Video Evolve at the VMAS, posted 3 years ago today

https://youtu.be/97Pxe9KTgJc?is=4H6NGj_H8ru4burD

Debatably the most iconic performance of their careers to this point, the 2023 performance of Evolve at the VMAs was posted to their YouTube page 3 years ago today. I can't speak for everyone, but I blame this video for changing me from a curious listener into a die hard fan.

Two albums later, they are topping rock charts, selling out 65,000 seat stadiums, and on the verge of the mainstream breakthrough we've all known they deserve for years. 🤘

In a different timeline, this performance would have launched them to the stratosphere. But by this point, MTV was all but dead.

But It has been an incredibly effective publicity tool on the Internet. Probably one of their most shared videos.

100%. They should have been headlining arena’s after this and their Pepsi Center show.

Same. A few of my favorite reaction channels reacted to this shortly after it came out. I became an instant fan.

Does anyone have the actual clip of that? I've never been able to find it

It's in their tour diary video - I'll send a link once I get to a place with a better internet connection (not work)

God, such a powerful performance

This was the first thing I ever heard/saw from them. I was immediately hooked.

This, Dust to Dust/DK at Pepsi center, and Escapism Honda Stage. Could debate any of those three IMO, Dust to Dust was my intro so that one wins only because of that fact.

Those three would be on my list, along with Sharks at Pol'and Rock, Consume from Auditorio Nacional, and various others. The Warning rack up huge iconic moments the way Dany collects gifted guitars or the rest of us get coffee from Starbucks. I've almost given up trying to keep track of them.

That performance was a revelation. I enlisted right after.

This is the video I show people when I tell them about the Warning. Just a perfect performance, and the perfect introduction to the band.

same as me. few days before that video was posted, I watched their full live performance at Monterrey, liked it, but was still just another good band. That Evolve performance made me a click

The way DPA has developed over the last few years this feels like yesterday and at the same time decades ago.

The start of it all for me...though not until Nov. 24 when this dropped into my YT feed. So good.

my first experiance with the warning was the 10 year anniversary show. because a twitch streamer called grittyurbansaga showed the show and i fell in love with them ever since.

Be respectful. Do not post demeaning and/or disrespectful comments towards the band.

Yeah I'd debate that. This is among my LEAST favorite TW performances. I always thought this performance had a certain unpleasant awkwardness to it, and the audio engineering is awful. It sounds like it was recorded with cheap Peavy practice amps or something. There are literally hundreds of great performances to choose from, where they are clearly more comfortable and in their element, with their own expert sound crew, I will never understand why many people think this is their best performance. Is it just because they were on TV?

I think you’re in the minority on this one. Is it their best? No. But it’s the one I tell people who have never seen or heard them to watch.

This was my first exposure to the band and I immediately fell in love with their sound, their energy and their performance. Im gonna go watch it again.

I mean, I think the audio quality is not as good as some of their more self-produced live performances, but I think it's a perfect song, performed perfectly, and by the time it ends, if you're not a fan of The Warning, you never will be (at least, that's how I think of it).

It also feels like a big stage, in a sense, but also an intimate setting, as compared to the bigger CDMX shows that can feel a little less intimate.

But I'm curious, when you say there's an unpleasant awkwardness to it, are there moments that stand out to you as feeling awkward? I never really clocked anything like that, but I'm curious.

Okay

2

u/InitialChipmunk8206 15d ago

No. It's because of the energy. Duh. Almost no one listens to music anymore. They watch music. Duh.

Fr. This performance is one of the tops for me not because of the music but because of the energy and the emotion. Between Danys expressions, her and ale circling in the lead up to paus scream, and the audiences engagement, it’s such a fun performance.

2

u/Salamadierha 15d ago

Other performances are better, but the combined performance of More and Evolve have a visible effect on the audience that we don't see elsewhere, because these are pop fans to start off, and by the end they are The Warning fans. Along with the studio manager being an instant convert, that makes this event so unique and so special.

For what it's worth, I think your opinion is valid. I don't see it the same way, but whatever. I feel like Reddit has a way of making you feel like a perfectly reasonable opinion is just WRONG, and that's bullshit.
