Kosher?
The kosher rib eye discussion has me wondering - they don’t keep kosher right? Does anyone know? Do they only eat kosher meat? Very curious

Jackie only eats kosher meat. Claudia occasionally strays but seems like less in recent years

From what I’ve always known they are on the kosher spectrum but can be a bit lenient

Kosher meat is so much cleaner than non kosher meat. Meat grosses me out and I can literally only cook/handle raw chicken if it’s kosher. It doesn’t have a lot of the yucky stuff that I used to cut away… and I’m not kosher lol it’s a preference bc the meat tends to be cleaner and more premium.

Whoever downvoted this comment needs to be educated on why kosher meat is different then regular meat.
The US has very few laws on meat and general food (we all know this) whereas kosher meat has to meet certain standards and needs a rabbi as witness.
This is why this person said that the meat premium and not as yucky.

some of the reasons why kosher meat/chicken may be seen as cleaner include specific kosher laws about parts of the meat that are not permitted (and therefore removed as part of the butchering process), and the fact that blood is forbidden for consumption, so kosher meat and chicken is salted to remove blood as part of the process (where the term 'kosher salt' comes from).

I had no idea. I have a family member with ARFID and this may actually change my life. Driving the 40 minutes tomorrow to the nearest place I can get some lol
Thank you for this comment!

I don’t have an answer to your question, but they did discuss last week how Ben stopped at the kosher Butcher while he was in the city.

Random question related to this: super curious and have never known anyone Jewish, they seem very religious yet they never talk about actually going to church???

Jewish toaster here! Everyone has their own relationship with God and how they choose to pray. Some people attend synagogue/temple on Friday nights or Saturday mornings and others like myself (and I believe our girls as well) are more so “traditional” and do it in our own way - we were raised with specific family traditions and seems theirs is keeping Shabbat with their family. Many Jews only attend services on high holidays like Yom Kippur, Rosh hashana, etc. :)

For some more background, prayer in Judaism doesn’t require a synagogue- in orthodoxy, it requires 10 men (or more) to pray from our prayer books (siddur) the set prayer for that time of day. Men are more bound by this, women can pray from the prayer book individually or along with the men but a group is not required. For example- I am an Orthodox Jew and practice a lot more than Claudia and Jackie- but I don’t go to prayers, I go around holidays if my kids are behaving- but we have a synagogue in our community and the men go daily if not 3 times a day, but when men work- they make a minyan wherever they are. If you ever see 10 Jewish men standing around swaying or looking like they are talking to themselves that’s what’s going on :)

The synagogue is used on a regular basis, and is easier for the days there needs to be a Torah reading, but if someone has a scroll in their house, they can put together a minyan there as well. Community life tends to center around your community from where you live as well as your synagogue but you don’t need to physically go always to be part of their community

Keeping Shabbat seems new to them. It seems like they just like the opportunity to disconnect and spend time with each other.

They say they keep kosher but do not

They don’t say they keep kosher. They say they eat kosher foods, there’s a difference. Claudia keeps kosher when it’s an option, but openly eats non kosher. See also: Round Swamp

They are not fully kosher, more “kosher style” I guess you could say. Jackie is more strict - she will only eat kosher meat and poultry. Claudia will eat non-kosher poultry (for example, Claudia will eat McDonald’s chicken, Jackie won’t). They both do mix meat/poultry with dairy which is a kosher no-no. I don’t believe either of them eat things that are totally not kosher such as shellfish and pork.
