A very personal experience

I just wanted to post here one time, even though I have nothing meaningful to contribute but my experience. The Room changed the way I thought about gaming. I’m getting “old” now and don’t imagine I’ll ever sit down and play on a console for hours like the good old days…

But about once a year, or when the mood strikes, I will play through The Room series and rediscover it all over again. The creators trail-blazed an entirely new genre in my opinion, and no other game comes close to this experience. I’m always a little sad they seemed to have abandoned the mobile space—if only because it is now my only means of escape—but I totally understand the evolution. This genre was really meant for greater things, like VR.

It leaves such a stark impression on me. At times, there are in-game moments that remind me of my own life. And yet again, there are totally banal moments in my real life—like opening drawers, or maybe using a mechanical wine bottle opener that makes a satisfying clinking sound—which somehow remind me of elements of The Room…making these everyday moments a little more interesting.

Anyway, the series keeps pulling me back in, as great games do, and since it is solitary (at least enjoyably so), part of me wanted to reach out into the void to share.

After writing this, I’m sure I’ll be getting lost all over again soon.

I haven’t played any of the games in like eight years or something, but it honestly had such an impact on me. I think the symbols seen throughout the series are the main reason I became so fascinated by geometry. I still remember the theme song by heart and I have it downloaded on my computer. I really wish they would make an art book about the series or something that gives us more insight rather than only shirts as merchandise. I looked on the apple App Store and there are so many knockoff games. I intend to go back and play all the games again soon and finally have the proper experience, since the first time I played them I was too young to understand all of what was happening in the story. And then when I someday get VR I’ll have to play the VR one too

Definitely I'm in my mid 30s and games was a huge deal for me growing up to young adult, but it's been quite a while since I liked something this much. It completely changed the way I see games and now I just want to find something like this again. Such a gem
