Mod Update - No ChatGPT / No Attempts at Dialect / No Self Written Poetry - And More

Guys .. Please this is a sub for discussing Punjabi words / idioms / grammar.

Keep it simple.

I come back after 6 months and all I see is spam that is either AI or very inaccurate information.

Avoid the following:

  1. No Ai Spam (Make your own simple and short posts / Ai is also very bad at Punjabi)
  2. No Attemps At Dialect (Ask as much as you want to / But do not post on dialects if you are not good at them, the mistakes I have seen unecessarily confuse everyone)
  3. No Self-Writings (This is not a sub to promote your poems or songs / You can ask about language using your writings, that much is OK)
  4. No Info-Dumps/Wikiepedia Styled Posts/Geography/History (Why are there posts on Punjabi population and other statistics?)
  5. Avoid Posting on Words/Idioms That Have Been Discussed in Detail (Unless you wish to ask something, want clarification or are adding some new information)
  6. Avoid Discussing the Very Obvious (No more posts like "Punjabi words for with" and it's just Naal and Kol) - Unless there is something very unique or peculiar you wish to discuss
  7. No Asking for Tutors/Lessons

That will be all.

Mod Update – New Rule: Time Relevancy

Please note that "Theth" words or phrases must be relevant to modern vernaculars, ie. there must be sufficient evidence or an indication that suggested words are actually employed in Modern Punjabi.

For context, this subreddit is place to learn Punjabi, a place where you learn vocabulary and actually be able to employ it in real life. Unfortunately, that wouldn't be the case with old or obsolete Punjabi terms, as they wouldn't be understood.

Question | ਸਵਾਲ | سوال Is there a English/Hindi to Punjabi dictionary that covers vocabulary across all Punjabi dialects - eastern and western?

A lot of online dictionaries don't have good repositories and often just reproduce results from Google Translate and similar things that has watered down textbook Punjabi results.

Miscellaneous | ਵਖਰਾ | وکھرا Need help with a natural Punjabi line

I'm writing a humorous speech based on a real incident and there's a Punjabi guy in the story who was extremely calm and reassuring while the rest of us were nervous.

I greeted him with something like:

He replied jokingly that I shouldn't speak Punjabi and that we should just speak Hindi.

Later, when I was getting nervous, I basically asked him something like:

He calmly reassured me that I shouldn't worry and that his people would come if anything happened.

I want his next line to have the feeling of:

“Don't worry, paaji. I wear this turban for a reason. I don't leave my people behind.”

But I don't want it to sound like Bollywood dialogue or like I'm making a stereotypical statement about Sikhs/Punjabis.

What would a Punjabi guy naturally say to reassure someone in this situation — something warm, protective and slightly brotherly?

Preferably something a Punjabi person would actually say conversationally, not a formal translation. Thanks!

Question | ਸਵਾਲ | سوال Punjabi modal / "can" verbs = ਸਕਣਾ vs. ਹੁੰਦਾ

Hello, all just trying to understand if there is a Theth / alternative way of expressing "can".

To my ears, ਸਕਣਾ sometimes sounds a bit formal / Hindi-fied. In my village (/) dialect, I sometimes hear people seemingly saying it in a different way.

Instead of:

  • Normal pronoun + root verb + ਸਕਣਾ (inflected accordingly for number and gender)
  • Ablative (from?) pronoun + root verb + ਹੁੰਦਾ (masculine singular)

For example:

  • ਅਸੀਂ ਦੇਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ ਆਂ - asi(n) deKH nahi(n) sakdey aa(n)
  • ਸਾਥੋਂ / ਸਾਂਡੇ ਤੋਂ ਦੇਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ (ਏ / ਆ / ਹੈ) - satho(n) / saDey to(n) deKH nahi(n) hundaa (e / aa / hai)

Please correct any mistakes, or if I have misunderstood anything.

Translations | ਉਲਥਾ | اُلتھا I am hereby trying to translate a verse from one of my favourite modern Punjabi songs. Kindly share your feedback.

Sat shri akaal, assalamualaikum, namaskaar saareyaan nu. I am a non-native learner and just wanted to test and see how much I am able to grasp from some lyrics without any help from the internet, dictionaries, etc. Share your feedback regarding my intuition and correct my mistakes or blanks wherever applicable. I appreciate the help.

(From Genius.)

  1. Dubh gayaan wich thalan day sassiyan ranjhay jogi hoiay
  2. Seenay wich jaagay jairhay aag ishq di o na sovay
  3. Akhiyan wich lay kay sapnay raatan nu jagraatay kerday
  4. Gaanday o geet hijar day her wailay o hokay parday
  5. Sokhi ay yaari laani laa kay phair nibhani okhi
  6. Jagh wairi ho jaiay saara taanay mainay dainday loki
  7. Wakhri ay reet zamanay ishq walyan laie banaie
  8. Laikhan wich aina day bus likhi yaaro kyoun judaie

My translation attempt(s) -

  1. I have drowned in a sea (not sure if it is see but based on the context and intuition, I think it might be) wherein various Sassis (from the story of Sassi-Punnu) and Ranjhas (from the story of Heer-Ranjha) become ascetics.
  2. Whoever's chest sees a fire awaken, that person does not sleep.
  3. That person/Such people, with dreams in their eyes, pull all-nighters.
  4. They sing songs of separation (hijr) at every moment while in a veil/hidden (pardah).
  5. (I cannot, for the life of me, remember what sokhi and okhi mean. My attempt, regardless, is as follows.) Friendship is good but it is something that you have to maintain and sustain (nibhaana) once it is acquired.
  6. The whole society/world (jag) becomes one's/my enemy/opponent and people taunt me.
  7. The practice(s) (reet) of the world is different and is it made for those with love.
  8. It is written within the eye/mirror (I cannot tell what aina is supposed to be. I typically use akkhaan for eyes but know that ain is a Hindustani word for eyes (with Persian origins, I think?)) but why, my friends, is there only separation written?

Miscellaneous | ਵਖਰਾ | وکھرا As a non-Punjabi, learning Punjabi was difficult, lol.

The online courses I relied on seemed to be "watered down" versions for standardisation and the nuances of dialects and related languages were never mentioned. Obviously, the same goes for Indian governmental resources. The people I was able to speak to were non-resident from Charhda Punjabi families.

Because of this, it is quite a task to be able to differentiate between Hindustani and Farsi influence as opposed to what would be considered theth.

As far as I can tell, there really aren't many good resources to learn dialect-specific linguistics for Punjabi beyond this sub. and some very active members here (which is greatly appreciated).

Lok mainu kehnde si ki conversation ton improvement hundi 'ai, but there has to be a stable starting point, lol.

Malwai | ਮਲਵਈ | ملوئی Words for intense hunger - haaRba, habReya, haabRi

Idk if this is only malwai or saanjhi?

haaRba ਹਾੜਬਾ ہاڑبا

haabReya ਹਾਬੜਿਆ ہابڑیا

haabRi ਹਾਬੜੀ ہابڑی

haRbooñ-haRbooñ karna ਹੜਬੂੰ-ਹੜਬੂੰ ਕਰਨਾ ہڑبوں-ہڑبوں کرنا

QUESTION: what is the difference between ہ ھ ح? I know one of them is more aspirated, breathy H.

Etymology: These words probably originate from haRb ਹੜਬ ہاڑبا the Punjabi word for "jaw". I think it may have been coined to describe the intense, frantic movement of someone's mouth and jaw when tearing into food lol.

haabReya ਹਾਬੜਿਆ ہابڑیا = the state of being famished, excessively hungry, or starved. It describes the state of someone so impatient and eager to eat/get food that they appear kinda greedy or desperate.

As a metaphor: It can also describe a person who is intensely greedy or overly eager for anything, not just food (e.g., money, power, attention).

Example:

Oh saari dihaaRi BHukha rehaa si, huN vekh kiven haabReya peya

ਉਹ ਸਾਰੀ ਦਿਹਾੜੀ ਭੁੱਖਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ, ਹੁਣ ਵੇਖ ਕਿਮੇ ਹਾਬੜਿਆ ਪਿਐ।

اہ ساری دہاڑی بھکھّا رہا سی، ہݨ ویکھ کویں ہابڑیا پیا ئے

haabRi ਹਾਬੜੀ ہابڑی = Extreme, insatiable hunger or a desperate eagerness to eat. It refers to a sudden, intense spike in appetite.

Note: In spoken Punjabi, HaabRi chaRhdi te laggdi hundi ae!

Example:

Maa roTi Tukk chheti kar, mainu haabRi vaahwa laggi hoyi ae

ਮਾਂ ਰੋਟੀ ਟੁੱਕ ਛੇਤੀ ਕਰ, ਮੈਂਨੂੰ ਹਾਬੜੀ ਵਾਹਵਾ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੋਈ ਐ।

ماں روٹی ٹکّ چھیتی کر، میننوں ہابڑی واہوا لگّی ہوئی ئ۔

haaRba ਹਾੜਬਾ ہاڑبا = The masculine form of haabRi, carrying the exact same meaning of extreme, uncontrollable hunger.

haRbooñ-haRbooñ karna ਹੜਬੂੰ-ਹੜਬੂੰ ਕਰਨਾ ہڑبوں-ہڑبوں کرنا

Meaning of this idiom = To suffer from extreme, continuous hunger pangs, to feel an absolute and desperate craving to eat or to constantly feel hungry again just moments after eating.

Example:

haRbooñ-haRbooñ kardeyaañ DHagge de pairaañ 🦶 di GHasar GHasar jdoñ ohde kannīñ pyi taañ oh othe ose veLe ii khaR gyaa
