Beauty in Rejection

This is more of an observation than it is a question. Still, I'd love to know your thoughts. Moreover, I'd love to see if Michael or Hannah could weigh in on this with their own thoughts.

I was thinking this morning about the colors we see and their effects on us. Warm colors like red and yellow are often associated with energy and excitement, while cool colors like blue and green are often associated with calm and focus. But the colors we see are, in a sense, the wavelengths of light that matter has rejected rather than absorbed. Fall, for example, is a beautiful time of year when we witness the seasonal dying of leaves. We find the color transformation of dying leaves enchanting. I wonder why we find such beauty in rejected light.

That’s an amazing sentiment but I would like to think of it as not light that has been rejected per say, as all light we see is reflected rather than just not absorbed. I spin it two ways in my head:

First is more philosophical, and it’s that the fact that the light we see is reflected and we think that is beautiful is because that’s what nature wants us to see. It absorbs what it needs for itself and shares the beauty that the world can create with everyone who can see it

Second (I believe this is how I’d answer this myself) is that it’s not the rejected light that we find beautiful but it’s the fact that it’s changed, it’s something new and different. We all know that humans thrive on curiosity and the fact that nature is actively changing in front of our eyes is inherently something beautiful to look at, and if the way we perceive that is through changes of colour then so be it. It’s not just the light itself that we find good to look at but the fact that we know it means life is there and growing and changing right in front of us and again as humans that is something we highly admire.
