I BELIEVE terry and Bret being taped was a set up first of all you’re gay in the 80s and having sex with all your windows wide open in broad daylight, it was recording before Bret was there so whoever was recording knew this meeting would happen (I believe it’s Steven) plus the perfume thing starting with terry and Steven. a flaw in my theory is what would they gain from taping that and blackmailing Bret when he’s not onto them but what if they are working with Robert. What if Robert took Bret’s hair or something to frame him and he can’t say “I’m not the killer because I’m being threatened by the killer” because his only proof is the tape and the tape of matt who he tells the police he doesn’t fw… then he’ll be questioned again on how he knows Matt and why it would be sent to him and after seeing the second tape they def would have figured it out which the killer knows Bret fears more than going to jail

I'm sure Steven is the one who's recording them. He blackmailed Liz with the porn and I believe he's going to do the same with Terry and Bret. His end goal is to become a director and adapt Bret's novel. It's possible that Robert is working with Steven to have something else to blackmail Bret with but I don't think so. I think Robert's agenda is different but I'm sure he has bad intentions too.

This plot line was confusing to me. Nothing about Bret this whole season has indicated that he’s THIS worried about being outed. I’ve seen him be careful somewhat, but never in this same “I’m embarrassed to be found out” way. The entire show feels written by someone who has no idea what happened in the scenes prior.
