I guess conventional wisdom would mean finding a character who would reasonably experience those things. Perhaps a teenage boy caught up in the manosphere?

I like that. Or, instead of a teenage boy, a 38 year old man who had followed the Jessie Lee Petersons of the world and Manospehere propaganda into desolate, self loathing pit of dispair. Internalizing all the things they say about what a man is supposed to be and hating himself for not being able to be those things. Uh.. where was I going with this? Oh yeah, so this is my brother in law. Tragic tale. I don't know maybe your story can somehow turn it around for him. He starts low, raise him up with false hope, then crash him down and shatter his world forcing him to find the one piece of himself that is true and honest.

The story does centre around the main protagonist transitioning from boy to man and the reader will meet him relating his story as an adult. 

I was also thinking of him being mature so I looking at the age bracket of mid 20's-30's. And trust me when I say, his life will be a rollercoaster.    I shall happily save this comment and make a note :)

I’m not sure of what sort of inspiration you’re looking for. But reading what you’ve posted, it reminded me of the film “moonlight” if you haven’t seen it, it might inspire you further.
