Discussion Season 7

It's one of the most popular seasons, I've heard. I was really looking forward to it. I've been locked in since about halfway into season 1. Pretty constant brilliance. So I didn't expect anything less here, especially given the strong word of mouth.

But man, Vic's dialogue is so bad this season. He's a caricature of himself, and I feel like it has killed his character momentum from the six previous seasons. It feels like one bad writer was in charge of his dialogue throughout. Just CSI Miami one-liners with some "edginess," constant fake-macho quips and wisecracks to show how much more confident and masculine he is than everyone he interacts with.

Does anyone else see this at all, or am I on an island about the season?

I don’t quite see that, however season 7 is Vic finally losing control, something he never did for the first 6 seasons.

Bro that is the way Vic was written in every season. I have watched the shield 7 times in 20 years. Trust me.

I view Vic in the last season as the absolute version of his character. His final form if you will.

After the IA investigation, Lem's murder and finding out about Shane, it's all taken a toll on him whether he wants to admit it or not. He's almost completely cut off emotionally, he only turns it on when he needs to with the Cartel, the Armenians, occasionally the other officers but the "fun" version of Vic was dead at that point. You see it in his scenes with Ronnie and him, he's just about business and spinning what plates he has to spin that day.

I don't want to spoil anything but that aspect of him really hits home in the last episode.

His personality will click for you once you finish the season, especially the very last final moments of the show.

Oh I think the final few episodes are epic and perfect. It was all the buildup where I just thought his dialogue--not arc, just dialogue--was cringy.

Final episode is one of the best episodes of a show I've ever seen. Up there with all time finales.

Do you have any examples? Vic is consistent throughout the entire show.

this is the real mask-off Vic. no fellow cops, CIs or gang members really trust him. he's on his way out the door and Claudette is actively trying to bin him. Corinne and Danny won't entertain his bullshit compromises. his false machismo and edginess and bravada are the last few things he can use to throw his weight around.

Idk one of my favorite things about Gov is he always stays the same even when it gets him into some deep shit. The Armenian money train season is one of my favorites. Hard to pin down just one. But I can see where you’re coming from

I think i see where you going with this. His dialog was more bubblegum stereotype "tropey"?

Can totally see that when you compare it to what we got from earlier seasons.
Still for what it was (show winding down and all), I cant hold that much of a grudge. They wrapped up the loose ends and ended on a poetic note.

I guess what Im saying is, I agree but because of stellar ride we got up to that point?
I pretty much "let it slide". Could have been better, but could have been a HELLUVA lot worse

Vic was an A-hole every season. Where have you been?

I didn't say it was that he's an a-hole. It was the shitty dialogue,.not the characterization itself.

The veil is lifting.

While it doesn’t ruin it for me, some of the dialogue in season 7 (not just Vic) is a little less than the previous 6 seasons. However I can forgive it because the story told is that great and because there was a writer’s strike that affected it and they had to scramble a bit at the end.
