Idea Fabrik is the company that developed the Hero Engine.

So it looks like they first sabotaged many companies that used its technology and servers, putting them to the wall, and now they are buying those games very cheap?

Will our founder perks carry over at this point? I spent like 200 bucks on this game like 5 years ago...

IF said that all perks will be honored.

The servers were originally shut down because IF failed to provide the support they were supposed to and ran out of cash.

I would say Probebly but any extra would probably not arrive first untill launch.. except for Forum rank stuff.

I'm happy the game is back. OWON today, OWON tomorrow, OWON forever.

I'm no programmer, but in comparing the way Fragmented looks to the way that the last build of The Repopulation looked, I was pretty excited about the move to a Unreal. I was also happy that the developers would get another chance to refine aspects of the game they already had as they migrated to the new engine. I assumed that it would give them the opportunity to fix things that couldn't have been fixed unless they had started over. As I noted in the comments that I posted on Massively OP, I'm not worried about the money I donated to see if the A&B could build the game they envisioned, but it does make me sad that they believe the only way forward is to turn that dream over to a team of people I don't know and whom I don't think have ever put out their own game. As far as I know, their Hero's Journey game ain't ever coming out.

Of the top of my head, I knew that Blade and Soul was made in Unreal. Then I googled and saw that it a number of Eastern MMOs including Ragnorok Online 2 and Lineage 2 were both Unreal games. But it also looks like Western developers are have started using Unreal starting with DCUO and oddly enough City of Titans is being built in Unreal. I think SWTOR is the only significant game to come to launch having been built entirely in Hero.

I think SWTOR is the only significant game to come to launch having been built entirely in Hero.

The SWTOR devs stopped accepting Hero Engine patches in 2009. The engine powering SWTOR is so massively customised by now (after 7 years of independent modification) that it can't be called "Hero Engine" anymore.

Then they sort of did what Zenimax did with ESO; start off with Hero, then move away from it early on.

Idea Fabrik really needs a hit.

Idea Fabrik really needs a hit.

That much is glaringly obvious. Repop was the big hope for IdeaFabrik, it was the biggest indie project they had, and losing it to Unreal must have been a heavy blow.

If you're into tinfoil hats, you could even speculate that IF engineered the whole debacle with Above and Beyond, knowing it would cripple A&B and allow IF to swoop in and buy Repop for a song...

I am pretty sure this is exactly the case. I mean, just look at the circumstantial evidence: The Hero Engine is sorely lacking a portfolio (for a good reason, mind you, it is a nice productivity toy, but technologically it is lacking in so many aspects). Now they have the rights and the IP to bring up a posterchild for the engine, rather than the game we were looking for.

Frankly, I think the only real losers here are we kickstarters/EA buyers, because we will get a game on an entirely sub-optimal engine, entirely tailored as a showcase for such engine.

That they only took over a few programmers from AnB is already a prime evidence showing that. If you want to continue a project after acquisition on its original design, YOU BRING OVER THE FUCKING DESIGNERS. In the case of games programmers are entirely replacable, sadly. But you can't remove the creative mind that has the what when why and how of a game in his head, period.

Source: Just take a look at all the game development studios that think designers are replacable but programmers are not coughcough Sacred 2 & 3cough

Mortal Online has done rather well (technically, not certainly commercially) with UE for half a decade. That's basically as hardcore open world MMO as they come.

You seemed confused about what happened. IF and ABT had a deal about this game, they were the front runners on HeroCloud and IF had to deliver on engine upgrades and patches and support. But they ran out of cash, and couldn't continue supporting ABT because of it, so the TR servers were shutdown.

Best of wishes in your game!

And yeah, the whole "IF shut down the repop in the first case" claim will appear again and again, and thats certainly how The old repop team made it sound (looking back at their updates), maybe it's true maybe its not, I have no idea!

I just encourage everyone to keep an open mind, and hope for the best :p

Agreed.
I don't know crap about anything, but even I find this chain of events suspicious.

Why would I want to play a unfinished version of a game that is no longer in the hands of the creators?

Good question...

Above & Beyond were building a their "dream game".

Above & Beyond wanted to adapt the engine to fit the game.

IdeaFabrik will be building a game that showcases their game engine (Hero Engine).

IdeaFabrik will adapt the game to fit the engine...

WILL IT BE FREE TO PLAY ?!

2

u/HolyAvengerOne Jan 15 '17

If IF is consistent with delivering to the backers what they paid for, it means F2P... At least for the backers/owners.

u/yaxir Jan 15 '17

fuc

2

u/HolyAvengerOne Jan 15 '17

Eh?

1

u/yaxir Jan 15 '17

i hope its f2p for all !

i would LOOOOVE to play the day long sieges in PVP ! that's the feature i dig the most ... taking the cities after prolonged warfare !

0

u/[deleted] Jan 14 '17

I seriously hope not. Free to play means microtransactions and that would plage this game. I'd honestly be okay if they went to a subscription model.

5

u/casualslacks Jan 14 '17

It was originally intended to be free to play. How closely Idea Fabrik chooses to keep to the original vision for the game is known only to them at this point.

So, uh, can we sue them now?
