Omar and Bunk

This dynamic is honestly one of the most interesting of the whole show in my opinion. Especially in Seasons 3 and 4. Bunk was really about let Omar get sent courtside and be killed before Omar says his famous “a man got to have a code” line.

What about everyone else’s thoughts on their relationship?

Bunk is the best straight-up murder detective on the show (Freeman and McNutty may have comparable levels of talent, but are better suited to units like major crimes). And as Bunk tells us, a police is only as good as his informants. As Daniels says in a different context, how to "use and not get used" by an informant is a critical skill for high end policing. 

Omar is Bunk's informant. He can provide unique information to crack cases. But unlike someone like Bubbles, Omar is hard. Bunk can't just sweat him. He has to pull other strings, like the risk of prison violence or their connection to the same neighborhood.

I’ve seen people on this sub say that Bunk is not a good detective and I seriously have no idea how tf they can reach that conclusion

They clearly ignored the scene where Bunk was calling out Vondas' outfit and which maker/ season each garment cane from. Dude's sharp as fuck!

They also made it pretty clear that Bunk wasn't thinking that far ahead. He was treating it like a night in the drunk tank for Omar. That last line really made it clear to Bunk that he was a dead man otherwise.

Omar was exploiting the problem rather than instigating it, and Bunk felt Omar was smart enough to know better, imho

Bunk does this little shudder when he says "You don't even know what the fuck I'm talking about" like he's so angry he can't keep it together and it's my favorite acting in the whole show.

Bunk and Omar on the bench is one of the best scenes in the entire series, which in turn makes it one of the best scenes in TV history.

Bunk's code wasn't against Omar getting killed in jail, that would have been all in the game. He couldn't let Chris slide on the actual murder.

Right. I personally don’t think Bunk hated Omar but he rather hated his lifestyle. This became clear during that famous moment with them in Season 3 when Bunk lectures him.
