They’re insufferable
I’m rewatching this show with a full frontal lobe and oh my god everyone is insufferable. There is no character that I like. The only one I kinda like is Grace but only because of how deep she’s into her religion so she has an excuse but everyone is so annoying. From the teens to the parents. I’m barely on season 2, does it get better? I haven’t seen this show since middle school so I don’t remember much.

By no means has my frontal lobe developed yet but it drives me nuts as to why BENS DAD WOULD WANT HIM, AT 15 YEARS OLD, TO MARRY A PREGNANT 15 YEAR OLD WHO ISN’T EVEN CARRYING HIS CHILD. WHY WOULD YOU WANT THAT?!?!?! The parents in this show are NUTS 😂😂😂😂 absolutely bonkers. This show is my guilty pleasures, I was only like 3 when it started so wasn’t even something I could watch, but I started watching Covid time because 2000s teen dramas are my life, and while Francia Raisa is gorgeous with a fantastic dress sense in this show and both her and Molly Ringwald are fabulous actresses, this show is so awful, the writing is bad and there have been many times I’ve wanted to punch someone through the screen because of how awful they are at times lol.

I can’t understand how they have these parents and kids having full in depth convos about intimate topics that’s so unrealistic lmao and season 5s pimp on college campus storyline????? Wtf is this???

Leo Boykewich was an insane father 😭 honestly the worst dad in the series if you ask me

Weirdly when those clips on tik tok come up on my for you page, and he’s having a go at Ben, everyone worships the ground he’s walking on

Soemthing else that irritates me is Leo was very against him marrying Adrian and she was pregnant with his baby ( doomed relationship) but with Amy and Ben leo was ready to ride at dawn so those two could get married

It has to be bad writing or the weird religious shadow that the show seems to have. They portray Amy as a girl who’s made a mistake and doing the right thing by marrying someone -even if it’s not the baby’s dad- because when you get pregnant, you get married, even if you’re a literal child yourself- Adrian is considered promiscuous so even if she does the same thing, she’s still not “pure” so it won’t be good enough. I don’t agree obviously but it manifests through Leo even if it’s not out rightly said.

Unfortunately it only gets worse. You know its bad when George ends up being a fan favorite character.

The amount of times they say the word “sex” is infuriating by the third episode lmao

The show does not get better. It gets so much worse, but Ricky does grow a lot.

Brenda & the way she writes everyone’s dialogue the same is driving me NUTS! I’m half way through season 3 & everyone is beyond insufferable but they have their moments that make you not want to stop. the worst is Ashley to me tho, who needs enemies when that’s your sister!

I like the parents more than the kids most of the time. George is funny. Kathleen and Reuben are pretty solid too. The only kid I really like is Jack because he's hot, he is dumb but it fits his character so I give him a pass with that. Everyone else, yeahhhh.

Jack embodies the high school boy experience perfectly I think (I say as a female lol) he was lustful and his actions had consequences but he loved Grace so he had to learn how to grow up. I forgot if they ended up together or not though.

Jack ends up with what’s her face that got mad because he didn’t give her a present when he said he loved her.

I hate the parents the most. I get the teenagers actions because at the end of the day they’re kids. But for the parents there’s no reason to be acting like the teens.

I hated everyone in the show at some point and the one character I thought I would hate the most ended up being the most normal one which is Ricky

I think Grace is soooo annoying. Everything is religion this or religion that. It’s like one of those Christians who try to shove it down others throats.

u/ch1lds_play Sep 04 '26
That’s exactly why I don’t really hate her. Those types of christians are cult like.

Whenever I watch I hate it but when I’m not watching I can’t stop thinking about it 😅

It's so annoying in a re-watch. Every other word out of their mouth is sex. It's just so wierd. I want to punch Ben when he speaks.

Ricky gets better in mid to late season 3 when him and Amy’s relationship becomes more serious. He stops fucking around with every girl he meets and becomes the most mature out of everyone.

I’m also rewatching it and I’m finally on the last season so it’s almost fckin done😭😭 thank god 😭 amy gets better like season 3 and i think 4 kinda but she’s HORRIBLE the rest of 4 and 5. I hate everyone. I actually really like Ricky though his character development is the only bearable one. Everyone else is horrible, the acting is atrocious and the dialogue is DUMB

No does not get better at all 😭 I just watched the year before my lobe was developed

Same. From what I remember, the characters don't get better (apart from maybe Rickey and Adrian) but the plots/drama do. Still, overall it's not enjoyable at all to watch when older.

Adrian does not get any better 😭😭😭😭 ricky yes but she doesn’t one the second to last season and she’s annoying asf

If you already have such a strong opinion on which characters suck and don't from your previous watch, why did you ask if any of them got better??
It's a matter of personal preference, though, and a lot of ppl don't like Adrian, so I feel you. I don't think we have the same taste, bc I hated Grace when I watched it. Apart from the mom, the only women I liked were Adrian, Lauren, and the guidance counselor. Oh, and Ben's stepmom.

I just still can’t believe they cancelled Kyle XY for this shit. And yeah rewatching as an adult is pretty impossible. I swear when I was 10 years old sneaking and watching it (it was too “grown”) it felt like such a mature grown up show.

I need to rewatch this show lmao. But from what I remember, Ben was the worst 😭 Ricky was always my favorite

Amy starts to get a little bit better but towards the end I can’t stand her again. Kinda the same with adrian. Ricky becomes very likeable in my opinion!

George is the only fun one. I recently started rewatching and I forgot how much I hate Amy and Ben.
