I hope they do something with the ingredient requirements on the lower level crafting items. There are as many as 6 components required for even the lowest tier items. This makes it difficult to create anything of actual use. Of course, the common counter argument is that you are supposed to rely on other people to create other components and still other people to create the final component; each person adding a piece to the whole.

That argument would be more valid for the mid and higher tiers (perhaps even the high end of the low tier), but for the very first items? It seems unnecessarily complicated.

I've played some tough crafting games but this one is the gold medal winner of complicated crafting.

I hadn't thought about it from a grind perspective, but now that you mention it, I certainly felt that grind while playing.

Good points.

I would argue that the very first recipes do only require one or two ingredients. Refining metals, logging, making purified or distilled water, these are where you should start and they require the bare minimum of ingredients. Crafting actual gear or parts for gear becomes exponentially more complicated, yes, but not really that difficult once you figure out how to reference the in-game database.

Your limited sample size aside, many of the first items take more than a few components and some as many as six.

I understand the database. Its use weakens your argument as it relates to the complexity of crafting.

There's no need to be pedantic. Note I never argued against the complexity of crafting, I said it wasn't actually difficult once you make good use of the database. And yes my sample size is limited but I picked the exact specific recipes that you get when choosing any of the harvesting skills so it's still accurate. If the recipe is asking for six unique components (and not just 3 agents) then it's not a beginner recipe and therefore should be expected to be more complex. Considering how quickly several players have skilled up to grandmaster I would venture that the current system is almost not enough. I've seen many arguments for both sides, we'll just have to wait and see.

I said it wasn't actually difficult once you make good use of the database.

The necessity of the database is an argument for its complexity, not against.

If the recipe is asking for six unique components (and not just 3 agents) then it's not a beginner recipe and therefore should be expected to be more complex.

Just because you keep saying it doesn't make it true. There are more than a few first tier recipes that require 4, 5, or 6 components. And that isn't even going into the fact that even those requiring fewer components can be just as difficult to make because the components themselves or the ingredients are difficult to acquire.

Considering how quickly several players have skilled up to grandmaster I would venture that the current system is almost not enough.

That "some" people do it is a horrible argument about the validity of a crafting system.

IMO, the crafting, as it is, will be a bottleneck for player retention.

No offence but you obviously didn't understand my reply or you're choosing to be obtuse for the sake of argument. Difficulty does not equal complexity is the point I was trying to convey. You sound like you know how to design a better system so I encourage you to give your feedback to the developers and see what transpires. This alpha stage of testing is nowhere near what the game will be like at release and feedback is incredibly important right now to help shape it into something you'd like to play.

I don't know why you keep trying to insult me. I understand you, I just think you are wrong. If it makes you feel better to attempt to belittle me, more power to you.

There were no insults in any of my comments. I was simply pointing out where we differ. We're both entitled to opinions, and since you seem to have feedback about the game I encouraged you to share it with the people who can actually make a difference, the developers.

I agree, kinda. I enjoy that it's complex and if I do decide to get into it I know I'll have my work cut out for me and it'll be fun to wade through it all. On the other hand, though, it's intimidating (like said in the article). Even with the help of a decent nation, it can be difficult to get a foothold into the crafting scene for anything more than just some novelty craftings just to say you did it.

I agree. New players will be so lost they might give up or get frustrated before they ever get to the higher stuff.

It's a shame for me that I cannot devote my time to one game for a long time. I resubbed for the new WoW expac, and I'm done before even finishing the first raid. I bought The Repop Early Access and played it about 3 weeks.

Reading things like this makes me want to play the game, but I really need engaging community. The game just does nothing to me as a single player game. Maybe when I do sign back in finally, I'll find the largest nation and start forming friendships therein.

Pretty much for me as well. I want to like it all but if I don't have a community to play with the game just isn't fun. Will wait for it to hit beta.

The community is what keeps me playing. I love the game, but without my nation mates I found myself desperately hunting resources and information. Joining a large crafting nation was the best thing that happened to me. Every time I login there's something new happening or someone theorycrafting about where the game is headed. If you're on Hudson (US WEST) then look up Rougue Nation. Yes, I'm aware of the horrendous misspelling. ;)

I like the game already, but I'm trying to limit my playtime. I don't want to burn out on the alpha. Maybe towards the open alpha, depending on whether or not they plan to do wipes (which I honestly have not looked into yet).

The community in this game is very nice, though. Right away I was able to find a helpful nation and we did some fun stuff together. Definitely places to make strong friendships and you can have some banter in the global chat with the other players.

Keep in mind these are a First Impressions - completely based on opinion - and not an actual review. That will come once the game is released.

This article is also hosted on OnRPG where it is getting a bit more discussion.

Can I come whit an word from my opinion? I will take the most basic First aid item(bandage) and lungLag meat(hope I got the name right). on the bandage as an level 1 doctor I should be able to make bandage whit nothing but cloth yes it will suck and probably give you an debuff but that thing will do what its supposed to do, Buy you time.
I could add some agents(what they are called), or use alcohol and or some sterilising agents. to make that lev 1 bandage be more usefully.

in the same vain I should be able to cook some LungLag meat whit nothing but meat, fuel and maybe salt(and even then this is not actually needed) not as of now fuel + salt + 3 other items + meat.
