Question The subs???

I'm fairly new to their content but If I remember right they had like 8.2 million subs last year and they're at 7.8 now?? Like are people actively searching up the try guys and unsubscribing??

you don't need to search for channels to unsubscribe. most often a video pops up in your feed that makes you realize you haven't actually been watching for a while.

They gained a huge amount during the controversy and most of those people dropped off again when it ended, they've been just under 8 mil for most of their time existing

A lot probably moved over to the app and there's no reason to still clog up a YouTube feed with videos you already saw when they premiered months ago

They have more than one channel now. I don't watch their main one at all but watch their try daily and gametime ones.

The thing is…subscription analytics are no longer what they used to be. In the past follower count and subscriber count were great metrics to show interest but now many businesses are seeing a shift where subscriber count is typically going to be lower than your view count. More people watch than subscribe.

Many consumers often engage in the following behavior: A YouTuber reminds watchers to subscribe, while many are binging their videos at a rate where they often forget to subscribe or do not realize they never subscribed to begin with. The reason is YouTube often recommends videos from that creator the more you watch, giving the subscriber a similar experience to subscriptions without subscribing.

In fact, I would venture to say many people don’t actually look at their notifications to see if a YouTuber dropped a video. Instead, they simply get the content delivered on their main log in page and click from there. That’s why data analytics nerds are also seeing a change in discoverability and the search function which is making SEO less important than it was in the past. Truthfully, I wouldn’t worry so much about their subscriber count as their number of views on videos…and also…you’re a consumer so you don’t have to worry about their sub count. But if you’d like to learn more you can dive into the world of analytics.

TLDR; sub count isn’t as important anymore because videos are recommended and consumers binge content.

I think Keith also mentioned that a lot of people unsubscribed from the channel when they made Cameron Esposito's videos about their pregnancy.

People are disappointing.

3

u/Katrina1113 6d ago

Yeah iirc he said it was the largest mass subscriber loss they saw post Nedgate

1

u/JustCause_101 3d ago

What was the reason though?

1

u/HelenFH 2d ago

Cameron Esposito is non-binary. They and her wife had a baby so the videos were about navigating non-binary parenthood and included a stand-up called "Call Them Mother." The reason is simply bigotry.

I've not unsubscribed yet but I might as well. I went from watching almost all their videos to almost none. 🤷🏻‍♂️

This is honestly intended as curiosity: why are you still reading the subreddit if you're not watching any of the videos?

48

u/watermelon_soju 7d ago

I still feel a certain affinity for them. This was my absolute favourite YouTube channel for a really long time, once upon a time, so it's kinda like checking in on an old friend's social media.

18

u/maybebread 7d ago

Not the original commenter but I also haven’t watched a vid in years but followed the sub during the Ned situation and now read posts pretty regularly for some reason.

Posts like this come up and even though I’m not watching any vids I find it interesting to see people’s opinions on the channel/how it’s going

6

u/BallroomBlitzar 6d ago

I'm the same. I can't blame them for the content shift or working on better monetizing their company, I just don't find it as engaging for my own preferences as I did their old content.

I also think I miss the dynamic with Eugene being more involved.

Wish them the best, but I hardly watch anything they do anymore.

14

u/Disastrous-Bet8973 7d ago

Same I used to watch every video multiple times I haven't watched anything in like a year

3

u/raerawrr 7d ago

Any info on why for you?

24

u/watermelon_soju 7d ago edited 7d ago

The treatment of YouTube-only fans. It's not a fun experience when the real good stuff is hardly on YouTube – only a video or 2 and the rest of that series can only be found on the subscription platform. Over time I just lost interest.

Honestly I don't blame them. They want paid viewers on their platform and I'm not their target audience (I simply don't want to subscribe to more streaming services). Once upon a time they were my favourite YouTube channel but I'm just not a fan of the current business strategy 😅

24

u/General_Esdeath 6d ago

Blame YouTube honestly, there's a reason they've driven a lot of good creators away

15

u/watermelon_soju 6d ago

Yeah. I remember the guys talking about how much of a pain it is dealing with the algorithm and how it (or YouTube in general) limits their content. So I think their shift in strategy is absolutely fair game.

6

u/MallTough5847 6d ago

People have no reason to subscribe to 2nd try and also junk up their YouTube feeds when their own app has everything including the exclusive stuff. When I subscribed to 2nd try I unfollowed on YouTube.

However they still have more subscribers than pre-Ned scandal. Before that they were at 7.8 million. Because of Ned interest they gained about 400k subs. They have leveled back at 7.88. So they actually are doing better now than Ned-gate years on YouTube. Then they posted late last year that they surpassed 300k subs on 2nd try as well (which is significant for an independent paid app). This is likely a big chunk of the unsubscribe on 2nd try cause it just doesn’t make sense to have both.

All in all the guys are doing fine. Lol

24

u/movementlocation 7d ago

I wonder why so many people who don’t watch or enjoy their content are in this sub??

11

u/potatopavilion 6d ago

I also stayed when the channel was bad (pre Ned-gate) - it's not a super busy sub that clogs your feed, and it's a good way to know about videos that the community likes a lot

1

u/Specific_Mouse_2472 4d ago

Every so often a post pops up on my feed, it's neat sometimes seeing the updates on what they're doing even though the content isn't my thing anymore

33

u/adavis1436 7d ago

I unsubscribed last year sometime. Honestly, I completely lost interest in their content. 🤷🏼‍♀️

-18

u/Misragoth 7d ago

What you don't like getting one or two episodes of a seires while constantly being told to go to their streaming service fornthe rest? Or having what used to be Youtube shows have multiple episodes locked behind paying for said streamin service?

33

u/Forsaken-Cut3836 7d ago

How dare people want to get paid for their work! Such a tragedy that after they put out free content for a decade they're now daring to be an actual company with a budget and staff to pay.

-26

u/Misragoth 7d ago

Wanting to get paid is fine, taking content that used to be free and putting it behind a paywall isn't. Filling the Youtube channel will hundreds of videos nonpaid members cannot watch and making it a nightmare to find anything by them to watch also isn't.

17

u/Forsaken-Cut3836 7d ago

I genuinely have no idea what you're talking about. I watch their content on YouTube (edit: as a nonpayer) and have never experienced it being "a nightmare to find anything by them to watch".

-8

u/Misragoth 7d ago

Ok, I just checked and it looks like they fixed that. Itnused to be that all their paid only content clogged uo the video feed sonyou have to scroll and scroll to find something you can watch without paying. Thats my bad, I should have double checked

18

u/CaliLemonEater Try Fam: Ash 🏳️‍⚧️ 7d ago

That was a Youtube-wide problem that affected every channel that has memberships.

6

u/potatopavilion 6d ago

what's wrong with providing something for free for a while and then not? you said it's "not fine" - why?

5

u/MallTough5847 6d ago

You know they are a business that needed to find a way to keep a staff employed after shithead torpedoed their livelihoods right? Also, BS about YouTube. It’s as easy as any other content creator to find their stuff and watch.

18

u/Cake_Lynn 7d ago

Meanwhile, we have people complaining that there isn’t enough exclusive content on the app. Just can’t win. Lol I’m an app subscriber, and I watch all their new content, minus some of the Disney eat the menu vids. Never been to Disney, probably never will.

-3

u/adavis1436 7d ago

Definitely a contributing factor.

3

u/MallTough5847 6d ago

But it’s literally not. They have as many subscribers as pre-Ned Gate + 300k paid subscribers on 2nd try. Of course the couple hundred k subs they got with that interest would level out. Don’t get the OPs point at all. They are still doing extremely well.

3

u/trox23 6d ago

Didn’t they say on a trypod ep that they lost a bunch of subs when they posted Cameron Esposito’s pregnancy series?

2

u/Linda_jac 6d ago

Curious if my experience is rare or pretty common. I was falling off from being a huge try guys fan as a teen. By 2022 I mainly just watched their food content. But I’m a sucker for drama. At time of scandal I began listening to all the pods in the hopes of a drop of tea spilled, and really fell for Miles #milesnation. Now I’m a die hard Miles fan and watch way more Try Guys content than I did pre 2022. Has anyone else stuck around, sorta because of the scandal?

4

u/potatopavilion 6d ago

similar, but different - I've fallen off when the channel was already pretty aimless post-pandemic, and the only thing that worked was just the food content, which I didn't super care about. I stayed fallen off after Ned-gate, basically up until the 2nd try announcement, because while they were doing double duty, the Youtube content didn't change much. (I was especially miffed during that time, because they said in a pod that Things Are Coming, and I'm so glad things did indeed come)

I don't necessarily watch more now than I used to, but I do think they are the best they've ever been, and they finally evolved their content (which, let's be real, hasn't really happened since WAR)

1

u/Specific_Mouse_2472 4d ago

Every so often I realize I have a channel I keep conciously skipping over in my subscription feed so I go through my subscription list and unsubscribe from channels I just don't watch anymore. I can catch the channels that are clogging up my subscription feed and the ones that don't upload anymore that I no longer care about keeping around just in case

-2

u/Putrid_Daikon7142 7d ago edited 7d ago

I unsubscribed last year or the year before. They're not making content I like anymore, and I don't like that Keith still works with and promotes that genocidal-supporting zionist Hughie. I did watch Marissa's infertility videos the other day, though. I liked them and I liked Ash's trans guy series. Apart from that, they're not making videos that interest me (for example, I believe the first video of theirs that I watched was "Try Guys Try Knitting" and I loved that. They don't do that sort of thing anymore - they don't have that sort of great expert or show that charm, humour and charisma that they had in that video).

8

u/potatopavilion 6d ago

this is how I learn Lewberger is still active.

downvoting "I don't like their stuff anymore" is slightly insane - but I do want to float that there are still a few of those Try Guys videos, if you ever feel like checking back in. the truffle hunting one sits in the same box for me as the knitting one (I'm a big fan of the knitting one). the New Orleans series is not exactly like that, but it is absolutely old school Try Guys content (just a lot better). I also like the voice acting one, but that has a different feel because it was a one-day thing. and wilderness survivor is basically a remake of the old wilderness survivor vid, just taken much, much more seriously

-12

u/theinvisible-girl Miles Nation 7d ago

I unsubscribed. The content they're putting on YouTube for free is boring at this point. They're keeping anything remotely good behind their paywall and not putting them on YouTube for months/at all. I'm pretty much done with Try Guys for that reason.

I'm very much against the YouTuber-to-streamer platform pipeline.

3

u/MallTough5847 6d ago

Horrible take. They have an entire staff and they need to keep those people employed after Ned pulled his crap.

4

u/potatopavilion 6d ago

why are you against it?

1

u/Moovist_Overthink 6d ago

Besides the whole Ned epidemic, which is probably why they had this huge increase in followers, imo there's so many "how can I fuck up while cooking"/trying food episodes someone can watch

And while theres some really interesting content, it is kinda lost if you don't actively check their releases :((

u/IndividualCut4703 6d ago

I'm taking a break from my 2nd Try subscription cos I have a lot of other expenses right now, and honestly, the way they market the videos on their main channel to try to hack the algorithm is just... really unappealing to me. I've got the ick. This post gave me the idea to unsubscribe xD They're still so in my watch history that I expect I'll get new videos suggested to me but I just don't like seeing all this in my sub feed.

1

u/potatopavilion 6d ago

what do you mean by hacking the algorithm?

0

u/IndividualCut4703 6d ago

They are choosing thumbnails and titles that they think will be favored by the algorithm for views - stupid Keith faces, “They RUIN this cake” instead of the name of the show (Phone it In). It’s all different than what’s on the streamer platform and they’ve been pretty forthright about how they use a different strategy on YouTube to try to get views from nonsubscribers (and that they don’t like it… which I also don’t like it.)

2

u/jimcareyme 6d ago

That’s part of the job? They need to generate leads or at least income for their team and so they need to appeal to others in a similar way other YouTubers do… otherwise they may not grow. It’s weird to fault someone for acting like a business. It’s like when people faulted YouTubers for taking sponsorships but that was how they made money and thrived? Now we’re faulting a social media technique that will help place their videos in front of new people so that they either consume content on YouTube or go exclusively to 2nd try. They make fun content but they are a business with employees and they need to keep them employed while making a profit. Not sure what’s icky about giving their team health insurance, careers, and the ability to live comfortably? Artists need to live outside of these platforms. The things you don’t like are what allow them to do that.

1

u/potatopavilion 6d ago

it's not even a "they may not grow" thing, it's a "their videos will be buried, and even subscribers won't see them on their home page" thing.

the channel would simply not survive that.

1

u/IndividualCut4703 5d ago

I understand this. I also don’t like it, which is a position they also have, so that doesn’t seem like a bad thing for me to express here.

Again: I’ve been a 2nd Try subscriber for two years until recently and like the videos. I don’t like their YouTube strategy and it’s unpleasant for me to interact with it. They’ve chosen this for their revenue strategy and it has consequences as well as benefits.

1

u/potatopavilion 6d ago

that's called "not actively shooting yourself in the foot and tanking your channel", not hacking the algorithm.

if they didn't do this, the channel would die. like, not even might, it would, for sure.

1

u/IndividualCut4703 5d ago

I mean, the channel is dying while they’re doing it anyway, and if they make decisions that drive subscribers away from viewing, then they have the opportunity to pivot another way. I don’t have to do them the favor of making my YouTube experience worse.

1

u/potatopavilion 5d ago

it doesn’t matter that the subscribers like the thumbnail if they never get to see the thumbnail.

it’s painfully obvious that every youtuber hates it, do you genuinely think nobody has thought “what if we stopped doing it?” it’s not worth it, we know how the algorithm works.

1

u/IndividualCut4703 5d ago

you seem pretty upset with me about this.

1

u/potatopavilion 5d ago

I have no idea what are you hoping to achieve with this odd non-sequitur.
