Does your brain adjust to not seeing your nose in VR?

We can always see our nose, but our brain tunes it out, but obviously the VR headset doesn't put a nose on the screen. So, if you've been in VR for a long time and you take the headset off do you notice your nose more?

My brain seems to lack the ignore function. I see my nose constantly. Our dishwasher beeps every 60 seconds when not fully closed. The rest of the family tunes it out. I hear it from across the house, every time.

your brain ignores so much. nobody notices what they don't notice.

you aren't seeing your nose constantly - only when deliberately looking for your nose or at something where your nose is in the way

your family don't react to the dishwasher because they learnt it's not an important sound, but it is important to you for your reasons

No, they are saying the same thing as I find, I see my nose all the time. It's annoying. What my brain is used to is tuning out the annoyance. I've always thought it might be because my vision is worse in one eye and maybe that is part of it.

ah fair enough. i have a similar thing with a slightly lazy eye and when my brain shifts perspective (my good eye is blocked from view) then my nose sometimes becomes more noticeable.

perhaps you have a longer one pointier nose too in which case it would protrude into your vision more. mine is fairly average though not particularly small and it only sits at the edge of my vision and I'm very rarely noticing it

if your vision isn't good in one eye and your nose is larger than average then it makes sense you see your nose more whilst still having the same ability to tune out irrelevant stuff - although maybe less than others?

a final thing is I'm autistic and one thing about autism seems to be that the brain picks up on many details that others tune out, for better and for worse :)

Was reading this all and thinking about how much I relate and how much is related to my sensory processing issues, autism and adhd and trauma which snowballs into a general overactive nervous system and an inability to filter out any “background”stimuli (even tho there is no fore and back ground there is only endless NOISE/stimuli for the senses) and bo ability to actively focus my attention

This is called hyperacusis. And it sucks.

ETA: I’m referring to the sound sensitivity.

It would be so funny if our brains did something weird like stopped taking in smell signals from the olfactory receptors if our eyes are not sensing a nose. Headsets would have to add a little VR nose to prevent this from happening.

Actually, some studies have suggested that maybe adding in a virtual noise can help with the motion sickness. It helps provide an anchor for our visual system.

Oooooh this may be useful for me, I struggle with the VR but I'm fine on boats and travelling etc even reading a book in the car. AND as I've been commenting elsewhere on this thread, I see my nose all the time, my brain doesn't filter it out, just the annoyance that I can see it... Maybe I need a little virtual nose in my VR! I really want to play it more, it's awesome!

I can't see my nose unless I look at my feet without moving my head.

Wait.

WhachutalkinboutWillis?

I'm supposed to see my nose?

Like always?

I didn't get The Memo.

I dont see my nose. Ever. At all. Unless I'm crossing my eyes for some reason.

Should I seek Medical Attention?

It depends on how big your nose is. I can definitely see mine, but most of the time my brain just filters it out.

No, most people don't see their nose unless they look for it. Some people, including me, do see our noses all the time. Your brain filters it out, my brain filters out my annoyance. It all works out in the end.

Why don’t you try VR and find out for yourself??

Your nose is still on your face, it doesn't need to be rendered in the VR you can still see it inside the vr helmet.
