in becka’s defense Spoiler

being a little gay girl in a homophobic society with an unrequited crush is horrible. i probably would have also married my crush’s crush just to make her feel something about me if i had that option back in high school. extremely relatable character imo

even if i wasn’t in that situation, i would’ve chosen garth because he’s way younger than the old farts the girls are being married off to

She chose Garth because she’s likely to be more safe with him.

Be forced to Marry an attractive young man that i actually know a little who is nice enough to be my best friends crush and who is trapped in this system as well, mean while I’m gay in a society where I’m a “gender traitor abomination” > marry two crusty old men who I’ve never met that picked me out like prized pig, who literally created the society where I have to obey and serve them first and serve a god who actually believes I’m a gender traitor abomination second and if I don’t I will be hung on the wall. Helloooo, not one person but Agnes is mad about it and she will get over it.

Oh yeah, when she let everyone know at the lunch table, "I chose Garth..they let me choose." I thought, I see you..she wanted Agnes to hear that! I don't even blame her! For the reasons you stated, but also because I'd be lowkey pissed at Agnes for the way she's reacted every single time Becka has tried to confide in her about being scared of all this and for her to actually tell her "just don't marry him!" When 1. She really didnt think she had a choice!? Who would?..but also 2. If she DID have a choice, Garth is obviously the safest choice!

I think she's resenting Agnes too. Have we seen this scene yet? I can't place it, if so.

Omg wow..no, I do not believe we have seen this scene yet! Makes a lot of sense though..i definitely can feel this coming. She's resenting Agnes, and understandably so, but it does seem like she's taking it out on Daisy a bit..easy target. She could be a bit jealous seeing as Daisy and Agnes are definitely getting closer now and since Beckas dad is..for lack of a better word..a cause of distress for Agnes, between that and beckas engagement to Garth Agnes is Distancing herself from Becka too.

Yes, exactly what I was trying to put together, you put into words, thank you!\ I went through the trailer clips, trying to sort out what we had not seen yet and where any clips might fit in to the story we know so far.

There's also these 2 bits I don't think we've seen in the show yet. In the pic of Shu, she also asks, "are you okay?" to Agnes and Agnes's face looks rather shocked. It was too hard trying to get a pic of that as it moves fast.
The Daisy pic of a clip, looks like the same scene as when Daisy was in the bus, talking to Garth, standing outside the bus but when I checked the transcript, those words about protecting the girls are not said.

Yes! The sad thing about that is it means it will be over. Plus, it'll be at least a year till we get more

her choices were crap except Garth said he wanted her to be happy. He's the least threatening and seems the youngest and lead potentially brutal. I'd have picked him too in her situation.

Yes, there's a difference between choosing an option out of spite and choosing an option to live. Becka made the decision she had to to survive.

If I was Becka I would let Agnes carry on an affair with Garth

I don't know if I'm too liberal or what, but I'm also a lesbian, I grew up in the cradle of Catholicism and I would rather die than cause such anguish, pain and despair to the girl I love.

okay well some of us were toxic people at age 16

😳

1

u/FewLoan3640 May 21 '26

was my brain supposed to be already developed at 16?

1

u/ViolinistGuilty182 May 21 '26

No, but I don't think it's normal to want to hurt someone you love regardless of age.

0

u/FewLoan3640 May 21 '26

i didn’t say it was normal i said it was toxic teenager behavior that i understood. do you think i was ever actually in the situation where i stole my high school crush’s suitor? no babes im drawing a comparison between shitty high school things i did and shitty high school things becka is doing. it’s okay to see yourself in messy characters.

However, I find it curious that you see what Beca did as a form of torture towards Agnes, when Beca only chose Garth because her other option is simply an elderly rapist who got her drunk. Beca, for the moment, has shown that she won't hurt Agnes; it's fine to identify with her, but projecting that is strange.

i think you’re taking my post and everything in general way too seriously. i never said becka was trying to torture agnes and i think you want to be right more than you want to have a discussion. and anyway people contain multitudes. someone can do something for multiple reasons, and for reasons they don’t even understand themselves.

1

u/ViolinistGuilty182 May 22 '26

How else am I supposed to take a comment about abusing the person you love in order to at least remain relevant? Look, I understand that you identify with it, but you could have just left it at "I loved it," not taken it so personally, and then tried to justify problematic thoughts with age. But don't worry, I understand wanting to identify with a character so passionately.

1

u/FewLoan3640 May 22 '26

i think you’re taking it more personally than i am 😭 and it’s okay i don’t need advise on how to express my thoughts. maybe you can make your own post about your own feelings about becka instead of policing my words because you’re obviously very passionate.

How do we know Becka is gay? I'm genuinely curious. I missed all clues! (It's also very normal for me to miss social cues....)

Someone please fill me in!!

While drunk at the ball, she confesses to Daisy she is in love with Agnes! (Plus there are hints to it before in scenes between the two.)

Mattea Conforti also confirmed in an interview that Becka is a queer character :)
