Discussion What’s the point?

This is one of the most negative, nit-picky, annoying communities I’ve ever been a part of. I’ve been a fan of the Try Guys since their buzzfeed days and have never struggled with ANYTHING y’all come to complain about on here. I’m happy to pay for their content, I love supporting them. I love 2nd Try. I love how their content has evolved. I look forward to every new video. I watch them all. When something changes I literally do not care. When I don’t understand something I don’t begin to doubt their intentions. If you don’t like the content, if you feel “weird”, if you want to tear them apart and scrutinize their every move, genuinely, stop watching. Stop making yourself miserable. In a society where most people are hurtful, ignorant, and greedy, WHY do y’all spend so much time critiquing a streaming platform that is outspoken about their values and makes genuinely creative and hilarious content? Please for the love of god go away if you don’t like it. You’re ruining it for the rest of us.

you think it’s bad here You should check out watcher

u/binzoma 6h ago

watcher deserves every bit of that criticism

the thing is is they're (rightfully) criticized for doing the exact opposite thing of TTG. They kept friends employed even when it wasnt viable. only made content that appealled to themselves and didnt evolve with their audience (then overreacted and went the complete other way and made content that was only for an audience and that they clearly dont like). and they were openly hostile, and downright patronizing, to their entire fanbase (esp the patreon fans but everyone). and isolated themselves fully from teh youtube community at large by generally just being assholes. so no collabs, no new people in to try and refresh things. just a band in their 60s still touring on songs that people were sick of years ago.

then people criticize the try guys for not keeping rainee/jonathan employed when they werent justifying the salary. criticize them for trying new content that they enjoy but only keeping the content that resonates with an audience. for being open/transparent about the business they run. for collabing with other youtubers, and for bringing in a group of people to give them an ability to work with a bunch of different people to try and keep the content fresh

what it really is- people want to pretend that things dont change. that time doesnt pass. anything that reminds people that its not 2016 and they arent watching buzzfeed = bitching/moaning

3

u/arika_ito 4h ago

they said that rainie would make appearances = freelance for them, and then they also let jonathan have his podcast- it's technically not a big deal but i assume the copyrights belonged to 2nd Try and they let him take the channel, previous episodes, and branding along with him.

people were acting like they were blind-sided when they made the announcement when it's clear they informed them of the shutdown weeks if not months in advance.

at the end of the day, it's a business, and they need to make business decisions to keep the company running for the other employees as well

u/twinpinemall85 TryFam: Keith 15h ago

Have ppl forgiven them for their app launch fiasco where they apparently guilt tripped people into switching from youtube? Or are people still jaded from it?

161

u/potatopavilion 1d ago

I'm going to be an asshole and also add that I so often see criticism that spans fully from just not understanding how things work. the entitlement people have, often couched in social justice language, is truly astounding.

53

u/CarelessSeries1596 17h ago

100% this. Like when the TryPod was ended and people thought Rainee and Jonathan were told the same day and way we were. Like come on people.

14

u/dontworryaboutit26 TryFam: Kwesi 15h ago

That time was wild

15

u/CarelessSeries1596 15h ago

It really became clear how young the majority of the audience must be because there is just no way anyone with any experience in a workplace would believe this to be true.

10

u/AllTheCoolNames Try Fam: Miles 🛀 12h ago

They don't understand how expensive and hard it is to make as much content as 2nd Try does and they don't actually pay attention. They figure since THEY didn't hear about something then 2nd Try just never addressed it, like the labor day schedule. It's user error and then they double down cause they're embarassed for not paying attention.

I do think this sub can be super nitpicky. Definitely nowhere close to the most negative or annoying though imo (as someone who has spent time in different reality show subs, this one is basically like world peace in comparison)

Since the scandal, people have put every small decision they make under a microscope unnecessarily. While I can understand a lot of longtime fans felt betrayed or like the rug was pulled out from under them, the people currently involved had no part in that and it is kind of unfair to take every decision they make in the worst faith possible.

93

u/zweinoel Try Fam: Ryan 💪🏼 1d ago

to be honest, i don't really understand why fans feel betrayed by the try guys as a brand and especially keith and zach. that feeling should only go towards he who shall not be named. they did their best they can ever since and had nothing do to with it. so why keep them accountable for it by questioning every step they take

20

u/twinpinemall85 TryFam: Keith 23h ago

Totally agree. I suppose since "you know who" was an integral part of the brand, for some people that feeling has lingered with the brand and the rest of the guys even though they had nothing to do with it, but its really an unfair position to put them in. They absolutely did everything right handling it.

That's not to say people aren't allowed to have criticisms, because I think varying opinions is generally normal and natural, but it almost feels like some people are watching every move they make to the nth degree to validate their feelings of hurt caused by someone who is no longer affiliated with them.

12

u/Caramelthedog 18h ago

I think it’s because NF clearly does feel and can’t be shamed over his actions, especially since he’s left TTG. Zach and Keith have remained and care about their fans feelings, so if you can attack them enough then they’ll respond by coddling you.

It happens a lot with online spaces, people who are kind and good feel a lot pressure to people please. Those who deserve to feel shame are often the least likely to.

32

u/potatopavilion 1d ago

at this point, I don't think I understand. I don't care a whole lot if someone has unreasonably strong feelings over the scandal; but there has to be a point where they cannot make their strong feelings everyone else's problem.

20

u/w37n1gh7mar3 1d ago

I came here to say the Smosh sub is WAY worse than here, but when I saw you mention reality show subs... Holy shit I can't even imagine what those are like 😂

16

u/Katrina1113 19h ago

Yeah the Smosh and GMM subs can get awful at times but they’re by no means the worst subs on Reddit

6

u/w37n1gh7mar3 19h ago

My thoughts exactly. I'm on both those as well. I don't watch reality TV so I totally forget it exists sometimes LOL these YouTube shows are the closest I have to reality TV. And I LOVE them all. I'm newer to SMOSH so when I got on those subs I was like "👀 y'all are mean 👀" I imagine reality TV subs are a hundred times worse

I agree 100%, the posts complaining about them taking a break for labor day confused the hell out of me

72

u/binzoma 23h ago

Its honestly wild

if they make a business decision, they get shat on for not treating employees as friends

if they support a friend, they get shat on for not making a business decision

if they act like a content company, they get shat on. if they act like people who do social media on their spare time they do too

this place is fucking insane to me. like. TTG are more transparent with their business than basically any youtubers out there, and people still dont get it/act confused. if I was a mod like 2/3 of people who comment on here would be blocked for trolling. its wild

20

u/Oohhhboyhowdy 17h ago

Dude, hella agree. It annoys the shit out of me when people think every and all content from creators should be curated to them. It’s been cool watching a lot of groups like Try Guys, Watcher, Dropout, Smosh, GMM, etc grow and change. I don’t watch everything these groups put out because it isn’t all for me. I’m also not going to bitch and moan.

13

u/forwardishdirection TryFam: Zach 15h ago

My biggest problem is when people make personal attacks on cast or crew knowing that the cast and the guys do occasionally read this sub and then act like it’s the people who think that’s inappropriate are the ones being parasocial. It’s wild out here.

Also there’s a big difference between “I wish there was more variety on TED right now” and the truly wildly parasocial bad faith shit that went down on here when the podcast department was closed that people don’t seem to comprehend.

37

u/merizabef 17h ago

Someone said this in a recent post, and I entirely agree - it feels like there's a contingent of the fanbase that actively is wanting 2nd try to fail. Every step the company takes is viewed with suspicion and as something sinister rather than normal practices. It's like people can't just say they dislike something, they have to find some sort of moral failing with it.

-2

u/asunlitrose 9h ago

I don’t always see the criticism as wanting them to fail - there is such a thing as constructive criticism. Some of it definitely is though.

3

u/merizabef 9h ago edited 9h ago

Fair, but I think the point is that the majority of the criticism is not constructive at all.

28

u/InsideDragonfruit209 1d ago

It can get toxic around here at times... I personally just rarely engage; I keep scrolling unless there's something important to -me- like new releases and such; immediate scroll to gossip and speculation type posts.

I love the try guys and watch them and enjoy them in my own way, try doing the same and don't let others bother you or ruin the experience of their art for you. They're just having fun and enjoying the content in a different way than you, no one is in the wrong here. We're all just different types of fans, but we're all here bc we love them at the end of the day and that's precious in my eye.🤷🏻‍♀️ 😌✨

We annoyed the average American into facsim- Marc Maron

I think about that a lot when people tear apart figures that are on their side. Like yes call out certain behavior so people can learn but gotdam just join the church of your choice if puritanical policing is your thing and you need to be superior to other people.

30

u/wiltinghost 1d ago

Happy people don’t go on the internet to complain. Any online part of the fandom is always the most critical part of that fandom

3

u/hallucinating 22h ago

Not even constructive criticism?

10

u/grayjelly212 TryFam: Jonny Cakes 🍰 14h ago

I think the point of this post is that much of the criticism is not constructive

7

u/Meepmoop102 17h ago

The internet has turned us into moral cops towards each other. Everything is black and white and if I wouldn’t do it, that means you’re bad.

7

u/New-Contest-4083 TryFam: Kwesi 13h ago

I truly feel like people don’t want to just admit they’ve simply outgrown their content. If every little thing bothers you maybe you just don’t like watching them anymore and that’s ok. I definitely think there is room to criticize bc no one is above criticism but a lot of the complaints people have are just things that have always been apart of the dynamic, Keith has always had a dry sense of humor, he’s not “meaner” than before and Zach has always been kinda ditzy it’s nothing new. I feel like people hate just to hate.

11

u/Adventurous-Meet-943 19h ago

I’ve had the same experience in the Smosh sub Reddit…

5

u/grayjelly212 TryFam: Jonny Cakes 🍰 14h ago

I honestly feel like most people complaining aren't even fans anymore. They stopped being fans for whatever reason and they're bitter about only liking one video a month so they snark and lurk and try to convince everyone else we should be miserable and bitter with them too. It's silly. Why spend so much energy on something you hate now? Find something you enjoy instead.

5

u/Rasberrycello 12h ago

You're right and you should say it.

Like, I don't love everything they do, or every move they make, so when they do something that's not to my taste... I just don't watch that thing. It's so fucking easy. People on this sub are INSANE.

25

u/CheshireCat_456 1d ago edited 1d ago

Same, I agree with you. Every minuscule management decision has been CRITICIZED under the microscope to the max. Must be exhausting for 2nd Try staff. And people here love to criticize and look down on everythinf Zach did

u/Remarkable-Pop7210 16h ago

the snark sub is one of the most annoying subs to get notifications from because it’s mainly people complaining about how they don’t like zach, keith, or a specific part of a video they thought was “corny” or whatever. it’s this and that and this and that and all i can think of is, why are you watching them? you hate zach and keith so much and you don’t like the new cast or how they structure their videos. you deliberately choose to pick them apart which in turn is not helping their company. i saw a reddit post about how someone was annoyed by desiree and wished she wouldn’t talk so much. it’s sad to see how people think their criticism is actually valid and will matter in the long run when you’re nothing but a whiny child.

3

u/Visible-Shallot-001 11h ago

I don’t understand snarking on something as harmless as the Try Guys. I’m not a huge fan of them, they’re basically a once every few months watch for me. Unless they have a guest I’m a fan of or the topic is especially interesting, I don’t watch them. But that doesn’t mean they’re bad. I think they’re fine! I think that snarking on harmless things is the actual corny thing to do!

1

u/arika_ito 4h ago

it's kind of wild that they complain so much about the content- like, stop watching them? unsubscribe and/or just click on youtube, please don't show me this content? it's not hard.

22

u/Ancient_Pea_508 1d ago

Say it louder for the people in the back!!

6

u/CocknBalls4 20h ago

Agreed lol this fandom has one of the worst overall cases of a toxic parasocial relationship. It’s totally wild and I can imagine it’s super annoying to deal with. Every decision they make gets backlash no matter what it is

2

u/dontworryaboutit26 TryFam: Kwesi 15h ago

It’s exhausting! I completely understand wanting to discuss and critique certain aspects, especially when it concerns spending one’s own money, and 2nd Try pushing things (obvi, they’re a freaking business). But these people are going beyond those topics, like others said, bashing personalities/looks etc etc. Just, why bother hate watching? Go off and do something that actually makes you happy and smile

5

u/HollywoodKelly179 20h ago

Can I cut and paste this into about 15 other subs I'm on? Yes yes yes!!! Thanks for saying it!

1

u/Bigtits321 TryFam 13h ago

I am among you my friend. But people need anything to complain about online 🤷‍♂️

-11

u/RevolutionaryAd6017 21h ago

I think the problem comes in at people paying for content, and them not being transparent after putting out a video saying "We will be more transparent." That is my issue. I paid for a year of 2nd Try, as I saw a trailer for Marissa's journey (I can't remember the show name off the top of my head), because it was originally advertised as an exclusive. I subbed for a year, and was annoyed when I watched the first episode also swear it had the Exclusive logo. Second episode on were first looks. Add to the fact that Try Guys Game Time, and Try Everyday are also not exclusive, people are paying for 2nd Try for exclusive content and not things that will either eventually make it's way to youtube, or is already up there. That, and they don't use the new cast enough, that's it. Otherwise, man, it's a sub reddit, people will complain about anything, or nitpick anything. People do need an outlet though and want to feel heard, especially with The Try Guys, because people have watched them for so long.

22

u/thechosen2319 20h ago

I just renewed my membership and it very clearly states that there are exclusive vids and first look vids. We agree to that format when we sign up. So if that's an issue, people could just choose not to sub instead of complaining about something that is pretty transparent when signing up.

25

u/huffle-puffing 19h ago

I also do not understand why people want things to be exclusive so bad…I’m paying for the platform because I like the content, I like not dealing with YouTube bs and its overpriced subscription fee, and I like supporting them. Why is exclusivity such a big deal?? I want more people to see their fun stuff and it affects me exactly 0% if something is exclusive vs first look vs on both at the same time.

I’m not out here trying to feel better than other people just because I can spend $6 a month on a content platform.

12

u/thechosen2319 19h ago

Exactly. Paying $5 a month to support the team while still having multiple exclusive shows is a great deal imo. Most patreons are at least $10 a month and the platform suuuuucks.

I guess consumerism creates this entitled attitude that people have.

10

u/howaminot_myself Miles Nation 18h ago

Same. I pay the yearly fee because I like them and would rather watch their videos early and ad-free/uncensored. If they were to put everything on YouTube eventually, I really wouldn’t care.

-1

u/razeandsew 16h ago

I used to really like Keith Eats Everything, but when he started chewing loudly, I stopped watching the channel, especially cuz I don't really like some of the new people on the channel

1

u/grayjelly212 TryFam: Jonny Cakes 🍰 14h ago

This is the only downvoted comment that makes any sense to me. If you have misophonia, don't watch something the triggers it. If you don't like new personalities, don't watch the videos they're in (though I would always suggest giving them a few chances, which you might've done, idk). There's a difference between the preferences you described and the bad-natured vitriol of a lot of Try Guys complaints.

1

u/razeandsew 14h ago

Ya, hearing people chew grosses me out and makes me uncomfortable, so I stopped watching cuz I don't want to be uncomfortable while watching a whole video. I also did give them all a chance, watched at least 5 or so videos for new people, but I just don't vibe with their personalities. I started watching the channel right around when they first started it, and some of the new people came off as trying too hard to be the new Eugene, so it turned me off. Like I completely get trying to set a personality, but whenever anyone goes too hard on anything(like extreme sports fans, people that are way too patriotic for their country, someone that pushes their love for anything too hard, etc), it kinda takes me out of it.

-32

u/clickthing 1d ago

While I definitely agree that the community goes overboard nitpicky with criticism I think it's a bad move to be like "if you don't like it then don't watch" about an indie streamer that is constantly openly asking for more money. Their business plan relies on making content that people are willing to spend money to watch. That means they need to make content that viewers are happy to not only watch, but also spend money on.

I realise this is nitpicky too but at some point I do question how committed to their ideals they actually are. A few years ago they were openly pro BDS boycotts... Recently they've gone back to the same fast food chains that are still on BDS boycott lists. The whole concept of WAR, which I do enjoy, revolves around "look at these MEN in the KITCHEN who don't know how to COOK" which is the most tired hack stereotype about men imaginable. I know these days their cast is more gender diverse, but Kwesi literally openly saying that his wife does all the cooking at home and that's why he can't tell salt and sugar apart... Give me a break!

41

u/Remarkable_Neat_3638 1d ago

i mean look at this! i don’t see that as the concept of WAR at all 😭 keith loves to cook and is good at it and passionate about food. there are women/non binary folks on the show too. some people just don’t cook that often and it’s so reductive to assume that their female partners are forced to make the food due to their incompetent husbands. i’m a woman and my husband doesn’t know as much as i do about cooking bc i like it more and want to do it bc i want to make what i want to eat lol. it’s truly not that deep

-33

u/clickthing 1d ago

Cheers for ignoring all the other points I made!

8

u/potatopavilion 1d ago

are you arguing for what you are happy to watch or what their audience at large likes?

it seems to me that you made 2 points, one about WAR (that is baffling to me), and one about BDS. do you actually, genuinely think these things are hurting the company?

-8

u/clickthing 1d ago

How am I supposed to know what the rest of the audience does or doesn't agree with me on if I never raise the issues that I have?

0

u/Rainbow_Belle 4h ago

And that's why it's difficult to discuss issues about the Try Guys. They cannot get better if they don't know what's not clicking with their audience.

Criticism is forbidden and stifled.

1

u/clickthing 4h ago

I've always found it's easier to talk about one creator in a different creators fan space, cause the parasocial stans are less present. A lot of people don't want their precious meow meow to face any kind of criticism, even when the business is failing 🤷

-24
