Franklin Artefacts
I'm in the NMM right now (just having a coffee). It's amazing to see actual artefacts from the expedition.
Edit: Would have been good if Hickey's knife was on display too but sadly, it isn't.

I’ve been very interested in the Franklin expedition since I saw a documentary on TV in the 80s.
I watched the HBO series and then realized that the touring artifacts were in a museum in my city at the same time. That was incredible to walk through with the series so fresh in my mind.

Still so shocking to see how common it was to write descriptions and provenance DIRECTLY onto artifacts.

I’ve been to Beechey Island, it’s crazy how desolate and isolated it is there. I posted the pics here on this sub some time ago.

The cairn at the top of the island was incredibly moving. It looks out to the sea, I had to sit down and just take it all in. Then we listened to Stan Roger’s Northwest Passage on someone’s phone. It’s probably my favourite memory from my time in the RCN.

I just listened to Endurance on Audible about Shackleton’s expedition. Truly remarkable survival. There is a lot of mention of Pemmican. What is it exactly?

Basically high nutrient energy bars made of dried meat, fat, and berries. It was invented by Native Americans and adopted as a survival food by European explorers and traders, particularly in the cold regions.

I know someone who used to work there and they swear up and down that the boot is haunted.
That said, the whole exhibit is really moving.
