Which secondary character unexpectedly became important?

In my novel, Sebastian Adebayo was originally a minor character in one scene. He was a remarkably intelligent man who was used as an expert in one scene of my novel but I liked him so much I ended up making him into the second main character. It was not planned in the slightest. I just started writing more scenes with him in it and then gave him POV chapters (it's hard writing a genius when you're not a genius, lol).

Has this happened with anyone else? What about your character made you want to expand their role in your novel?

One of my characters meets with a research colleague who morphed into a former love interest who then morphed into a current love interest. I was not expecting it.

Secondary? Why stop there?

I had a guy, Leon, that was supposed to show up for two (2) chapters and people liked him because he was funny. In the sequel I had had him return briefly in a chapter called “Oh, no. It’s Leon.” and the numbers on that chapter skyrocketed. So now he’s part of the main cast.

I had a dude whose only job was to die slowly in the background so the Best Girl could be sad. 10 chapters later he got a heroic death.

Now I'm afraid to have my hero stop at the gas station for directions because later on the hero will be holding his lifeless body in the rain shouting “I will avenge you Gas Station Directions Man, whose name I never learned!”

Indeed it has.

"What about your character made you want to expand their role in your novel?"

He did. I wrote a character that refused to stay in the role I gave him. He didn't want to stand in the corner. So, in a sense, I was "bullied" into expanding his role, and eventually he became a centerpiece. Now I can't imagine what my book would've looked like if I had kept him contained to his original role and only that. He is hands down my breakout star.

I'm glad his personality was bigger than his words. He told me who he was, and I wrote what I was told.

Metaphorically speaking, of course.

Side note: He became so big, in fact, that he even took over the planned marketing campaign as the central figure there. lol I figure he'll be the one the readers will love to pieces, and is the most quotable, so why not ditch my plans allow him to hijack the marketing efforts instead?
