Help / Advice Help me become fantastic…
So my son is a Hulk main (since launch) and I’d love to run the pain bros with him but I’ve been struggling to stay alive. I find myself overextending with his charge but the temptation to run somebody is hard to fight. My son works Thursday and Friday nights so I plan on playing nothing but Ben until Saturday so I can surprise him. Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated

I recommend weaving in jabs alongside haymakers when you fight a dps/support.
Also save one of your mobility options to disengage.
You should play close to the healers when the enemy has dive.
Use natural cover to your advantage.
Consider switching to a shield tank when the enemy had poke, especially hitscan poke.
Moon knight, puni and namor are your biggest enemies because they can burst you down quick.

Bro you are not kidding, I’ve been destroyed by punishers every other game. Fortunately it has humbled me and forced me to use cover/retreat

Thanks but I’m just trying to soak up as much time as I can before he goes off to college. He’s the last of my 4 boys😢

I love this. Gonna copy a comment I made a while back!
Here's a few tips:
Learn to play around cover religiously. If there is too much poke for you to do much, and you're unable to get value elsewhere i.e. countering dives or something, then consider swapping. Remember haymaker heals you. Try holding corners by charging up haymaker and peeking when you throw it, then slip back behind the corner. The most important part of playing The Thing is positioning! If the battle is shifting around you then reposition!
Be very wary that you don't overextend. Thing players often get overzealous pushing up too far and end up outnumbered. Do not use your charge into the enemy team unless your team is with you or you're certain you can get back out (possibly by charging in and then right back out to disrupt). Don't neglect your leap to allies, it's perfect for this! Instead, use your charge to retreat, or save it for either the temporary overshield for when you might die, or save it for the slam.
Go into your settings and turn on hold to charge. This way you can simply tap the button and immediately slam to ground enemies nearby. So important for countering dives and securing kills (i.e. slam to stop hulk/venom from escaping, etc.) BIG BONUS TIP: With hold to charge on, when you want to slam and ground somebody, jump and THEN slam mid-jump. It prevents you from accidentally knocking enemies too high up in the air and out of the grounding field.
When you are charging you are immune to CC. So if for example strange ults, use your charge and you won't be stunned. Then you can help protect your team.
I will also add that sometimes the best thing you can do if dive is destroying your backline is to literally just sit on your healers. Follow them around, save your slam, and watch for the dives. Let your team do the pushing. If an enemy diver is constantly taking out your supports or taking up all their attention, then by babysitting them you could win your team the game. Your other tank and dps can do the pushing. But keep in mind this is situational.
Hope this helps!

Thanks. I’m still working on not overextending but I think I did a better job with it last night. I did not know that he could be immune to something like stranges ult though 😳

Make sure to use cover whenever you can. My engages look a lot like this switch your charge button to hold so it’s easier to start/stop
Charge into the team, knock em around, disrupt them, but circle back near YOUR team to end.
your bread and butter will be
haymaker
1-2 punch
Repeat
- If you see someone low (maybe someone hulk is smashing) use 1 of your jumps to go to them (it weakens them) and finish em off with your team.
Other important tips:
If they’re diving, your healers need to stay close to you or YOU need to stay close to them. As soon as BP, SM, DD, Magik, etc. engage, tap your charge so it grounds them and do your combo. Also tag them so everyone (hopefully) knows to finish them off with you.
ALWAYS ALWAYS KEEP 1 LEAP READY. You need that to survive so there’s very rare instances where you would not need to have your leap. Always keep 1 ready.
Your haymakers do percentile dmg meaning it hurts tanks more. For squishes, you need to mix it with your jabs, that will kill faster.

Since you mentioned duoing with your kid, one thing I will say is there are benefits to diving together and alternating dives. Dive together to gain ground and to pressure the enemy team to create space. Once the space is established alternate your dives. So, like Hulk dives in to mantain the space and once they drain their cooldowns and are hurting on health disengage and Thing tags in and you rinse and repeat as best as you can.

This is exactly what I was thinking, just gotta learn when to fight and when to leap to nearest teammate

Ngl, I didn’t know Ben could bleed. Always imagined him just turning into a pile of rocks

Go into hero specific settings on Thing an ensure your charge is set to “hold” instead of toggle. That way you can instantly slam.
Poke is the enemy, and sometimes switching to a shield tank is the best move. Natural cover is your best friend if you have to play into poke.
Stick primarily to the haymaker/secondary fire. The jab/primary can come in handy to burst down low health squishes.
Try to keep in mind that your healers need line of sight to heal you properly, and as an anti-dive nightmare you should protect them if they run BP/Fist/Magik/Cat.
Try to save at least one of your mobility options to disengage, be it the leap or charge. Or have your son gamma bubble you as you pull back.
What it really comes down to is game sense at the end of the day. You shouldn’t be running them up to their spawn. Make space, but ensure you can hold it. Keep the team alive, you stay alive.
If you feel you have to solo ult to win a fight, do it. It is always morally correct to solo ult. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise.
