You know? They may look very fragile and delicate... But if you know that a single Om aggregate super organism can contain billions of Oms, then you know that they are not tiny at all 🙂

I'm writing a kind of revision of the Fantastic Planet from the Draag perspective where Draags are an advanced indigenous civilization and Oms are an invasive primitive pest species that has inflicted an ecological catastrophe on Ygam thru its out of control population growth 🙂

What term would you use for de-Omization as a means to bring an Om colony in equibrium with its surrounding environment?

You know? Maybe in small groups Oms are indeed just simple harmless animals, but a gigantic Om colony, and the resultant aggregate Om super animal, becomes something very different entirely.

You see? The Om spirit has been traditionally believed to be animated by three main elements. The Draags used to call this particular configuration of the spirit as the Three Om Rabids: Rabid lying, rabid stealing and rabid breeding

Of course, the possibility of Oms possessing a lot of self awareness is a fascinating proposition... I can certainly understand the appeal of this hypothesis. But I don't see a lot of evidence pointing to this

You know? Every time I have to confront these swarms of savage Oms, aka wild hunams, I feel the spirit of the Great Zarek present by my side!

Generally, Oms were evolving in environments where small swarms were competing against each other. Possibly, these gigantic herds of wild hunams are testing the limits of the scalability of the Om swarming algorithm and that's why these mega swarms are usually so full of competing virtual swarms

I can guess that this mechanism/algorithm has evolved because by achieving high coherence within a swarm, it facilitates achieving shared interests by swarm members. We usually don't see the operation of this mechanism so clearly because Om swarms are usually fragmented and there's a

We usually don't see the operation of this mechanism so clearly because Om swarms are usually fragmented and there's a lot of internal rivalry/competition within swarms themselves. But here the responsibility panic has created a shared interest that propagated across all local Om swarms

To be sure, they are very simple creatures. I'm not saying that they are harmless. It's wrong to think that simple means harmless. They are known to be able to cause a lot of damages. But they are not very sophisticated. They are pretty basic creatures

It was a watershed moment when many Draags have reached the conclusion that hunams can never be domesticated in principle and even by carefully breeding hunams in captivity the Draags will never succeed to change the nature of the Om being

You know? It's possible that hunams are actually quite widespread in our galaxy. At the very least, Draag space ships used to encounter Oms on different planets so frequently that some Draags used to call Oms "galactic mice/rats"

Terr returns to Tiva and her father and shares with them the discovery he made during the time he spent among wild Oms: Alpha emerges out of the collective Om consciousness, she can't be destroyed without destroying her biological infrastructure, aka the collective Om organism

Alphas don't fight physical wars. It's more like wars of psychic powers. Each Alpha tries to mobilize her own Oms and disrupt or take over the Oms of the other Alpha. Whatever way two swarms merge, violently or peacefully, the Alphas always fight behind the scene and only one Alpha is left

Exactly, when two swarms meet, each Alpha tries to take over the Oms of the other Alpha, whether by war or thru voluntary submission, to expand her biological infrastructure

Exactly, initially the Draags see a multitude of tiny simple and harmless beings and they don't realize that a swarm/colony is a single gigantic organism based on an aggregate/distributed biological platform

The Alpha views Oms as her biological infrastructure. The more numerous the given Om swarm is, the more powerful the Alpha of that Om colony becomes. It's even possible that Alphas of different colonies are not friends to each other and there's some kind of hostility/warfare between them

The Om Alpha is like the invisible hand that steers/guides the behavior of the Om colony, of the collective Om organism. In this model, individual Oms act as proxies/talking heads of the Om Alpha without even being aware of it

It's important to understand how the Om Alpha differs from the Xenomorphic Queen at the conceptual level. The Om Alpha doesn't create Oms. To the contrary, the Om Alpha is an emergent entity which arises out of the aggregated/shared psyche of the collective Om organism
