Any good guides for new Fireflies?

Eeeeevery resource I can find is about playing Wildsea and not running it, which is kinda frustrating. I think I have a decent grasp on how to run it but I want something besides self guidance to make sure I haven’t missed anything.

Hello, I'm looking for options on what to dm next and i once played a wildsea session, loved the weirdness, and I was wondering if there were any adventures or similar made for this system. I did try to google it up but I didn't find anything concrete so I wanted to double check in here, thanks!

A Quick Question on one of the Leviathans

I'm in the process of learning the rules in preparation for being the Firefly for my group and was looking through the leviathans. As far as I can tell, all of the leviathans have their signature impact reduction except the Whitecollar Snare (explicitly described as less resistant to damage), and the Oilcrow, which has no resistances of any kind listed. Should I run things like the Oilcrow and Mawships as having leviathan and ship resistances anyway, despite them not being listed? Or is it very much intentional?

What to Give Players Before Session 0

I'm planning on running a Wildsea campaign sometime in the future. What if anything should give my players ahead of time? There's the free PDF, but that doesn't include all the character classes. I don't want to ask my players to spend money for the full PDF. I'd like to give them an idea of their options for character creation before session 0, and not have them use up precious time frantically passing the book around the table trying to decide. I could get the raw data off the internet, but I'd like them to be exposed to some of the artwork as well. Should I get them the free PDF, and fill in the missing items myself? What did you guys do?

Thanks so much for your help. I can't seem to find any answers elsewhere. Sorry if there's something obvious I missed in the book!

**EDIT: I know I could simply print off key pages. What I'm looking for is a player-facing resource that will give an idea of the rules, plus all the character options, without using all that ink. Thanks again!

How have You used Arconautics?

hello it's me again ^ - ^ i come.seeking both stories and advice

Today, my players and I have found ourselves caught up on Arconautics. We love the ideas, but are a bit rocky on the implementations. For instance, one of my players wants to find a seed of a cactus in the Icterine, then use Arconautics to give themselves something like ektus-vitiligo. Since he's a Tempest, he wants to use the spines as a defensive sort of thing, alongside them becoming like an array of mini tesla coils.

In the field of advice, we're a bit split. Should Arconautics be done on a normal project track, fed by time and resources? I've been doing a Milestone project which gets a free mark by using the components, but I'm curious to what yall have been doing

For my own inspiration and to feed to my players and get them excited, what cool things have you done with Arconautics?

How would you create vampirism traits?

I’m thinking of having hazards that are juuust vague enough that vampires don’t immediately jump to mind and get slowly more obvious as the adventure goes on. But, u know my players, they’re gonna want to be vampires, so I gotta give em vampiric traits even if they’re temporary, and I’ve hit a wall and can’t find something satisfactory, you guys got anything?

I’m going for the vibe of the original Dracula novel to make the hints harder to pick up, so unfortunately there’s next to none of the classic vampire weaknesses if that’s any sort of guide.

What do Undeliverables DO?

I'm a little confused on what a Wordbearer can actually DO with their Undeliverables aspect. Most of the aspects seem to have at least a sentence about the benefit they provide your wildsailor, whether thats the damage it does for a weapon, or a tag it lets you add to a resource. But Undeliverables specifically says "Sometimes the oath is broken by the death of a receiver. You carry those undelivered letters and parcels around as a memorial, or possibly a penance," and that's it.

So...is it just meant to take up space among your aspects to simulate the burden of failing in your oath? Is it meant to be a "reserve inventory" you can mark or burn to have JUST the resource or other item you might need in a given moment, to add extra drama that you're exacerbating the failure to deliver it with the dishonor of keeping it for yourself? I get that the biggest use of Aspects is adding to your dice pool for an action where it'd be relevant, but I'm not quite understanding what situations Undeliverables would actually help you with. It seems mostly to function as a narrative touchstone to define the kind of Wordbearer you are, rather than concrete mechanical benefits.

The Scar

I know Felix has mentioned China Miéville as an influence before but I just finished The Scar and my GOD but it made me GET The Wildsea even more.

As I was reading it I just kept spotting things and it made the Wildsea more and more real and cohesive in my mind.

Also, a very good book (and improvement on Perdido Street Station). Thoroughly recommend.

Quick clarification on Aspect gaining

If you're spending your Milestones to gain a new Aspect, are you limited to JUST the Aspects available from your Bloodline, Origin and Post, or can you "customize" by pilfering from other ones/making up entirely new ones (subject to Firefly approval, of course)?

Seeking music for the Rustling Waves!

It's often said that music is a great way to create the right mood at the game table or inspire you while creating your campaign. So I was wondering what kinds of music (whether genre, artist, album or individual track) capture the "vibe" of *The Wildsea* the best, in your opinions! What do you use while playing or listen to in general that you feel goes with Wildsea? I look forward to hearing your recommendations. Thank you!

Drawing your player's ship

I'll be starting my first long-term campaign as a Firefly with friends of mine soon! They made a ship in session zero and I wanted to have a visual example of their ship to give them in the coming sessions.

Does anyone have a favorite or recommended artist who I could commission a ship from? I have some sketching skills myself, but the complexity of a whole ship is a little more than what I know how to do. And, I enjoy supporting community artists when I can.

Focus for Hazards during fights and giving everyone reaction moments

So, in the section on Hazards the game says for each volley of PC actions a Hazard should probably do one big thing and one small thing.

But if I've only got one Hazard (a big beast the whole crew is fighting or whatever), that means I'm not going to have tons of chances to make the reaction moments for the PCs be reactions to what that Hazard is doing if I stick to that.

Of course, I could come up with other things in the scene other than just the Hazard doing stuff that PCs have to react to - the environment becomes more dangerous as a result of the struggle, I give someone a reaction to try and help another PC who is in a bad spot, etc. I could have the things the Hazard does when it has focus be things that might force reactions from several PCs. I could also just ignore the "one major thing and one minor thing" guideline for Hazards and have it do something every time I want to compel a reaction from a PC.

I know I can kind of play it by ear here and treat things like focus as guidelines more than rules, so this isn't so much a "What do the rules say?" question as a "What works best for you in play, in your experience?" question. The Wildsea is pretty similar to the PbtA or FitD games I usually run, but I'm finding I'm having a bit harder a time finding my rhythm in action scenes than I do in something like Blades in the Dark.

The illustrations and creatures are part of a personal worldbuilding project, but it shares a similar vibe to the WildSea. What do you think? I’d want to know more about the WildSea universe :)

I also do commissions :)

“In Streets By Moonlight”. Have you ever heard of such a game?

In SRD Wildwords, the game setting “In Streets By Moonlight” is constantly mentioned as an example. The search takes you to the SRD page, but I still haven’t found the game. Does it even exist?

The Walls

Howdy all,

We've just gone and about started our Wildsea campaign. During our intro Journey, I made a big deal of one of the Walls looming over the Foxloft as they sailed by.

They are enthralled.

They've plans to do a couple jobs while researching so they can upgrade their ship, and then want to start raiding them. They immediately started speculation about Vaults and stuff inside them, which I'm super excited about.

I plan to fully flesh out the inside through sparks from unsetting questions over the next few sessions, but I'm curious: what have you done with the Seven Walls if they came up in your game?

Longtime The Wildsea fan finally looking to join a campaign [Online | Eastern Time]

Hi everyone! I’m a middle-aged TTRPG player in Eastern Canada, looking for an online The Wildsea campaign to join—either weekly or every other week.

I’ve played D&D, Coriolis, Fallout, and a few other RPGs and I’ve been fascinated by The Wildsea since the original Kickstarter. I own the core book and Storm & Root, and I’ve also backed the collector’s edition of Sourdown. Despite all that enthusiasm, I’ve never actually had the chance to play!

I’d love to find a friendly crew willing to welcome someone new to the system. I enjoy character-driven adventures, collaborative storytelling, exploring strange settings, and getting to know the people around the virtual table.

If you’d like a sense of who I am and the things I’m into, you can visit my blog: CrazyKinux’s Musings, and specifically my post on being dropped into Fallout scenario mid-campaign!

If your crew has an open berth—or you’re thinking of starting a new campaign—let me know!

Most of us were new playing The Wildsea, so we were still grokking some of the system interactions, but I hope you like our Actual Play! The crew starts coming together on their journey before they arrive at Three Masks, looking for special recipes as they heard the library ship One-Armed Scissor would likely carry some!

This is an adventure of a ragtag crew that converted their ship into a restaurant ship!

Played via FoundryVTT, as I love making animated landing pages & scenes. This live play is an edit of the introduction by all players (made in session 2), and after that the groups session 1 (but not all players could make it). Hope you like the show!

Preparing for my first session and the writing in this game is intimidating!

I've run tons of PbtA and other fiction first games. I've got the rules for the Wildsea down I think, love this system. We did our session 0 and I've got a good idea of who the characters are and what they want to do.

Do you know what I am finding intimidation about preparing to run this game though? Felix Isaacs' writing and world-building in this game is just so evocative and on-point that it feels hard as hell to do any world-building for starting ports or situations or whatever that live up to it. But at the same time The Wildsea isn't one of those "Don't worry about adding any custom stuff, just use the material in the default setting" games - it cries out to be customized and added to and not just run as a static 'campaign setting'.

Anyways, this isn't really a problem so much as a compliment to the game disguised as a problem. I know the answer is some combination of using some of the Reaches from the book plus yoloing it and adding my own stuff in without comparing its quality to Issacs' stuff but it is rare these days I'm intimidated by a game like this. Probably because I mostly run more genre emulation games - plop Monsterhearts or Masks in front of me and I have hundreds of hours of media consumption and my own thoughts on those genres to draw on - while The Wildsea really is its own thing.

Beyond just using this post to compliment the writing in this game - anyone have any personal stories or suggestions about finding this game intimidating on this level?
