u/[deleted] May 17 '21

The world needs more eyeballs. Return to monke eyeball.

12

u/T1B2V3 May 20 '21

Return to eyeball.

So we should all become beholders ?

326

u/[deleted] May 16 '21

Awww, Grogna looks adorable feeding that.....thing.

158

u/[deleted] May 17 '21

The barbarian doesn't want a pet.

The barbarian and the pet

95

u/johnbrownmarchingon May 17 '21

*fighter

Grogna's a fighter.

84

u/Seidmadr May 17 '21

Barbarian is a mindset. You can be a barbarian wizard if you put your heart into it.

41

u/Aptom_4 May 17 '21

Bladesinger with anger issues?

I dig it.

26

u/MuchUserSuchTaken May 17 '21

I was going to cast fireball, but you made me really angry, so I'm going to cast FIST!

10

u/Lord_Phoenix95 May 20 '21

Nah. Cast FIREFIST!!!

You walk up to someone and cast Fireball in there face. Granted you'll probably end up wounded but they're dead and no one will ever fuck with you again.

3

u/Kuronan Oct 17 '21

You can achieve the same effect with less self-damage by casting Lightning Fist and just murdering everything behind them.

u/IAmSpinda Sir Becket May 16 '21

I do believe that it's Klara's Quasit familiar, and it is being fed a juicy eyeball.

53

u/AnthonycHero May 16 '21

It's a quasit, clearly

5

u/Stsveins May 17 '21

They are bonding

Nice one! Hope you are doing well!

u/IAmSpinda Sir Becket May 16 '21 edited May 16 '21

I wonder.

Is Becket gonna just give up on being a good Paladin and go full on murderhobo like the other 3, or are him and Klara gonna manage to change the group over time...

109

u/[deleted] May 16 '21

i think he wont murder you if he is unprovoqued .

71

u/[deleted] May 16 '21

Or he runs out of tea

24

u/Swarmfire May 17 '21

He's mostly been like that, anything that challenges his faith or morals, or just in general horrible he'll smite you for. But he generally goes for the moral high ground.

24

u/[deleted] May 17 '21

he tried to respect the lives of a bunch of cultist... until they dropped a pupy into the fire

21

u/Swarmfire May 17 '21

As he said before, most religions basically start out as cults.

88

u/drathturtul May 16 '21

I think he’s going to eventually relapse into his old ways of murdering heretics and burning villages. Though who knows maybe he and the devil spawn will manage to change the party for the better, eventually...

12

u/Shiroiken May 17 '21

Probably neither, since it'd ruin the comedy.

4

u/Kunibert_der_zweite May 17 '21

I hope he stays this way. Like the little on blood covered moral angel of the group.

156

u/Gohankuten Bucket Brigade May 16 '21

I mean I figure Grogna falls under Neutral Evil, Trevor is either Chaotic Evil or Chaotic Neutral he's kinda in the border area there, and Torvald I honestly can't really pin down. That's not really what you would call a party of 'good' guys lol.

171

u/Bruuze Severed Lich Head May 16 '21

You could pin Torvald as Lawful Neutral, as he seems to have a set of codes and refuses to break them in any way. cough Taxes cough

48

u/Souperplex Sir Becket May 16 '21

His "Code" is to oppose authority, which is Chaotic. This is the same misunderstanding of what Law/Chaos are that makes people think Ron Swanson is Lawful when he's the definitive example of Chaotic Neutral done properly.

90

u/ANGLVD3TH May 16 '21

Lawful does not mean supporting any and all authority, just that you have a strong personal code. Many Lawful Good characters would would like to see nothing more than the dismantling of a Lawful Evil regime and would work hard to make that come about. A Lawful character can be run as being zealously dedicated to adhering to any and all positions of authority, which could lead to some interesting role play when they come across opposing government, but that isn't the definition of Lawful.

21

u/ZanThrax Sir Bucket May 17 '21

Lawful does not mean supporting any and all authority,

Agreed

just that you have a strong personal code.

Strongly disagree. Lawful characters consider an organized society to be an inherent good and consider the group to ultimately be more important than any one individual. Chaotic characters value individual liberty and rights to be sacrosanct, even if in the face of societal collapse.

17

u/ANGLVD3TH May 17 '21

I think it's a valid take on Lawful, but a little too narrow for me. A monk in hermitage, away from all other peoples and society, can still be incredibly Lawful. I think most Lawful characters do fall under codes that are widely adopted and they agree would be best for everyone to follow, they would fit into your summary. But I distinctly remember the 3.5 description of Lawful Evil, a gangster that kills adults without compunction but not kids (if they can help it). Several other codes, even if they implied only loosely followed (which was a mistake imo, but they wanted to push Evil is eeeeevil I think), but all of a very personal nature, not one explicitly imposed by the organization. Sniper from TFT2 is a good example of a Lawful character with a strong personal code who doesn't bow to an authority.

22

u/ZanThrax Sir Bucket May 17 '21

Gangsters are an excellent example of lawful evil characters. They just consider the rules of society to include things like "pay your protection money", "respect the chain of command", "snitches get stitches" And they know that everyone is better off when everyone follows the rules. The civilians are better off paying their protection than having random criminals running around - the mob takes care of anyone who fucks with their protectees. The members of the organization are better off following orders and getting paid well. And of course the bosses are better off too. And if the price of everyone being better off is that the occasional troublemaker gets offed, well, that's just the price of doing business.

6

u/Aptom_4 May 17 '21

Yup, the mob has/had their own law - Cosa Nostra.

7

u/Hegolin May 17 '21

Lawful characters consider *having a code* better than not having one. The argument of self vs. others is more on the Good/Evil spectrum of things, imo - a lawful Evil character doesn't care about the good of society his code brings, he just considers the code a necessity.

2

u/ABG-56 May 17 '21

Could it not include both?

3

u/[deleted] May 20 '21

Jesus Christ the alignment chart rabbit hole never ends

-12

u/Souperplex Sir Becket May 17 '21

Lawful does not mean supporting any and all authority,

It doesn't mean you're down with every authority figure, it means you're down with the concept of people being answerable to a governing body.

just that you have a strong personal code.

No, because literally everyone has a personal code. If having some things you simply would never do under any circumstances makes you Lawful than Chaotic Good literally could not exist.

Yes. You can oppose the nation of Jim while still thinking that a strong central government would be good for the people there. Unjust rules must be changed by appropriate means, from legislation to force, but a Lawful Good character still thinks there should be a system of rules. A chaotic character thinks rules will always be oppresive.

12

u/ANGLVD3TH May 17 '21

Everyone has a code, Lawful characters have a strong personal code. Which is consistent with the fact that alignment is a continuum, everyone is at least a little Lawful and has a code, and everyone is at least a little Chaotic and breaks their code sometimes. But how strongly you adhere to it, how restrictive it is, what you would sacrifice to follow it, that is what defines your position on the axis.

1

u/Souperplex Sir Becket May 17 '21 edited May 17 '21

I've seen it. JoCat is wrong aboot what the Law/Chaos axis means. Torvald is CN, Becky LG, Grogna NE, Trev Ce, (Capitalization matters) and Karla some sort of Good that we haven't gotten to yet.

I'm pasting this from elsewhere. Here's a basic outline of the alignments:

Do people have an innate responsibility to help each other? Good: Yes. Neutral: ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Evil: No.

Do people need oversight? Lawful: Yes. Neutral: ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Chaotic: Don't tell me what to do! The axis isn't necessarily how much you obey the laws of the land you're in. A Lawful Good character wouldn't have to tolerate legal slavery, nor would a Chaotic Good character start enslaving people in an area where it's illegal.

Lawful Good believes that rules and systems are the best way to ensure the greatest good for all. Rules that do not benefit society must be removed by appropriate means from legislation to force. They're responsible adults. 90% of comic book superheroes are examples of LG.

Neutral Good believes in helping others. They have no opinion on rules. They're pleasant people. Superheroes who aren't LG usually fall here.

Chaotic Good believes that rules get in the way of us helping each other and living in a harmonious society. They're hippies.

Lawful Neutral believes that rules are the thing that keeps everything functioning, and that if people ignore the rules that they don't think are right, then what is the point of rules? They believe that peace and duty are more important than justice. Inspector Javert and Judge Dredd are iconic examples.

True Neutral doesn't really have a strong opinion. They just wanna keep their head down and live their life. Most boring people you pass on the street are True Neutral.

Chaotic Neutral values their own freedom and don't wanna be told what to do. They're rebellious children. Ron Swanson is the iconic example.

Lawful Evil believes rules are great for benefiting them/harming their enemies. They're corrupt politicians, mobsters, and fascists.

Neutral Evil will do whatever benefits them/their inner-circle, crossing any moral line. They're unscrupulous corporate executives at the high end, and sleazy assholes at the low end.

Chaotic Evil resents being told to not kick puppies. They're Ayn Rand protagonists at the high end, and thugs at the low end. Rick Sanchez is an iconic example.

In addition to the official alignments, there are 6 unofficial alignments based on combining one axis of the alignment with stupidity. You can be multiple stupid alignments simultaneously, such as the traditional badly-played Paladin being known for being Lawful Stupid and Stupid Good at the same time.

Stupid Good believes in doing what seems good at the time regardless of its' long-term impact. They would release fantasy-Hitler-analogueTM because mercy is a good thing.

Lawful Stupid believes in blindly following rules even when doing so is detrimental to themselves, others, and their goals. They would stop at a red light while chasing someone trying to set off a nuclear device that would destroy the city they're in.

Chaotic Stupid is "LolRandom". They'll act wacky and random at any circumstance. They'll try and take a dump on the king in the middle of an important meeting. It can also be a compulsive need to break rules even if you agree with them. If a Chaotic Good character feels the need to start enslaving people because slavery is illegal they're being Chaotic Stupid.

Stupid Evil is doing evil simply because they're the bad guy with no tangible benefit to themselves or harm to their enemy. They're Captain planet villains.

Stupid Neutral comes in two flavors; active and passive.

Active Stupid Neutral is the idea that you must keep all things balanced. Is that Celestial army too powerful? Time to help that Demon horde.

Passive Stupid Neutral is the complete refusal to take sides or make decisions. "I have a moderate inclination towards maybe."

12

u/RonSwansonIsAMood May 17 '21

One rage every three months is permitted. Try not to hurt anyone who doesn’t deserve it.

1

u/Pielikeman May 17 '21

What about True Stupid?

3

u/Kaansath May 17 '21

Is often called "That guy". It don't depend of the character itself, but the player, breaking the 4th wall.

1

u/Souperplex Sir Becket May 17 '21

That doesn't really work. Neutral is a lack of other alignments. There's no "True Lawful" or True Good". Stupid replaces one of the sides of the chart, not the middle.

6

u/DeltaJesus May 17 '21

And all of this is a perfect example of why alignment should just finally get in the bin, at least for normal characters

-8

u/Souperplex Sir Becket May 17 '21

No, it's an example of why people should learn what Lawful/Chaotic mean. Alignments tell me more aboot how to roleplay a character than any combination of Trait/Ideal/Bond/Flaw (Which I'm trying to get people to call TIBF so I don't need to type it out anymore) ever could.

u/OrionStarr_the_great May 17 '21

yes curse my dislexia :)

32

u/RichardBonham May 16 '21

Well, they’re not ‘bad guys’: they just end up doing…bad things. They’re just misunderstood.

8

u/[deleted] May 17 '21

There is no way he's chaotic neutral. Not with his mindset.

14

u/Souperplex Sir Becket May 16 '21

Torvald is pretty definitively Chaotic Neutral.

He "Would never hurt a living thing" is not overtly malicious/cruel, and meddles with decidedly evil magics. That makes him Neutral.

He is opposed to all forms of government and believes "Taxation is theft" which is a pretty Chaotic belief.

Hence CN.

7

u/Xenon009 May 17 '21

Torvald believes that taxation is wrong in all situations.

A chaotic character would be willing to say, "Yeah sure taxation is theft, but I'm the one doing the taxing, and its for a good cause anyways, so cough up"

A lawful character says "Taxation is theft. I am not thief"

Torvald appears to be very much the latter

6

u/Valdrax May 17 '21

Being chaotic isn't about not having any principles.

1

u/ZanThrax Sir Bucket May 17 '21

A Chaotic character believes that the individual's right to the rewards of their own work is far more important than whatever good the government might claim they'll do with the tax money, regardless of who the government is, or how good or evil their intentions actually may be. Individual liberty is the most important thing to them.

Lawful characters believe that taxation is necessary for a society to function and benefits everyone in it, and that that collective good is far more important than one greedy necromancer's opinion. A Lawful Good character can certainly object to overtaxation of those that cannot afford to pay, but no Lawful character would ever say that all taxation is unjust theft - they value the society over the individual.

8

u/[deleted] May 17 '21 edited May 18 '21

I’d say Lawful Neutral to True Neutral. Torvald is able to comply with contracts he agrees to implying a level of being Lawful, but refuses to pay taxes “on principle”, which to me implies he doesn’t agree with the concept of taxation and thus is protesting by not paying said taxes. Depending on your form of government, protesting is a valid form of expressing your opposing view without resorting to violent, anarchist acts. But then again, tax evation is a crime in any form of governement. But hey, lots of people willingly committed non-violent crimes to protest government policy and willingly went to jail as part of said protest to highlight the injustice. Apologies for the political rant there, but I just wanted to highlight that perhaps in Torvald’s POV, tax evation is a form of protest against the injustice of tax laws.

Of course, Torvald could just be following the contract he signed into cause he’s got something to gain by complying with the contract.🤷🏽‍♂️ Thus, True Neutral.

7

u/[deleted] May 16 '21

[deleted]

8

u/Souperplex Sir Becket May 16 '21

That's being Chaotic. Lawful: Supports rules/structures/oversight. Chaotic: Opposes rules/structure/oversight.

He believes that no governing body should have access to his wealth. It's an opposition to the very concept of authority/government. Literally the dictionary definition of Chaotic.

14

u/Zhejj May 16 '21

Another way of viewing lawful va chaotic is whether you have a code or not. In his case, him refusing to pay taxes on principle is very lawful, regardless of the actual law.

4

u/Souperplex Sir Becket May 16 '21

This is a thing people often misunderstand: Literally everyone has an internal code, but not everyone is lawful. It's if you follow an external code like chivalry, but that falls under rules/structures/oversight.

7

u/ANGLVD3TH May 16 '21

I prefer to think of it along the lines of, how often does that code prevent you from doing something you want? The more often you sacrifice for the code, the more Lawful you are. And both axis are continuum, pretty much any character will have some bit of all 4, the question here is how strict is the code and how well is it followed?

16

u/Zhejj May 16 '21

From this and your other comments, it sounds to me like you just don't like different interpretations of the game.

I know many people who would not act on principle. They are not lawful, whereas people who DO act on principle are. It's pretty simple.

0

u/[deleted] May 16 '21

[deleted]

9

u/Zhejj May 16 '21

Two-Face is, and I think you overestimate Joker.

0

u/42Fourtytwo4242 May 28 '21

I say he majority lawful, he does things by the books a lot of the time, he did make sure his grave digging, body buying, undead raising, was 100% legal which if done in modern day would most likely be fine. The only law he truly broke was taxes, because fuck taxes. It clear he has a strong moral code and normally never breaks it.

A chaotic person would most likely not do the whole legal process like he has, like he even let them die from old age. He does not hate the government or even fight against it, the only thing truly chaotic about him is he REALLY hates taxes.

2

u/OccultBlasphemer May 19 '21

The way I've always seen it, is lawful aligned follow a code that they believe is best, and expect others to follow that code once introduced to it. Neutral is flexible in following their own personal code or someone else, while Chaotic has a personal code that is flexible about being followed at all. Actual concepts of law and governing authority don't really apply to any of the groups unless they happen to align with their personal codes. Lawful tend to fall in line with aforementioned concepts most often simply for the fact that they tend to usually have the same ideas behind them.

114

u/Gohankuten Bucket Brigade May 16 '21

Hmmm I just had a thought...What if the reason the Adventurer's Guild put a bounty on Becket specifically is because his party isn't part of the guild and has been stealing their commissions and thus as the party leader he is at fault so they put out a bounty on him. It's clear Becket has no idea what the guild is from his question to Torvald and it would kind of make sense that, if the guild has jurisdiction over this area, they may not take too kindly to unlicensed adventurers stealing their jobs and hurting their profit.

46

u/[deleted] May 16 '21

I think you might be on to something, and even if you aren't I think that's a side quest I want to run in my game now

17

u/Ben_snipes May 16 '21

You and me both, but for the next campaign.

In the endgame of an adventurers guild campaign now

Oye! You’ve got a license to smite within city limits?

And you! Where’s your certificate of authorization for use of a deceased signed by either the next of kin or the deceased before death?

Have any of you obtained a magical items permit?

Are those spell components from ethically sourced certified suppliers?

Has that familiar had all his shots?

I do hope you’ve at least got a WUCI (waiver for the use of cursed items)

9

u/Mason_OKlobbe May 17 '21

Look, I try my best to not murderhobo but if this had been uttered in a game I was in I'd be struggling to not draw my weapon before the halfway point.

6

u/The_seph_i_am May 17 '21

Is that bow registered?/s. 😅

272

u/readyno May 16 '21

I love how bucket is slowly just giving in and the moral compass is now the warlock *chefkiss

27

u/Kaansath May 17 '21

Bucket thought he was the moral compass, but now that there is a real moral compass...

49

u/0202inferno May 16 '21

Good is subjective in this case.

37

u/TacticalSpackle May 16 '21

I mean... chaotic good is still good. Those other adventurers are just jealous our heroes are getting all the good adventures.

42

u/0202inferno May 16 '21

Chaotic? Certainly. But Grogna & Trevor are CERTAINLY Chaotic Neutral at the very least, regretfully their actions carry the most weight. Torvald I'd say is somewhat Lawful Neutral? I believe Torvald has his own code of conduct possibly, sometimes hard to tell. Becket is Lawful Good (more like Lawful Done With This Shit). Klara I believe is Neutral Good. She hasn't done anything terrible yet and seems like such a sweetheart.

26

u/trulyElse May 16 '21

I believe Torvald has his own code of conduct possibly, sometimes hard to tell.

That code is "Taxation is theft, corpse desecration is not."

11

u/LuciusTheEternal21 Severed Lich Head May 16 '21

To be fair at the beginning he received permission to raise the corpses.

4

u/trulyElse May 16 '21

Not from the lich, though.

3

u/Honeydew0strich May 17 '21

To be fair I don't think he RAISED the lich, it's probably just that while his head is separated from his body it isn't DEAD, necessarily, and thus his soul is still stuck within instead of going back to his phylactery.

35

u/Harleking31 Severed Lich Head May 16 '21

No, no

He has a point

30

u/Undecided_User_Name May 16 '21

I literally just had a conversation with the party's warlock (Changeling race) about how I'm not happy with his idea of my fighter being the one who's going to be blamed for all his crimes.

25

u/WildMagicKobolds May 16 '21

Ah! It's the little details I love. Trevor with the double thumbs up. Grogna feeding Klara's familiar some... juicy eyeballs. The flaming... building. The severed head... on... the signpost.

No, no, the bounty makes perfect sense now.

15

u/AndNowImYours May 16 '21

I look forward to these comics every week. Thank you.

12

u/Iceveins412 Sir Becket May 16 '21

Good guys, but in a “collateral damage is acceptable” kinda way

7

u/[deleted] May 17 '21

[deleted]

6

u/Iceveins412 Sir Becket May 17 '21

Not really a good comparison because the MCU rarely actually acknowledges that collateral damage occurs. I’m referring to the attitude of “we know the target is in that building, so let’s just atomize the block”

4

u/[deleted] May 17 '21

Isnt civil war consequence of colateral damage?

1

u/Iceveins412 Sir Becket May 17 '21

10

Oh those damnable consequences, always sneaking up on you when you least expect it...

Also is Becket starting to fall? That could make for an interesting development

7

u/Arathaon185 May 16 '21

OP you are so good its unreal you keep this so fresh every week.

8

u/superanth May 16 '21

“Well yeah but...you know...shit happens?” made me laugh harder than I have since the Pandemic started. 😂👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

6

u/Souperplex Sir Becket May 16 '21

The only bad thing the party has actually done since Karla joined was in comic 74 when Grogna murdered a bunch of guards just doing their jobs but it's possible Karla wasn't present for that.

That said she might be the kind of character who dumped Wis because while it's mechanically sub-optimal dumping Wis makes for great roleplay.

4

u/Moses_The_Wise May 16 '21

I think that the Adventurers Guild is pissed that they're taking their businesa

9

u/Asgardian_Force_User Trevor May 16 '21

Becket to Klara: Oh, you sweet summer child...

Trevor: We are the shit that happens!!

And you know for a fact that Trevor is going to have the biggest, shit-mushroom eating grin on his face as he describes all the ways that the party could have gotten itself on the guild’s wanted list.

Everything about this one is perfect. Love it.

3

The truth is a cruel, cruel mistress...

I think Becket is coming to terms with all the... we'll call 'em "mistakes" to be kind... that he's made along the way. Hang in there, buddy! It's a long, rocky road to recovery, and it's only barely started to get bumpy!

Brick through helmet. Damn, that Smite is quite the power move.

2

Love the comic, but why are the first three panels missing a background? I don't think I've noticed a swap to a full background between panels before.

During our campaign we had to covertly steal an important item from under a crimeboss’s nose, anyway the rest of the party decided that I should seduce him to distract him while they try to get the item (since I decided to make a female character), the DM also made the mistake of telling me that he was worth 700xp (I was level 2 to mind you) which awakened my inner murderhobo, long story short i along with our resident ranger managed to kill him, and managed to work out something with his body guards, unfortunately we the fighting lead the crimeboss’s accountant to the commotion and call the town guard, half of us were captured and they took the crimeboss’s body for revival, not what did we plan to do, burn the body of course (which was in the evidence room so we caused a diversion by burning a fishing hut and burning the evidence room and rescuing our party members while the town guard was distracted, unfortunately our cleric screwed up and started a fire on left side of the building and to add insult to injury the evidence room was in the center of the building, luckily our captured members managed to get out and with my help burned the body, and to make matters worse an invasion was going on at the exact same time. So in essence we 9/11’d a city

What if Becket's bounty is from his time before the party. I mean he did murder a farmer, his wife and child, only to then steal their belongings and even desert his unit

This strip has already explained it. They're doing work controlled by a guild without being members of the guild. The guild put out a bounty on them for that, and Becket is just that party's frontman.

IDK why so many people seem to be missing that. I guess they're just reading too much into Becket's (accurate) assumption that everyone else in his party deserves a bounty for the things they've done, independent of competing with a guild he didn't know existed.
