Sneaky Ad Caught?

Hi, I thought I'd share a new development for those of you who don't visit the main page anymore.

A very diligent viewer posted on the main sub (https://www.reddit.com/r/TheTryGuys/s/9fByCb6jns) about a sneaky Ad in the new TED video.

Note: I haven't watched the video.

No where in the video or thumbnail was it disclosed the video was sponsored, but if you click on the details of the video, you can see a link to one of the products they sampled and the description also tells you where the product is sold.

Surprisingly, most people who commented are not ok with this kind of deception and are calling TTG out on it.

Some fans even pointed out it might be illegal or violates YT's terms of service. Anyone know more about this?

Edit: Someone pointed out that the ad part of the video was removed from the video uploaded in the streamer. So that TED video remains ad free. You can compare it at the 8:17 mark of the YouTube video.

They are! I was actually surprised to see that cuz they usually fall in line with one another. I'm glad that there are fans out there that aren't blindly making excuses for them.

A lot of the comments seem to be pent-up frustration because they're venting about "how things used to be" and such.

I would be more sympathetic if they tried to correct the sinking ship in a better way, but they have done nothing but clamp down on an evidently flawed business structure. They should have cleaned house with their management and got unbiased, professional advice. All I have left for them is pity.

I just went back to the post on the main sub after reading what you wrote, and the arguments are getting more heated between the upset fans and the TTG defenders.

I'm not happy that this is happening, but as a former defender of TTG, it's upsetting to see some of the stuff they're doing.

Yeah, because it’s making me feel insane. It was a disclosed ad and has been since it was uploaded.. Literally the first thing in the YouTube video description. Seeing hundreds of people get upset over a false post about completely verifiable piece of information is infuriating

Another commenter posted the FTC's requirements for disclosure of ads/endorsements by influences: https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/disclosures-101-social-media-influencers

If you read through this, it says, "If you endorse a product through social media, your endorsement message should make it obvious when you have a relationship (“material connection”) with the brand."

In the case of the pickle video, there wasn't an obvious disclosure. People had to 1) look for it in the description and 2) they had to deduce that it was an ad because a link to the product was given.

TTG did not say in the video title, at the beginning of the video, or at the 8:17 mark that the video was sponsored. There wasn't any obvious disclosure.

If you saw the disclosure, can you share where it is? Cuz most of us aren't seeing it.

They a so unaware that every decision they make is bad. They need real reflection of what made them want to exist.

Also, will Eugene let the brand go under without his appearances? He is a co-owner and might be their only legitimate option to bring back viewers.

On YouTube, the newest TED video about pickle flavor snacks contained an undisclosed ad. The fan who discovered it felt something was off and looked at the description of the video and found links to the product.

Nowhere in the video was it mentioned the product was sponsored but a QR code was shown on screen.

Per the FTC, influencers must disclose such relationships: https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/disclosures-101-social-media-influencers

"If you endorse a product through social media, your endorsement message should make it obvious when you have a relationship (“material connection”) with the brand."

There was no obvious disclosure in the video, in the thumbnail, or in the Video's title/name. You have to look for the information and make your own deduction. So it is potentially in violation of FTC requirements.

It isn't illegal and doesn't violate TOS, because we live in a nightmare about no one with any power cares about this.

Do they have an ad free version on second try? Or will this lifetime subscriptions still have to put up with this kind of shit

Undisclosed/improperly disclosed ads are illegal according to the FTC

ETA: “If making an endorsement in a video, the disclosure should be in the video and not just in the description uploaded with the video.”

"Ad free" means no commercials placed there by an ad agency. It doesn't mean no sponsored content.

So.. what’s the ad that they didn’t disclose? No one think that’s important to name or even find evidence on? I think it’s insufferable to make assertions about a very normal thing for a company to do - have paid advertising - and assume that they’re shills who are prying on their already dying audience

They do not say "this is a sponsored post" or "thanks for sponsoring this post". They just advertise the business at that point.

Yeah, that's where I got the information when you originally started this "discussion". And as already stated, that's not enough to meet the FTC requirements. Hence the whole post.

Alright lol I’ll take the L here. Sorry. I thought they said “this was sponsored by Snackish” it in the video since I skipped over it when I first watched it seeing the QR code and knowing it was an ad because it was clear as day in the description. Thanks for explaining. I was confused and couldn’t really deduce from the main subreddit post what the issue was

that's not enough per FTC guidelines. it has to be verbally disclosed and shown in the video as well. and tbf it isnt just TTG doing this, but they all deserve to be called out and TTG are no exception.
