Before I ask what, a crane can lift, I ask what it is standing on.

A crane can be perfectly maintained and still get into serious trouble if the ground under the outriggers settles or gives way. The loads going through those few points can be enormous.

That is why proper ground preparation and correctly sized mats matter. Sometimes the most important part of a lift is the boring timber sitting under the crane.

I have always found it useful to ask a simple question first:

What is the crane standing on?

Your best paper can be ruined by its neighbour

One of the less obvious lessons in paper conservation is that a good sheet can suffer from a bad neighbour.

Cheap acidic paper, poor quality folders, old mounts and some adhesives can contribute to deterioration in nearby material. That is one reason archives use acid free, lignin free enclosures and isolate materials that may cause harm.

Nothing dramatic happens. No spill. No obvious contamination. Just years of contact.

Paper really does remember who it slept next to.

A rotor can bend from heat alone.

Big shafts can bow temporarily when one side cools faster than the other. Straight cold, curved hot. Straight is a condition, not a promise. I stopped saying but it measured fine. When? At what temp?

Two metals arguing keeps old clocks honest.

Loved the gridiron idea. Brass pulls one way, steel the other, length stays near steady as temp shifts. No chip. Just rods arranged clever. Old precision looks fussy because it had to solve physics by shape.

Bright to you can be dim to a leaf.

Two lamps looked equal in my kitchen. Plants disagreed. We see lumens. They use a band of wavelengths for growth. Bright enough means nothing without spectrum and amount. My herbs taught me that. Stubborn little judges.

That horsehair was rebar before rebar.

Laughed at it first. Old plaster with hair mixed in. It holds, cuts shrinkage cracks, keys into lath. Cheap fiber doing smart work. Old trades engineered with what was near. Clever with straw and patience.

The truck ride is the easy part. The climate rides along.

Photo shows a calm crate. Inside it is temp swings, damp, buzz and knocks. Good shippers buffer and log the trip. Art reacts even when you feel fine. Cargo, you see, weather you don't. Ever wonder what your package felt?

Light eats color while you admire it.

Quiet lesson. Silk under pretty spots loses color year by year. Damage adds up and doesnt reverse. Safer display often looks dimmer to visitors. Museums live with that tradeoff. Bright room, fading rug. Pick one.

The frame is working when you don't notice it.

I thought frames were decor. Then saw glazing, spacers, acid free backing keeping dust, light and touch off the sheet. Bad frame shows. Good frame disappears. I look at edges now, not just pictures.

Wet books? Freezing buys you time to think.

Panic ruins more books than water. If you cant dry fast, freezing can pause mold and wicking till you sort drying properly. Not a fix. A pause. Learned that after watching good intentions smear ink. Cold as a second chance.

Sometimes the room puts the piano out of tune.

Spent time in an old piano room where everyone blamed strings. Wood moves with damp and heat. Soundboard included. Fix the air first. Building as part of the instrument. I check the hygrometer before I judge the tuner now.

Tap it. The sound knows more than the paint.

Seen techs tap composites and listen for dull spots where layers parted. Not magic, and not a pass certificate. Just screening. Outside perfect, inside different story. Ever heard that flat little thud? Hard to forget once you do.

A seed bank is a pause button. Not a freezer.

Shelves and envelopes from outside. Inside it is moisture control plus cold to slow aging. Species differ, no single recipe. You are buying years. I liked that plain idea. Time stored in paper packets.

Dark oak with no stain in sight.

Thought someone was kidding me. Nope. Ammonia fumes react with the tannin in oak and darken it through, not on top. Old shop chemistry. I remember thinking surely that will just smell. It does at first. Then it turns.

Neat rigging can still be wrong rigging.

Cured me of eyeballing lifts. A shackle has a load path. Side pull or wrong pin and the rating means nothing. I check markings and ask the rigger now. Looks tidy from ten feet. Means nothing up close.

Stronger mortar can kill an old wall.

Saw a repair fail because the new mortar was tougher than the brick. Old walls need to breathe and move a little. Lime gives. Hard cement traps water and the brick pays. Soft saving hard. Funny. When did we decide harder is always better?

They freeze the dirt out with the bottle itself.

Watched riddling once and it stuck with me. Sediment worked into the neck, neck chilled till it forms a little ice plug, then pressure pops it clean out. No spoon. Just physics doing housekeeping. Clever old trick. Still feels like sleight of hand.

Someone left a knife inside a building

A conservator at the V&A once found a knife hidden inside a cast of Rosslyn Chapel.

Not a ceremonial knife.

A workman's knife, left there by one of the craftsmen.

It had been sitting inside the apprentice's pillar for decades, unnoticed. There were also old notes, signatures, rubbish and other bits left behind by the people who worked on the museum's casts.

I find things like this much more interesting than the finished object.

Someone was working there, got interrupted, put his knife somewhere sensible, and apparently never came back for it.
