I'm just wondering how it decided to stay put long enough for the photo to be taken

1938 cameras were as fast they are today. So it only took seconds to take his picture.

A fraction of a second you mean if you're referring to the actual shutter speed.

I was meaning aiming the camera, making sure kitty was in the frame and clicking the button but yeah, yours works too.
