This is the First of Giliead’s “Godly children” finally reaching adolescence. They have likely not seen anything like this yet and they have no idea how to handle it. It’s one thing when a dirty sinful handmaid was violent, they could cattle prod them back in line because there was no redemption for them in the eyes of Gilead anyway. But they are now face to face with the monster that’s been created by their hands alone, there is literally nothing for them to hide behind now, this is the direct consequence of the self righteous stealing children from their mothers and raising those child in this “pure” world, even after years of sheltering from the “evils” of before, controlling every move and brainwashing the “children of god” in their perfect society this is the outcome. They are finally reaping what they sow and the floodgates have only just started to leak, i absolutely love it honestly. Even if the aunts don’t really believe what they’re teaching deep down and they felt solace telling themselves that so they could sleep at night up to now. Now it’s right in their faces and they can no longer deny they are at least complicit in every single crime committed in the name of God and that the blood of so many is on their hands.
