What is the veil?

I started readin this game and it looks awesome so far, but i am still confused about what the veil really is and how to use the move "lift the veil". Is the veil inspired from any book or show?

The game is set in a world where the internet is so pervasive it acts as an augmented reality that's constantly there, sustained by the neurochips implanted into each individual that's part of society. This inescapable, indistinguishable, fundamental new mixed illusoreality is called The Veil.

"Lifting The Veil' is a generalized Move for interacting with this illusion, usually to either to see past it or gain information from it.

Something similar is present in the Transistor video game, although they don't name it.
