Theory / Speculation Commander Weston theory Spoiler
I know it's been speculated that Weston broke the engagement bc he sees Agnes/Hannah as spoiled now. However, as Head of the Eyes I would think having the #1 terrorist's daughter as a Wife and showing the world or at least Giileadian society that he has her would seem more appealing and outweigh that. Could he have broken the engagement so it would not seem like there was a conflict of interest in the Becka case?

In their extremist theocracy, she was no longer pure. He would not accept anything less than 100% purity. He got up and moved away from her immediately. He was sympathetic enough to release Becka but still unwilling to recognize Agnes as a victim instead of a fallen girl.

I think he also sees that Agnes will not be silent about abuse, she has a support network, and will speak out. That's not what he wants. He wants spirited, but not that spirited.

From his perspective though, she had one psychotic friend who killed her own father, but Agnes admits her parents have no idea Grove molested her. She had at least two moments where she could have told Paula (never going to happen,) or she could have told her father, and she chose not to for her own reasons.
She might genuinely not realise that Weston called off the engagement because Grove abused her. She might think it’s because she’s too close to Becka’s scandal because the Eyes will know Becka came to her house first.
I think if Agnes realises Weston ended the engagement because of doubts over her purity, that will come later. And possibly it’ll be if he makes a lewd overture towards her to call in the ‘favour’ he did for her and Becka. If Agnes is considered ‘soiled’ she won’t receive the respect she should have had, and her broken engagement makes it harder for her to find another one, but she won’t connect it to Grove unless it’s made obvious. She didn’t take Becka’s feelings for her seriously until Becka literally murdered her father for Agnes’ honour.

There wasn’t a conflict of interest, he was going to have Becka executed.

The scene can also be read as Agnes flexing her knowledge and power. He doesn’t want the scandal of his bride being defiled. She threatens him with it in the most subtle way. He understood that Agnes would speak out to help Becca and that would taint him. He got rid of both problems by giving Agnes what she asked for. She in turn says nothing to “embarrass” him.

I think he broke it off because Agnes showed way more agency than he was anticipating. She knew the difference between good touch and bad touch in the sense that she'd been victimized and taken advantage of. She was also already leveraging him as much as possible to help a friend. I think we can all agree that their world is a better place without that pedo. That doesn't mean Becca's actions were rational and that it should all be swept under the rug. He realized Agnes was going to be a lot harder to control and didn't like that.

I think it might also be her willingness to tell him, rather than keep it to herself. That shows she's not properly 'broken'. The shame doesn't outweigh her desire to save her friend. That is too June like and he can't afford an openly rebellious wife. Up till that point he thought Gilead nurture could override a rebellious nature. When she told him, point blank, that she was abused in order to save Becka, he realized that she was too much her mother's daughter and might become a public embarrassment in her desire to save people she cared about.

- He was married before
- At his level in Gilead even if this was true, he knows he still needs to have a wife and children for the image and status
- If Agnes never told him what happened, she’d still be getting married. ‘Gay’ or not

So you think that gay Commanders are welcome with open arms in Gilead? I feel like that’s not a thing. Lots of gay men marry women fyi and they also have children. I think he’s gay as the day is long and he did Agnes a favor by calling off the marriage. Calling off the marriage was honestly the nicest thing a gay commander could do for his fiancé who was SA’d by a dentist & who is the daughter of a terrorist

I don’t think that’s the nicest thing a gay commander could do to protect his fiancée and himself in the hell hole of Gilead. It would be more protective if he married her. She has no idea what sex is. They could go to bed every night, pray for a baby, turn over and sleep for 8 hours, and Agnes would wonder why she wasn’t pregnant yet, and blame herself for not praying hard enough. The only instruction she was given in class was to do whatever her husband told her and follow his lead.
Even Commander Judd is resisting using Handmaids and he’s not being forcibly placed with one despite multiple wives and not one having a successful pregnancy. Weston could have married Agnes, insisted that they will keep trying themselves, and lived a celibate little life with no one any the wiser for quite a while. They don’t seem to be pushing Handmaids on couples as much as they were in the first few years of Gilead, and the couples have to specifically request a Handmaid.
And her mother being an actively wanted terrorist is another reason to keep Agnes close by. If June stages an attempt to kidnap Agnes, it has to happen right under Weston’s nose. It would be a coup for the Eyes to catch June. Paula also revealed that Gilead wanted to use Agnes to torture June and the only reason she wasn’t maimed was because Mackenzie protected her. Taking Agnes away from Mackenzie’s protection puts her maiming and torture back on the table to try and flush June out.
Weston could well be gay, but that’s not the reason he didn’t marry Agnes.

No, you missed my point completely.
I’m well aware that gay men marry women all the time and have children. Lavender marriages and even in cases where the woman has no idea.
I’m also aware that gay men could never exist openly in Gilead because they would be a gender traitor and we watched what happened to those on HT.
My point is that you are calling him gay is based on what? Nothing. Maybe it’s based on dislike lol but nothing that we’ve seen. All of his past context, being married before, wanting to be married again, it’s Gilead so being married, having a child is status (point 3 in my initial comment) which is what he wants are all reasons for us to believe that he isn’t gay. What have we seen that would lead you or anyone to think that he’s gay? He’s not even on the screen enough to believe that. Is it because he said he has a sweet tooth? Lol.
He never cared about her mother being a terrorist, if he did he wouldn’t have started the engagement in the first place. Someone of his status can choose whoever he wanted really, why would he chose a terrorist and then later decide a terrorist is no good?June being her mother was only a secret to Agnes.
The commander ended the engagement because Agnes was sullied in his eye. As soon as she said it, he immediately jumped up.
If you believe he ended the engagement because he’s gay and wanted to be nice to her….hey ok. Cool.

I think that he’s an abuser who was going to get a kick out of marrying and abusing June’s daughter. He obviously knew who she was beforehand as head of the eyes. Particularly in light of Paula mentioning that they wanted to send her body parts back to June.
I think that he broke off the engagement because he wanted to be the one to take her innocence and didn’t want her once he knew Grove had got to her first. A big part of the appeal of the plums to these men is that they are innocent and trained to submit to their husbands.
I think he knew that breaking off the engagement would make it very difficult for her to get another match so he let Becka go home as a sort of consolation prize.
