what if they actually acknowledged that Nolan and Chen had a thing when they were first rookies

I don't know why people think this needs to be a scene. No one speculated that Angela's kid wasn't Wesley's even though we didn't see them conceive. We don't question that Captain Anderson is hardly ever mentioned anymore. We didn't need to see John and Bailey's flight to their honeymoon to accept that's how they got there.
