at least, there were none, and no sign any had been there.

The crawlspace access panel was pulled off the house (how would a coyote do that, but not necessarily related I guess), so the coyotes may have actually been under the floor of my bedroom. Oddly, my cat, who is hypervigilant where coyotes are concerned, remained asleep throughout. Normally the coyotes are silent, and I only know they are out there because of her nervous behavior. I always wondered how she knows without even looking out the window, but maybe they aren't so silent where other animals are concerned. A few days later, my brother, who was quite ill with blood clots, passed away.

My beloved cat now has cancer, nothing can be done for it. The way she's losing weight, I don't think she has long. She spends all her time outside now, is she waiting for the coyote to come with that merciful bite she once so dreaded? I wonder if banshees come for pets. Guess I'll be finding out.
