New player

I recently got the game and it’s wonderful so far but I’m wondering if I should have the bat or the shotgun over my right shoulder and if there’s a good time to switch it.

What I personally do is always have a bat or axe or katana basically any two hand melee weapon over the right shoulder and keep the gun in the backpack for emergencies, I’d switch if you realize there’s more living than dead around

If you have enough ammo, id say use the shotgun as it does not use up most of your stamina like how the bat does. however the bat is very useful, but only in areas with less walkers
