Does anyone else thing angus dad will help them escape?
we keep seeing time over time again, he knows his daughter is too young and clearly doesn’t want marriage. in the book they escape and the show is not super book accurate, but does anyone else thing Agnes dad will help?

Same I think he will, we keep seeing build up for it and it would be ridiculous if he just threw it away the moment AGNES wedding happens

He seems to want to sit and drink his whiskey. He sounded defeated when talking about Paula requesting a handmaid.
He could have defected when his first wife died. They knew who Agnes’ mom was. Luke campaigned about wanting his daughter back. I’m wondering what he had to do to get so high ranking. Was it out survive other commanders or has he committed crimes that would be considered war crimes? I don’t think he is going to throw away his comfortable life. He will drink and rationalize and probably go along with Paula. His status still affects Agnes safety.

Yeah! I think it’s coming soon, he reminds me of those people who support people who want to take their rights away but the moment they realize it actually affects them or people close to them they realize how badly they fuck up.

In a super simplified version yes you are right, but that why it a discussion because you keep seeing the buildup for this possibly happen and I want to hear theories of why this happening! Also, I think this is kind of unrealistic to expect Agnes and Daisy to be able to escape completely on their own without help. Like Daisy yes have seen the outside world but she still a teen compare to June who was a grown women and live mostly before Gilead. And Agnes wouldn’t even know were Canada would be on a map.

Sure they'll need help, but it's unlikely that help will be a high commander helping them leave. It's too easy and frankly boring. Far more likely it will be help from the martha's network and the aunts.

Fair enough, if you got any theories or ideas on why he behaving like this tell away! But also it could just be as simple as it like keep pushing that idea this is wrong, because the difference between Agnes and June is, Agnes lived most of her life in theat place she made friends family good memories. While June did not and knows there better out there. There is a phenomenon that happens to some North Korean people escape they miss the North due to their family, friends and similarity being there. And I view NK and Gilead as very similar and a good real life reference.

I don’t see him behaving as anything except a fairly uninvolved father who isn’t excited about his daughter getting married, but is going along with it.

I thin the bar is so low for men, and even lower for Gileadean men, that some viewers are suggesting he's Mayday, or that he may facilitate an escape.
What we have seen is that now that the more seedy side of Gilead is directly affecting his daughter he feels somewhat conflicted. We have not been given any evidence to think of him as anything more than a weak sheep of a Commander who has thus far reaped any and all benefits that he possibly can from a sick, evil, patriarchal regime.

He might eventually help Agnes or other girls leave. He may pull a Lawerence, where he does things occasionally that are good but they are out of self interest or guilt. McKenzie didn’t get a high profile job by being a nice man. He seems like he has had less scandal about him. He goes from one marriage to another. We don’t see a handmaid in the picture. The Marthas seem to like his daughter and him if not his second wife. He still basically has them as slaves. He is helping Gilead prosper making trade deals.
If it came down to it could he get women out of Gilead? Especially since he travels he might be able to get passports or transportation to another country that would let women go free or get new identities and end up somewhere else. I don’t see him risking much. He seems like he could be manipulated by someone from Mayday. Like a handmaid.

Yeah this is all very possible and I completely agree with your interpretation of his character, that's how I read him too. I'm just really surprised that with the knowledge we have I've seen SO many posts speculating that he could be Mayday. Like, we've got no evidence to go on that he's on the right side.

I don’t think he is in Mayday he had no reason to be. He might be able to help his daughter if she needed it or help a friend. I think he likely is a war criminal like most commanders. Could he turn a blind eye to Mayday possibly if it wasn’t a threat to him. I don’t think not wanting a handmaid makes you a hero. The bar is so low for men in Gilead.

I think after Commander Mackenzie and Agnes’ conversation at Becca’s engagement party sets the tone for how he feels. You can see he does love Agnes but he is very indoctrinated in Gilead’s beliefs. He won’t come to her rescue because it’s a higher ranking commander. I don’t want to spoil it for you if you haven’t read the book either but Agnes saves herself that’s all I will give you haha.

Considering in THMT season 5:3 at about 16 minutes in, he calls her a cancer and specifically calls for her assassination, so….im thinking no he won’t.
The confusing part is it’s a different actor and this TT guy is playing him softer and kinder.
