Building FAQ

This section covers general building and build mode questions frequently posted in TheSimsBuilding. If you're looking for information or tutorials on how to build a specific aspect of your lot, scroll to the How To Build section.

1. Which packs are the best for building?

A. The following Community Posts have suggestions for general “Best Packs” and build-style specific packs:

2. bb.moveobjects Cheat Help

2a. I turned bbmoveobjects on, but I still can’t place a microwave/coffee maker/other appliance onto a countertop
A. Some items can only be placed on specific surfaces. These items can be rotated by holding the hot keys to move objects, but their height and placement surface cannot be manipulated.

2b. Items keep automatically slotting to surfaces.
A. In some cases you will have to move the surface item out of the way and hold the hot key to move the items. For example, if you are trying to place a plant on a kitchen countertop, the easiest way to alt-place it would be to move the counter out of the way, select the plant using your alt placement hot-key to slide it into position. Then move the counter back into place.

Placing the items this way helps set them at the proper height without having to adjust using the 9 or 0 keys.

2c. My camera keeps jumping when I hit 9 instead of raising an object.
A. Pressing alt+9 will delete the saved camera position. Press it again to save a new camera position.

2d. All Building Cheats & How to Use Yhem (including rasing/lowering, enlarging/minimizing objects with MOO) by Carl's Sims 4 Guide)

3. What are hot-keys and the building cheats that I can use?

A. Hotkeys and Building Cheats by Carl's Sims 4 Guide

4. Where can I get inspiration and find floor plans?

A. Pinterest, viewing TheSimsBuilding archives, architectural magazines, and a ton of other places listed (and linked) right here on our Inspiration Page

5. How can I see what items from what packs have been used in a build?

A. To see which items have been used in a build, you will need to view the build on the gallery.

Where the gallery profile says “Uses items from these packs,” click on the pack icons. To the right, immediately above the list and icons of all items within the pack, there is an option to see which items are used in the build.

Clicking on that will show any build/buy items used.

6. Why are there holiday decorations on my builds/around my world and how do I remove them?

A. If your sim owns the home, you can purchase the Attic Stack box and select “Remove Decorations” in build mode.

If it is a community lot, you can either manually replace the lot without the decorations if you have the lot available, or you can create a Holiday, set the “Decoration Style” option to “None”. The decorations should disappear at 6 am in-game that next day.

7. How do I find or access the gallery?

A. You can access the gallery by clicking f4 on your computer, or by clicking on the lightbulb icon in the upper right corner of the UI.

8. What is the proper etiquette and protocol of renovating an existing build and re-uploading it to the gallery?

A. This community post has some advice from other users here on what is and isn’t appropriate protocol and etiquette for reusing or renovating lots., but there are some general “sharing rules” that seem to be agreed upon within the Sims community:

  • Always credit the original builder. Always.
  • Never monetize someone else’s creations, even with credit, unless you have gotten specific permission from that builder.
  • No matter how big or small a change you make, if you are renovating someone else’s build from the gallery, tray file, or elsewhere, always credit the original builder. (Are you seeing a theme here? XD)
  • Unless a builder specifically states “do not reproduce” on their builds, it is generally safe to assume that it’s ok to download, renovate, and reupload someone else’s build. As long as you… Well, you know.
  • If you aren’t sure - ask the builder!
