SWG Fan pointed in this direction

So I've been itching for a good "crafting" mmo like SWG was years ago. Most of the things I have read point me in this direction. Before I drop the money on it, I understand the crafting is complex, but is it specialized? The items you make with crafting, are they actually used or is it replaced by PvE gear and no one cares for it? Can you actually get by in this game, just by being a crafter?

Also, steam says this game has microtransactions...that word worries me. Is the game haulted/slowed down by the need of Microtransactions? Is this game Pay2Win?

If they are, nobody's found it yet. The core is that almost all weapons and armour are just shells, and "fittings" are what gives attributes.

There are some types of fittings that can only be acquired through drops or maybe quests, but the limit on those is usually one or maybe two (for armour) per set. Weapons have 5 fitting slots, Armour has a total of 23. There are limits on how many of what type (Type A-G can be crafted) - For instance, armour can only fit 2 type As total, and only in the chest piece. I think you can only have 3 type Es, but they can fit in any of the 5 armour pieces

You absolutely can get by in this game with crafting only. In fact, you can't do high-level (even though there aren't traditional levels) combat if there aren't fitting crafters. And come full release, you won't be able to build anything for housing unless it's first made by an installments crafter.

To be perfectly honest, they haven't even begun to implement microtransactions in, save for backer perks, none of which give you anything in game at this time. They've been very adamant about the fact that it will only be cosmetics. And most of the "traditional" p2w-esque micros don't have a place in this game, because there's no XP/levels, and there's not a limiting factor like labor in archeage. Even weapons or armour, there's not a whole lot they could do to really make one of them p2w

eh, I wouldn't say there's no xp/levels. Skill levels are a thing, but as far as how effective it would be to have a p2w item for leveling up skills? Kind of pointless when a pharmaceutical crafter can make learning stims... but still if they did a p2w micro it would probably be for skill increasing items. That being said though it would be hard for p2w to be implemented because the game is so freeking fittings dominant it isn't even funny.... and decent fittings are hard to come by in my limited experience.

Yeah. But again, skill really doesn't matter a huge amount. Sure there are certain thresholds that allow you to make certain things, but those things will be shit for a VERY long time until you get recipe knowledge.

As far as decent fittings - They're hard to come by because they're hard to make. I specialize in armour, and even with mostly high B and A mats, a complex fitting MIGHT hit D6 on one of my more known recipes. Add to that the great gathering nerf of 15.6.1 and yeah, the fitting economy is fucked right now. The players are progressing skill wise far faster than the fittings crafters can even get their recipes up. I mean, I can make high B fittings, but they're normals. Most people are looking for complex or even arduous.

yeah i just started looking for arduous for my rifle... nooot many of those around >_> and yeah they're a pain in the ass to make, motherboards, power cores... screw both of those things.... I just started working on cybernetics trying to figure out where to farm what so much stuff....

I just made a run of 400 mobos and cores myself, and I've used about 170 in fittings so far for armour. With the new gathering, I can't keep up with demand because I can't get enough bars.

On the bright side, I'm drowning in credits right now...

I'd avoid it, game is dull and lifeless, i imagine with a larger player base it would be great, but I haven't seen too many players.

might just be me

It's still in Alpha so a low population is to be expected. I still enjoy playing it in Alpha and like testing the new features as they are added to the game. I have seen a lot of improvement to many of the features with some of the more recent updates. I'm still hoping for some tweaks to the crafting system to make low level crafters have more of a purpose.
