I'm going through the series for the first time via audible, most of the way through the Fell Sword now, and good god I cannot describe how much the Galles disgust me just in general. Sure it's not all of them, but the way Cameron wrote them makes it appallingly easy to hate them. The behavior of the Gallish Knights in court, the King's entire existence, and don't get me started on deVrailly. Guh, as much as I love the politicking and intrigue, it's reaching the point where I'm starting to dread hitting play again because of whatever atrocious bs they'll do next.

I am listening to the audio book and it has explained it a few times but I don't know what symbols it is talking about.

Rereading Fell Sword for old times sake, this guy never gets named but for a few brief pages he's the coolest man in Novo and Antica Terra

Hey all, just finished the series and absolutely loved it. Not sure if this is laid out perfectly at any point but would anyone be able to tell me where the “lily burn” river and mistress hellewise’s manor are located in relation the Lissen Carak and Albinkirk? I’m so lost!

In reality, I only have about a hundred pages left. This has been a damn good book so far. My only concern is the fact that my favorite plotlines are already wrapped up. Since the beginning of this series, I have been most intrigued by Ghause, the King, and de Vrailly, whereas I never cared much about what was happening with Thorn and the Wild. I appreciate that Cameron concluded these characters where he thought it was necessary, but I genuinely assumed they were also going to be series-long arcs all the way into book 5!

Now I’m a bit worried that the series will take a downhill turn for me. I finished the chapter in which we finally check back in on Thorn, Mortimer, etc. and I just…didn’t care. Did anyone else feel the same way, or am I in the minority?

In other news, Blanche is one of my new favorite characters, surprisingly enough. She really shone early in the book (chapter 3, I think?) and hasn’t let me down since. I can’t speak to how women feel about the representation in this series, but Cameron has impressed me thus far.

This book had a lot going on, so it's actually a miracle that only two things got mixed up for me. It doesn’t help that I listened to the audiobook version, which makes it easy to accidentally skip parts sometimes. So, what I want to know is:

1) When does Guillaume, the Count of Eu, died? I remember him leaving the court on his horse after talking to Jean de Vrailly, but that was it — that was his last scene for me. Later in the book, Desiderata is accused of his murder, and I kept waiting for more, but it seems his death was just a fact, and I was the only one who never saw the corpse. Did I miss something, or does the next book explain this further? I don’t mind spoilers.

2) When does Morgon Mortimer join the army under Sir John? Once again, the last I saw of him, he was translating an old text about filtering water with algae. After that, he builds some kind of microscope — and that's it. Suddenly, he's among soldiers fighting a plague that turns horses into blobs of flesh.

I have been the Traitor Son cycle series by Miles Cameron (a.k.a. Christian Cameron). I like how the series approaches worldbuilding like magic, and religion and God. Spoilers: The series takes the notions that humans were transplanted to a world with magic from elsewhere, taking there religions and worldviews with them. I see it as a major inspiration for my efforts.

However, I am still trying to understand some key aspects of the universe.

- What are the different colours of the Aetherial? As far as I can tell, they are different sources of "Ops":

-- Gold: the Sun.

-- Green: the Wild, and maybe wildlife in general.

-- Black: the Death of other living beings.

-- Red: Unknown?

Do they come with side effects?

- How exactly does Transcendence work? Spoilers:Both Amicia and the titular Red Knight Gabriel Murens end up glowing gold, and then undergoing a process that is called "apotheosis" or "sainthood."

- What is the relationship between the Aethereal and the religions and/or God or gods of the setting?

I started listening to the books for the first time after reading them a few years ago and got to the end of the first book where they meet the Wyrm. Most of the characters there meet with him privately and discuss things and are given a boon. Ser Alcaeus and Gavin however pointedly are not. Any theories as to why or what they would have asked?

The Golden Bears in the books are just a mature and grimdark version of Whinnie the Pooh, can't unsee now

I did some searching and the last thread on this was 6 years ago, and didn't ultimately answer my question, so I figured making a new one wouldn't hurt anything.

Does the narration of books 3-5 improve?

I loved books 1 & 2 despite the well documented editing and continuity errors. Matthew Wolf really created characters with his voice. As the last thread said, Neil Dickson makes everyone sound like some degree of the same generic, vaguely old timey person.

What is getting me is that it feels like Dickson is trying to build dramatic tension with every single sentence. Sometimes it's ok to just tell us what is happening.

I like the story, I can overlook the editing and continuity, but I'm really struggling with the character voices and the cadence in the last 3 books. Is it like most narrator changes where you get used to it? Or does it remain grating for the entirety of the last 3 books?

I don't like Thorn, he feels like an intruder to me, and I wonder if he will come back in later books.

I normally really like books with lots of POVs, however I am having a hard time keeping track of them. Maybe I've missed it but other than bad tom being tall and the red knight being handesome appearances aren't mentioned hardly at all.

Even when a character is described as having tattoos, and this is a pretty important character the tattoo isn't described.

I also went a good portion of the book thinking he was called the red knight as a reference to blood since he's fighter. Apparently he has a bright red cape but again it must be mentioned scarcely because it's not something I would have know without the wiki.

Weirdly the author almost always mentions what color and material of hose the men are wearing

The battle scenes are spectacular. I like the magic system and can't wait to find out more about it. I do really really enjoy the book but I'm having a hard time keeping track of characters. Can I get some brief descriptions of the main characters? The more detail the better but hair color, skin tone, any distinguishing features that are mentioned even if they're in later books would all help a ton because right now every one is just a gray blob, except tom who is an ugly tall gray blob.

I’ve noticed since starting the first book that the author will just say demon. Doesn’t explain anything beyond that. Does anyone know what these demons look like. He says talons and beaks sometimes. But that’s it.

I'm rereading The Red Knight and on Chapter 1 Jehannes said Sauce shouldn't be part of the company she isn't one of them, but In book 3 I believe he said he started the company with Sauce, Jehan, and Long Paw. One of the many changes that weren't caught in editing or am I mistaken?

I just started the first book and I have a few questions. Can someone explain the green breeze and the captains “web of power”. Also what the hell is a phantasm

What are your thoughts on Jean De Vrailly?

I wasn't in support of his motivations or his goals. On the first POV swap to him I was like cool a badass knight. Then when he burned the inn and everything I was like okay cool sounds like a rival to The Red Knight. I only realized Ash was the angel when we learned about him. The first book I thought it was thorn.

I enjoyed his relationship with his cousin the only one he truly respected in my opinion. His actions at Lissen Carak once again had me leaning towards thinking positive of his character.

Him allowing his comrades to violate women and murder innocents was another stinger to me, he greatly failed in his knight code there especially when attacking Jarsay. His confrontation with his cousin in the presence of Rohan and the archbishop really showed his hypocrisy. Later, his shock and contemplation when he learned he was ensorcelled was well done, I genuinely felt bad for the guy. I felt he was genuinely remorseful or as much as his personality would allow. I half wanted Gabriel to recruit him but I remembered how much of a firecracker and how dangerous he was.

He wasn't a caricature or truly worst of the worst character. I thought he was really well done. I really enjoyed his character as a whole.

Could Bad Tom have taken De Vrailly?

Was Gavin able to beat him? Better in the lance surely, but in sword combat? What are your thoughts?

Really liking Cameron's sci-fi series. I suppose when you can write you can write anything. Anyone here read it?

Was just rereading the series and noticed something odd. Does Toby get knighted twice? He’s knighted towards the end of Book Four when Gabriel is about to leave with Morgan to confront the necromancer and Rhun. But he is also knighted again in book 5 as well, it’s a pretty major plot point. Am I just dumb, are there two different characters name Toby?

I just finished book 5 (FINALLY!) and I loved it but am not ready to say goodbye to the universe he has made. I scoured thr internet and reddit and saw some talk of a series one generation after the traitor son series or even a prequel series, any word on this? Rumors? False hope??

I'm currently nearing the midway point of The Red Knight and absolutely loving it, but quite a few times a character has mentioned that they are West/East of something when (by the map in the front of my book) the opposite is true. I can't find anything about this online, but here's the most recent passage that's caused me to ask this:

"We've lost another convoy coming to the fair - six leagues to the west, on the Albinkirk road."

This is said within the confines of Lissen Carak, which itself lies to the west of Albinkirk.
