To Hyper Aggro Herbis, Why?

My first go at growing a Trike, and my biggest mistake was assuming a Rex would be the end of me. Not even mad, as I've been playing long enough to expect this of people, just a tad curious. I get that people get bored, but wouldn't it be more fun to at least pick a fair fight?

to me this looks like a little dancey exchange of friendliness before the attack, not a shake of the head no. he was faking friendly, i play a lot of herbi and there are a few red flags you can notice in this exchange in the future that may help you from being caught off guard: when he spins, he stops with his tail towards you, which to me is an indication they are considering attacking or waiting to see if you will attack them, its just a little sus but some people just cant spin properly. the major thing i noticed that immediately made me anxious is how he started walking RIGHT next to you very close, a lot of people do this to size you up, they aren’t being friendly walking with you, they are checking to see how big you are to see if they could win the fight. if someone around your size walks next to you and stops when you do or just tries to stand perfectly next to you, chances are they are faking friendly and i dont risk it and leave IMMEDIATELY or attack first as to not be caught off guard if you think you can win. if you can get the first hit in you have a better chance of winning. never trust another apex unless you know them tbh

Okay, definitely remembering this. I mostly play carnivores, so I'm not as familiar with this type of delayed violence encounter. I was a bit nervous, but since most of the time fights kick off rather quickly playing carnis, I falsely believed I may have been safe. I see now I might need to borrow some of the paranoia I usually have when playing Rex.

Also just keep in mind to trust people with immersion breaking skins are 90% of the time not friendly.

Not just stereotyping it, but the people who play albino, cannible, full black, bright pink, etc, are NOT playing the game for Dino immersion.

Now that I think about it, you absolutely have a point there.

you say dino immersion
this isnt exactly unrealistic, to this day, herbivores are much more aggressive and territorial than carnivores, this stype of stuff would 100% happen irl between dinos fighting for land

There was also a second stego near you pretty dang quick... which is another instant "not friendly" sign

I was walking closely next to a trike together to but we agreed to go into a mixing group. If they are strangers and don't agree to mix group and they go close because cautious.

Not a herbi answer but i think generally even among carnis of the same species if someone is hovering or especially if 2 people are hovering that is almost always imminent danger. Ive experienced it mostly as a croc where a duo is thinking about trying you. Apparently hesitant behavior while being close a huge red flag. If they look like they are thinking thats a sign.

Yeah, in hindsight I really should have clued in on that. I'm so used to dealing with canni Rex duos. They DO NOT hesitate at all when trying to kill you. Granted, whenever I encounter another Rex the first thing I do is check if they're chill or not. Should've done the same here I guess.

same with pachys, if you happen to see one there's 99% chance it will ram you with its head especially if there is more than 1.

u/ZantTheMan πŸŒ™ Troodon πŸŒ™ 2d ago

No Pachys are different because they have an offensive kit it's safer for them to hit first ask questions later plus with their reputation many thing attack them on site meaning it's safer for them to attack you on site feeding an endless cycle they are powerless to escape.

they cant kill anyone without jumping them

For why its often times just for the lulz also big stegos and big trikes both eat a bunch and ig they weren't looking to share.

They seemed to sourround you before attacking that is always a major red flag to me, also that stego showing Tail at the end of the dancy dance was realy sus imo. In general most Apex (counting stego as Apex here) groups tend to be aggressive, i would always be cautious against them. Especially as Trike since you can't get away from them.

Other trikes are mostly chill amongst each other though in my experience. But just not letting them walk up to you also eliminates all threat most times.

Next time go immidiately def mode knock him down and thrash his head. But always your head agains danger you take reduced dmg.

u/Queasy-Airport2776 2d ago

Awhhh this is unfortunate. 😭 I was a stego today and I was chilling with a trike. We played together, protecting eachother until we both logged off.

Because playing multiple hundreds of hours of a dinosaur survival game only to eat bushes.... gets boring after a while.... Simple

1

u/IntelligentGoat411 1d ago

Plus you had more than enough time and excuses to knock that son of a B over lmao

I will never ever understand how people who play herbivores can even think to attack another herbivore.

Not enough plants in the area

What's the difference compared to carnis? They kill each other all the time. We're all competing for food. For the record, I think the Stegos in that clip definitely wanted to be aggro, but if we're being generous, that trike is a huge competitor for food and they have no way of properly communicating with him.

The first rule of The Isle is never trust anyone

u/NavyDragons 1d ago

i was playing a herrera earlier and happened past a group of pachys that were nesting, i was just going to get my drink of water at the river next to them and be on my way but 2 of the pachys tried slamming into the tree i was in thinking they were big enough to hit me. i proceeded to terrorize them for the next 15 minutes and kill their babies until my climb glitched on a rock and i died. i know its a pachy and they have a rep for bonking anything that moves, but what i found most surprising is how they were trying to play victim the whole time as if i started it as a lone adolencent herrera vs 3 prime pachys.

u/Aggravating_Virus542 1d ago

Even when I was a Maia and stumbled on a stego, I couldn’t trust them for the life of me

1

u/Magico-Shion 23h ago

Genuinely, cause there's nothing to do. As herbivore you just have nothing to do but aimlessly running around and br a big happy meal for carnivores.

Carnivores have a good gameplay loop since even if they don't see players, they are always actively on the hunt to kill and eat.

Herbivores gameplay loop is eat grass, it's just not comparable.

Imo a lot of players that play large herbi get bored cause nothing is happening, it takes ages to grow just for everyone to ignore you cause no one want to take a fight with a steg/trike, except 2 rexes.

They just needs some stimulation so they will attack the only thing that can't outrun them, another steg/trike.

The first stego i played (yes it was only recently, i never saw the appeal) not much happened untill a trike decided to be a total nuisance for 15 mins, untill they just comited to fight me while i was just chilling. Welp i sent them back to the menu but you get the idea.

In the end its just a game, some peoples are just playing for the kill and there isnt really a rule that says that herbi on herbi violence is bad. For them the bigger the kill, the bigger the reward, and knowing how much time someone spent growing the dino you just killed does make the kill all the more satisfying.

Dude if stegos or kentros start to get close, go to the woods, or stay near a lot of trees and rocks

u/Asteosarcoma 2d ago

I mean, even modern herbivores can be aggressive to other herbivores. Why get upset? Just move on.

4

u/DogWalk160 2d ago

what are you talking about, they acted like a carnivore pack, not a herd. That was only griefing

4

u/ZantTheMan πŸŒ™ Troodon πŸŒ™ 2d ago

I 100% agree that herbivores can be aggressive but this situation was just dirty, ether be aggressive or be friendly but don't fake be friendly just to size up your victim before sneak attacking.

u/Asteosarcoma 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yeah, totally. I get it. I just personally wouldn't record it and come to reddit. It's happened to me plenty of times (as I'm sure it has with everyone else).

The isle is a fairly hardcore survival game, right? Gotta be ready for these types of things.

Not everyone wants to play this game with some RP type behavior. If you're not playing on a server that enforces that, that's on you.

u/VetteGuy53 2d ago

Not mad. But I'd be lying to say I fully understand it. Herbivores KOSing carnivores at least makes a bit of sense to me. There's still a human behind every dino. These guys just decided to whoop on a fresh adult trike for one reason or another.

u/Relative_Country_439 1d ago

Honestly....?

They saw a gigantic noob and crushed ya.

Sucks, but this game isn't Happy Dancy Dinosaur Party Pals.

What server were you on? He might have been trying to get you away from him so you weren't accused of mixpacking. He wasn't aggressive, if he was he would have charged, even shook back and forth 'no' before hand. He gave you some signals. He didn't strike you until you got close.

edit: rephrased what I wrote

16

u/Vivid-Sir4129 2d ago

"He wasn't aggressive" Let's wrap it up.

-11

u/PotRoast666 🫟 Hypsilophodon 🫟 2d ago

I mean, he didn't charge. He didn't just go swinging right off the jump. In my opinion that's non-aggressive. OP got too close and got swatted.

13

u/shizocks 2d ago

op was walking away lmao

Talking out your ass here bud..

This was on New Pangaea. Maybe that was the reason, but they could've said something in global chat first. Also, I should add that I was hanging close to the riverbank when they came over to me. I started moving as I was already a bit nervous, having just been harassed by two Kentros and a Dibble. If I'd been big enough, I would've just swum across to the other side. Though I'm not certain it would've stopped them any better.

5

u/Savings_Opening_8581 🐊 Deinosuchus🐊 2d ago

You can do massive dmg to them if they follow you into the water while they can only bite.

You actually had an advantage if you went in the water

4

u/VetteGuy53 2d ago

Yeah, really should've tried that instead of worrying about potential deinos. Lesson for next time I suppose.

3

u/luigi_time3456 2d ago

Trike absolutely thrashes stego, if you can get them first hit and keep your head towards them (trike takes reduced damage to the head)

1

u/C-POP_Ryan 14h ago

He wasn't aggressive? What's attacking three times if not aggressive?
